Funny business, this public health gig

Exactly we banned flight from Denmark for a while, why not SA?

We need to ban flights until the over 65's are vaccinated tbh

Remember when the media was up in arms because the incompetent president claimed America would have a vaccine by the end of the year?

    A rum affair, eh?

also claimed that 20m would be vaccinated.

go to maybe 10% of that

Probably due to the fact there are no direct flights from South Africa!

Really most of the polls called for more restrictions. Any link?

Depends on who you polled. ;)

I don’t understand the numbers at all ? Independent reporting 8 k new cases today and Orla O Donnell tweeting 1770 cases ?
I am completely confused as are many

    It's 8k cases.

I haven't seen any tweeting of 1770 and its not on her twitter.

I remember the media being up in arms when he said it would just disappear. Don't remember him being criticised for saying there'd be a vaccine at the end of the year.

Go back and look at the hospitalisation rates for the last 14 days under 65s.
Increased for all age groups .
Of course it is down to increased numbers of those infected , not saying otherwise.
4 children hospitalised, forget the 0.2% , wolf!

Past 14 days, the hospitalization rate of those aged under 65 was 1.08%
The 14 days up to 20/10/20 that rate was 1.3%

You're looking at the % of those people hospitalized under 65 as a total of all people hospitalized. Yes that has increased due to the higher incidence rate in the under 65's.

I'm not taking away from the seriousness of all hospitalizations (regardless of age), but the higher % of the hospitalizations in the under 65's is far better than having a higher % in the over 65's. (apart from children, that's must be an even more horrible and scary experience)

    Terrible.
As an aside we here in Northern Ireland have started vaccinating our more vulnerable a second time already..

...but then again we`ve left the EU, thrown our little blue flags in the skip and are paddling our own canoe now, thankfully it may have saved several lives.

Really hope you folk get supply sorted out with the EU soon.

You do realise that the UK leaving the EU made no difference whatsoever to the UK approving and making deals for vaccinations themselves? Any EU member could have gone down this route if it wished.
There is no way that the Republic could have approved and made the same vaccine deals that the UK did by itself, we can count ourselves lucky we are part of the EU that have been able to do this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,984 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

So the fact that countries went outside the EU commission to secure their own supply is nonsense? Why have we not seen fit to do the same if it's a non issue as you claim. :pac:

No conspiracy but nice straw man mick.

By the time we are vaccinated enough for life to return to normal it'll be 2022. Going at a snails pace.

    https://twitter.com/vincentbrowne/status/1347602570550849538?s=20

This is an assumption based on one type of vaccine, that requires special storage and 2 doses.
We will have at least 3 vaccines on the go and hopefully more in Q2 2021 being dispensed at a pharmacy / gp practice near you .

So - in your mind - someone who dies early at 83 when they (without Covid) may have lived a full and lovely life until their nineties - is not a tragedy?

Who in the name of all that is good and pure are you to decide what deaths are tragic?

And BTW - you are heartless. I lost my father recently - and to me it was and still is a tragedy. And yes - I realize that I am sensitive.

Do you not think we should be doing all in our power to prevent this disease?

These types of posts make my blood boil. Have a heart.

Edit - apologies - I didn't see the threadban. Backing off!

    100% agree.

Understandable, it's important for people to realise when they see 1000+ in hospital, around 45% of them are under 65. When you hear headlines state "we're seeing more younger people presenting with covid in hospital", it almost comes across as it being more serious of a dose compared to last year, when in fact it's just more younger people are contracting covid.
Yes. Most who are younger and have no underlying medical conditions are now shocked that they can quite sick too as they would not consider themselves vulnerable. Absolutely this happens at a much lower rate in this population but if enough people in those healthy groups contract Covid, some of them will be unlucky enough to become very ill and need admission.

I don't think close contact testing was stopped due to lab capacity. That is being increased all the time. It was more to do with the public health depts not being able to get through the amount of positive cases. The link with the German lab is still there if we need it.

    Good to know .
But it is still a disappointment that if the lab capacity is there , we haven't got the matching public health capacity to at least validate the cases .
We are flying blind without this accuracy in numbers , and now it is imperative that our health service needs to know what is coming down the line , more than any time since the first wave .

Germany has dozens of large vaccination centres ready all over the country. What is planned in Ireland? It doesn't seem realistic to expect GPs, pharmacies etc. to manage a fast rollout once enough vaccines are available.

Just back from a shift in hospitality. It’s got very inhospitable now. Spending the entire day telling customers to wait in the allocated area etc.

The place I work sells about 2 paninis a day, the rest is entirely coffee and entirely not essential.

The restrictions still have a long way to go in my mind as for drinks only my place of work is still very busy and there are often queues of people waiting inside.

Need to either close or operate a hatch service now or it’s only a matter of time before my colleagues or myself get infected.

Bring antibacterial spray with you tomorrow and start using it if people come within 2 metres of you.
