BBC Newsnight really interesting. They saying only about half the compliance in this wave than the first one. Experts calling for a harsher lockdown. I'm thinking we are seeing something very similar here and we aren't taking action fast enough.

George Lee should be taken off the news. I’m sure there are very many people up and down the country in fear with the numbers announced today.

Then he comes on and starts spouting out incorrect statements saying there is no backlog in the numbers today and that all the cases happened yesterday. Then he goes off driving more fear for people.

There are folks literally terrified watching the Late Late Show tonight.

Bit of fear before Xmas wouldn't have gone amiss tbh.

I'm half convinced that George Doomsday also does know that the figures do in fact contain backlog.....he actually said "At face value" before proceeding to talk about the 8300 cases...probably might not be doomsday enough if they highlighted that the 8300 contained around 3000 backlog......

I also read about only half compliance in this wave too, in terms of masks, which I just can't get my head around. I didn't watch Newsnight myself; were they talking solely about masks or other measures too? I haven't been out and about much myself recently but from my experience pretty much everyone has been wearing masks. I don't know if that's the case everywhere though.

Mask wearing is definitely better than the first wave but there is no doubt more people are on the move and they aren't all going for groceries.

The amount of young ones travelling for pipe is out of control too.

Have you an update on the Dublin doctor that died in his bedroom overnight a couple of nights ago while self isolating? I haven't seen anything about it on the news, I'd have thought it'd be a major story.

Proof? I heard on the news it wasn't.

Fake news, you have had the backlog numbers explained to you many times.
Any update on your doctor story, you were asked several times today but no response.

Swab day announcements have changed a little lately at the weekend since Christmas.

Does anyone know if we'll have swab announcements on Saturday and Sunday?

    Thanks in advance.

No . Still under 65s with high risk conditions , essential workers who are more exposed on a daily basis ...

Do you think opening up will happen when those groups are vaccinated? The situation will have greatly improved then. We will be in a far better position when those we are most trying to protect are vaccinated.

How has it changed? Sunday is the only day we don't get the info, we get 2 days on a Monday?

It’s usually just Sundays and Bank Holidays there are no swabs, so should get a figure tomorrow.

Yes, I do agree that there are definitely more people on the move. I was driving for work today and there were quite a few cars on the road compared to the last time we saw restrictions as harsh as we are seeing now.

I've added a chart for daily positivity to the dashboard now. Meant to do this a while back :)

    quoting my own post.

it's clear as day. you can see the positive swabs, and reported cases there by day and the difference between them. clearly a 3k backlog added to todays positive swabs of 5k.

Am I right in saying that means around 20% of tests are positive? Has that been the case for long?

Nice additions and thanks for dashboard. It's certainly been used a lot lately.
All that's missing is a total swabs and total cases figure, so we can see any potential backlog!

There is no way that the Republic could have approved and made the same vaccine deals that the UK did by itself, we can count ourselves lucky we are part of the EU that have been able to do this.

Yeah, sure, of course you are......;).. extremely lucky

"The EU is clearly starting to wake up to how worrying delaying this vaccine is. This morning Ursula von der Leyen announced she is now graciously allowing EU countries to individually procure 300 million more doses.
Something that Germany was doing behind their backs anyway. This EU Commission U-turn is a world away from the claims they had ordered “more than enough doses”.
Ditching the EU’s disastrous common scheme is perhaps the first big benefit of Britain’s Brexit mindset."

the rate of increase is slowing and even starting to level out. i'm not saying we're "good" by any means. just that the trends seem to be starting to go in the right direction.

of course there is the issue of less testing of close contacts, i'm not sure how that factors in exactly.

Would you say that reduces numbers by one half maybe , or even two thirds ?

Firstly it's a collective agreement, 300 million for all the EU based on population. Agreed by member states. Now if one country wanted to purchase an additional 20 mil, then the EU negotiates with the manufacturer for 320mil and said country gets an additional 20mil doses.
This means the country is not competing with member states, in fact, by upping the order, the price may decrease etc...

In relation to Germany, there was an EU agreement or rule for no bilaterial or side deals. Germany waited until the EU done their deal with Pfizer and then purchased more doses. It was no side deal, the Eu concluded their deal and then Germany and I believe Denmark purchased extra doses. Nothing wrong there at all.

no idea tbh, it's very difficult to estimate its effects, its more complex than it initially looks. i'm sure some of the more statistical heads on here would have an idea.

Cheers, sure its a 'fun' project really getting to play with live data. Fairly clear here where the boardsies F5ing got overtaken by others :p

I'm working on adding the backlog figure, I actually did almost add it there a while back but gave up because the code for this is all over the place. Soon though :)

Let's say you have 3 contacts per person and the close contact positivity rate is 15% (it's typically 10% to 15%), then this gives 450 missed cases for every 1000 cases (1000 times 3 times 15%). But at least 60% of those cases will be symptomatic and will get tested anyway. Plus you will have people who pretend to have symptoms so they can get a test. I reckon we are missing less than 20% of cases through not testing close contacts.

Very nice explanation. I'd say over the Christmas the close contacts were higher and also I'd say the positivity rate with close contacts would also have been higher (based on lots of family gatherings, letting your guard down, hugging and kissing, spending hours in houses etc...... basically not an acquaintance you're meeting for a coffee and a chat for half an hour in a controlled environment)
