Because we don't have that many actual doses to begin with.

Vaccination programme - figures at last!.

    ✈️ 81,900 doses received.

🚚 27,300 delivered (21,808 extra planned by end of week)

💉 15,314 doses administered to date - aim is 35,000 by end of the week.

    https://www.independent.ie/world-news/europe/angela-merkel-blocked-efforts-by-eu-ministers-to-stock-up-on-virus-vaccine-39932842.html
Angela Merkel came under fire yesterday after it emerged she intervened personally to block a bid by European health ministers to secure larger orders of coronavirus vaccine over the summer.

Public anger is growing across the continent at the European Union’s failure to order enough doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine which was developed in Germany and manufactured in Belgium.

But it now appears Mrs Merkel blocked an initiative by the German, French, Italian and Dutch health ministers to order more stocks of vaccine last summer.

    Uhhhhhh..... why?

So when the Minister for Health said the aim is 35k this week . It wasnt . It was 35k in total by the end of the week . Which still looks like it may not be hit

Im all for optimism but come on

Love your optimism. 15k have been done since 26th December . But you think 20k will be done in a few days ?

the fact that they are releasing these figures thinking it makes them look good shows how incompetent they are. shocking

"Bild newspaper published a leaked letter from the four health ministers to Ursula von der Leyen in which they agreed to drop the initiative and hand over control of vaccine orders to the European Commission."

From your own link, I guess we can be thankful she did. They certainly weren't ordering them on our behalf. It appears that your headline is misleading too as it wasn't an EU program that was blocked, perhaps you will do the honourable thing and edit it.

They have been ramping up significantly since Monday. Even if they stayed at the same rate they have been at since Monday they would end up at 30.5k by the end of the week. But given they are ramping up daily it is obviously going to be in excess of that.

Cute - we can all see what you're at with your misinformation.

There's going to be a lot of that "anger" and "outrage" until we get supplies up. The original source is Bild, who make The Sun look like highbrow literature. That story suggests it was in those 4 countries only and you can see why that would be shot down.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭statesaver

We don't have the supply to do more than that.

And whose fault is that ?

Sinovac's Brazilian trial reporting 78% efficacy.

It makes me wonder what place the Oxford/AZ vaccine will have if it is superseded by the J&J and Novovax vaccines in the West, and by Sinovac and Sputnik V in the global south? The fight to be the 'workhorse' is still on in the EU.

That the line is holding will give a greater power to the bloc to push production on secure supply (e.g. Pfizer in Belgium, Germany, and Moderna in Switzerland and Spain) rather than handing over all the power the vaccine makers in a merciless bidding war.

Companies can't get from 0 to a billion shots in a few weeks. Initial supply issues were well flagged in advance.

Imagine if they hadn't taken the risk of manufacturing vaccines until approval had been received!

That readout is a relief, that means even the inactivated versions work really well in an area where spread is rampant.

A treatment that’ll help reduce hospital stays and reduces the risk of death in ICU

A decent treatment would be really helpful.

If we can protect the vulnerable with the limited vaccines that we have, and for everyone else just turn getting the disease into a few days in bed, we're well on our way to opening up :)

Apologies if posted already but Moderna had some positive news today:

Moderna CEO says vaccine likely to protect for 'couple of years'

    and

Bancel added his company was about to prove that its vaccine would also be effective against variants of the coronavirus seen in Britain and South Africa.

Scientists have said newly developed vaccines should be equally effective against both variants.

You'd imagine a company like Bayer are only getting in on this because it's a sure thing.

Hopefully they can really ramp up production and get it to the masses ASAP

Once we hopefully have AstraZeneca approved no waiting time after jab it seems. This will
    Speed things up a bit

Is this another speed/emergency over best practice decision by the MHRA I wonder. It certain spares space and setup needed for mass vacination centres.

And what if 1k-2k are damaged during logistics? No second dose then for some people?

In Dutch so you'll have to translate but the Deputy Director of the EMA says that Astra Zeneca have provided additional data over the last week. Assuming there are no more issues they could begin the process in the coming days with approval in a few weeks.

We won't be getting more vaccines by the end of the week (when we will have 48k delivered)

What do you want. 24/7 vaccinations on Monday and 6 days with no vaccinations (Tuesday to Sunday).
