Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where are we going for protein?

    Hi

I'm looking for places to buy protein and other bits and pieces now that brexit has happened. I generally go to MyProtein, and I find the prices great (especially when there are sales on).

Are there any good EU based alternatives so I can avoid VAT / Customs. Or would it be worth sucking up the added cost on MyProtein.

    Thanks

The same bulk powders that got fined for false claims about the nutritional profile and protein content in their products.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Patsy167

Not a Bulk Powders fan boy but the false claims seem to relate to their fringe products.

    https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/sports-nutrition-products-company-fined-after-trading-standards-investigation-2639188

The level of protein in some of the products was found insufficient to make the health claim "protein contributes to the growth of muscle mass" or the nutrition claim "source of protein" - significant, particularly amongst the fitness community for whom these types of claims are important when buying a product.

A great site for comparing the quality of various protein brands is https://labdoor.com/

All things considered, I have found both MyProtein and BulkPowders excellent. The quality, price, and service is outstanding. I only use them for their basic protein lines and not any of the other gypsy magic products.

I was in Holland & Barrett yesterday and it pained me to watch the gentleman in front of me pay over €60 for a 2kg tub of protein. I considered giving him a friendly heads-up about Bulk/MyProtein but I figured that would have been out of order and none of my business, so I let it slide

I almost rage-quit MyProtein once because I accidentally ordered unflavoured whey, and when I tried to cancel the order literally 30 seconds later they told me it was impossible, that they were going to ship it to me and the only way to cancel was to accept delivery and send it back (paying for shipping, of course).

This tends to happen with dropshippers, one branch takes the order, this goes to a shipper often different company altogether, who picks and ships the order.

That said, the majority of my protein orders are unflavoured, bought a stack of flav drop bottles so 'm never stuck with one flavour.

I ordered via myprotein.ie and they shipped on 6th January. My DPD tracking link brought me to DPD UK, so I can only assume it's being shipped from their UK base...and of course it hasn't budged since then.

I’m pretty sure it was announced DPD has stopped deliveries to Ireland until at least the 12th jan

Jesus first i heard of that. Am vegan so buy all my bcca and vegan powders from them. Surely they've tightened things up since and safe enough? Wonder how much discrepancy there was between their claims and actual protein?

As has been said above, it was primarily around the protein levels in some products like their protein bars, nut butters, maca powders and the claims on the labelling about nutritional benefits and being a good source of protein for building muscle mass.

Did quick search and couldn't find the actual results eg was protein content 10% less than advertised ,50%? Big difference there, especially as most of my protein comes from their products. Anyway surely theyve fixed the labelling , theyd hardly risk being fined another 100k. Theyre not like a big tech company who can afford that

Less than enough to claim being a source of protein for some of the nut butters I believe.

I don't think it was the protein powders per se.

You need to sort out your diet if most protein is from supplements not a long term healthy diet!
And I'm not vegan bashing must be better alternatives?

I exaggerated..Just did a count and 50% comes from shakes and bcca..The rest from tofu, beans etc.The sheer volume of food id have to eat as a vegan to get 2g per kg BW would mean id be so stuffed i wouldn't be able to lift 😂Would need to eat 700g of lentils a day.

Clarence Kennedy did a video on his diet as a vegan...you can imagine the amount of protein he's trying to get at 100/105kg (at the time)

    ETA: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=F5fsqg6aJOI

    240g protein / 3000 kcals

Thanks for that. I just found it impossible to juggle getting right amounts of fat, calories, calcium and protein so the shakes were simple solution for one macro. Ill watch that video now

I wouldn't worry about using the supplements because they weren't the primary issue and you don't necessarily need 2g/kg anyway so there is leeway.

The video might give you some useful ideas around actual food but supplements still fine imho

He had 3 scoops of pea protein so 30% of his protein came from protein shake. Ill aim to to get down to that percent a day. Anyway enough highjacking the thread.

I did point out that Brexit happened almost 2 weeks ago and the DPD UK suspension/issues but all I got was that they're resolving this and I will have no VAT etc. charges to pay...seem to be living in cloud cuckoo land.

I suspect a lot of these companies had contingencies in place in case of no deal, that they're re-evaluating in light of the deal.

I've looked at Irish suppliers, and tbh I just can't justify the price difference, at least for whey. I'm not sure how they can compete on the basic whey when if you hold enough yourself, you can get myprotein at 45% or 50% discount.

The one I thought of off the top of my head was Bodyfirst. They have 1kg of MP whey for €25 (delivery for orders under €40 is a fiver). It's €24.99 on the MP site.

But MP have the deals where you get a bigger discount the more you spend once you go over €50 at the minute.

I can understand that, but myprotein are telling EU customers on their website that they have a new (Brexit) policy in place...but it turns out that's not true.

And they're telling the likes of me that my order coming from the UK will incur no charges but can't explain why...the smiley faces in their replies doesn't add any reassurance either.

Could try Bodyfirst. I don't work with them, I swear :pac: Just passed the bricks 'n' mortar the other day and thought I'd see what they had 'cause I know they stocked MyProtein.

I have no idea if the vitamins they have are any good...have never used

MyVitamins is part of the hut group, same as MyProtein, so I'd say it's the same across all their brands/ sites.

I've been ordering from The Protein Works and it appears they are acknowledging DHL delays due to Brexit, and say they are trying to rectify the problem. Worth bearing in mind, despite the .ie domain name they have. The information about the delays is only accessible when I went into their help centre FAQ, it is not very obvious if you were placing an order unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭KathleenF

FWIW when I ordered before delivery was crazy fast. I ordered late Fri night and it's been dispatched this morn. No doubt it will be a bit slower now due to the general Covid/Brexit delays to postal system but they have delivered within 24 hours previously.

For anyone who is thinking of ordering from myprotein, a quick update for your consideration.

My DPD UK tracking was happily telling me earlier that my parcel was on its way and would be delivered today. The only problem was...it was on its way back to myprotein's address!

Then it told me it was successfully delivered, but myprotein have told me they didn't receive it and the scans are wrong...on lots of items I presume...and they're following it up. Not sure who is at fault for that, but one things for sure, it's a mess...and I get the sense that myprotein haven't a clue what they're doing with the whole Brexit thing.
