So for hundreds years now the "greatest democracy on earth" has been getting it arse ways?

To be fair the entire electoral college thing (why the rigmarole of someone deciding whether or not to vote in line with the people). Constant gerrymandering. Some serious issues including someone overseeing and running in elections in the same year. The fact that it automatically leads to a 2 party system.

It is certainly a far less mature system than most European ones (which have their own issues). Admittedly this may all be very different to what the poster was hinting at and certainly very different to the ramblings of Trump and his cult.

I really, really hope the likes of Hawley, Cruz don’t get away with this either. Before, during and after the events, they were peddling the nonsense that they all know is bull**** but they’re using it for their own 2024 ambitions.

They are true scumbags of the highest order. To throw out this nonsense is being a chancer, but to continue to do it after an event where on another day your colleagues could have died? Which was all caused by the rhetoric you are spouting?

If the Republicans are deadly serious about disowning the Trump message, then they need to back it up and **** these chancers out.

Many Americans will proudly correct your misaprehension that the US is a democracy, pointing out that it isn't; it's a Republic.

There is nothing great about the quite limited democracy that the US has. You want an example of a great democracy, look to Switzerland.

I can't believe there's anyone (seriously) sticking up for those who broke into the U.S. Capitol building yesterday. Especially if and when they're the same people who were screaming about destruction of property at BLM protests. Smashing in a shop window is egregious, but smashing in those in the halls of power is grand, apparently.

Most people with enough common sense would agree that the acts of violence, destruction, rioting, looting etc. in both cases should be unacceptable.

    Id be against both tbh.

What has happened to all the Trump is a god posters who used to be on here? some were undoubtedly trolls but most were not and were very serious about their veneration.

Most disappeared after he lost the election, the rest seem to have gone into hiding after last night's shenanigans.

Barr says Trump conduct ‘betrayal’ of presidency
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Congress’ confirmation of Joe Biden as winner of the presidential election (all times local):

    10:30 a.m.

Former Attorney General William Barr says President Donald Trump’s conduct as a violent mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol was a “betrayal of his office and supporters.”

In a statement to The Associated Press, Barr said Thursday that “orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable.”

Barr was one of Trump’s most loyal and ardent defenders in the Cabinet.

His comments come a day after angry and armed protesters broke into the U.S. Capitol, forcing Congress members to halt the ongoing vote to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s election and then flee from the House and Senate chambers.

Barr resigned last month amid lingering tension over the president’s baseless claims of election fraud and the investigation into Biden’s son.

Ran for the hills from the 4th of November onwards. Some never to be seen again, others seeking refuge and supportive voices in a couple of threads which you will probably be able to identify if you think about it for a few seconds.

Striking off the dead people who voted, the votes of those who voted in two states, the votes of those who falsified signatures should have been done, would not over turn election, but would have showed cause.
The fact they would not admit to a single vote being illegal has lead to this. If no election is ever going to be disputed for irregularities then the next Election will be a free for all. It's not a good precedent that no matter what the fraud it will be taken as truth.
The whole recount of the same votes was a joke, nothing wrong with the counting, but check them. That would have taken time, but every vote was counted.
Show some cause, strike off a few illegal votes, give them their little victory, but Biden still wins.

What the Trump campaign attempted was to induce doubt about the integrity of the elections through engaging in a massive trawl of voting records in the hope of finding a little nugget to hang onto that they could then claim was widespread. They also only looked to review counties or precincts where Biden had a significant win as these are the ones where any irregularity found had a bias towards Biden. If they took a random selection of counties, any bias would be equally random for the simple reason that there was no campaign, orchestrated or otherwise, to influence the outcome of the election, other than actually getting people eligible to vote to vote.

Barr is on full damage limitation mode. As soon as Trump lost the election the rat was already on a piece of driftwood. Had something like this happened with a year to run on the presidency he would have been cheerleader in chief. A truly vile individual. At least Trump is a simpleton.

Can I ask how if they had managed to take over those buildings last night how that would have lead to them taking control of the entire Government of the US ?
I mean the riot squad would just have to roll up storm the place and battered them out the door. If the rioters were armed bring in the heavy boys. I don't see how this was a serious coup attempt, just a bunch of armed dopes being morons imo

If I shot at you with an aim like Mr Magoo, it would still be an attempted murder, because inept attempted murder is still attempted murder. These men thought Pence was going to overturn the election up until Trump made it apparent he wouldn't, something that was never in Pence's power to do. They searched for the certificates to destroy them as if that would change something, apparently unaware there are 5 other copies of each. That they didn't understand the possible outcomes very well changes nothing.

But, let's imagine. The idea in the Michigan plot, which they seem to have largely mirrored, was to seize the local Congress and execute the politicians inside one by one over the course of several days.

Imagine for a moment the zip tie and rifle guys got into the chamber a few minutes sooner and seized the Congresspeople they were looking for - Trump deliberately withheld National Guard support, so there would have been no help coming for hours. There is absolutely no way Pelosi, Pence, Harris and however many Dems would survive the interim.

By interrupting the certification process Biden never officially gets declared the next President. Trump has no functional Legislative check on his powers for a while - because everybody is either dead or held captive - and is the only clear coherent (in a sense...) authority. In the meantime, why wouldn't he ask one of his nutcase lackeys to make up some more bull**** for his credulous chumps to lap up "proving" his claims and that he's the real next president after all?

We would be looking at a full blown crisis with all the layers of government between Trump and several rungs down the line of succession hollowed out, something so completely unprecedented that absolutely anything could result from the ensuing chaos, especially with Trump's recent round of firings and installations in the DoD.

Even if it got that far, it would likely fail, but only after a protracted period of outright chaos which would cost many lives. The Proud Boys have a slogan- "six million was not enough". Given how they behave at their events, the consequences of them having free range in that disorder to play that out widely are unthinkable.

This was a far narrower precipice than many speakers seem to want to face.

Another sh1tbird who was happy to go along for the ride whilst Trump had power but now jumps ship when his power is gone. Nothing to do with protecting democracy and all to do with protecting his company.

Pence, Barr, Facebook, McConnel, Graham, the WH staffers who resigned after yesterday can all take a running jump.

We all saw what was happening. They're only doing this now because they know he's done. It's not surprising, even Fox will join them even though it will take Tucker and Hannity and Pirro and Ingraham some time but they should never be let do a PR rinse on their role in this.

Call them out on it every time.

100% protecting the company the amount of revenue they have taken from ads around the political campaigns would be eyewatering.

Most of the people who enter the Capitol Building did so based on their misplaced passion for justice for falsehoods , fed to them by Trump & Co .
Few hardliners in their too, those front and center,
but most who followed in were just country folk, the type with no history of violence, or destruction of property.
All those Statues in the Hall were safe as houses, they were never going to be torn down, all the art of the wall was never going to be sprayed over, no one was going to set a fire. Getting access by breaking a door or window is extent of their damage.
Now can you imagine if this was a Leftist Mob that had gained access, and not a Trump Mob. So much damage would have been done. Every statue toppled , every piece of art sprayed over, fires ect.
Of course no storming of the Capitol Building can be condoned

You are getting slated for this, but I can see where you are coming from.
As I said a lot of the people there were elderly, women of all ages, what could pass as normal people to most of us.

And yes they weren't intend on a wanton destruction like some other groups that have rioted or broke into places.

Yes they were not intend on looting or burning the place, but they were intend on disrupting proceedings in order to try get their way, to get their version of "democracy".

In other words it was bordering on a coup of sorts.

But by the looks of it there would be members of this protest group, pro Trump group, that would probably be along the lines of Michigan Militia types, Timothy McVeigh types, Waco and Ruby Ridge types.

They actually believe they are the ones fighting for democracy.

As I said earlier Trump and his apparatchiks have tapped into the massive distrust there is of federal government and the massive beliefs in all sorts of conspiracy theories.

I would bet if you sampled a lot of Trump supporters you would find the anti-vaxxers, the flat earthers, the creationists, the preppers.

These people have started off with such a low opinion of federal government that Trump drain the swamp rhethoric was specifically tailored to grab them.

And to some of these it doesn't matter what members of the GOP say they will not believe them.
They are part of the establishment after all.

They have been living in an alternative reality for years and no one is going to change their opinion.
At this stage if Trump said sorry lads election was fair and I lost, they would immediately claim he was brainwashed.

I am not allowed discuss …

    Sad, but true.

They believed it on the basis of no evidence whatsoever, relying instead on the claims of a narcissist whose response to any defeat throughout his political career has been to dismiss the vote as rigged. This makes them idiots.

I feel some people here are trying to play down what happened yesterday because they want to believe that if the government here did something they feel was unagreeable, like enter an unpopular coalition, that "the people" should have the right to march right into the Dáil and disrupt proceedings until they "are heard".
Thankfully the Irish population are much more civilised then that and will always use the ballot box.

    This too shall pass.

You have had the extreme level of American mail in voting security explained to you over and over and over again. It is part of the reason the American mail service is considered sacrosanct, part of the reason the guy who stole a letter from Pelosi's desk yesterday is probably the most likely to be prosecuted, and part of the reason their postal service has its own armed police force, the Postal Police.

You cannot pretend you honestly still believe this. This is wilful dishonesty.
