You shouldn't be in a shop without a face covering, regardless of any medical history you have. If you have a condition that means you can't wear a face covering, you shouldn't be in a shop full stop; you're endangering yourself AND others.
In fairness, I'm sure the woman who was in the Spar last week, far too near me, asking loudly for her chicken fillet roll had a medical need  I won't be visiting that shop again, especially after I then saw a staff member walking around the shop without a mask.

    The backlog grows

Yup, that's about 11.5k since we only reported 5000 yesterday

28,545 test results reported by midnight on Saturday. Wowzers.

As I mention above, we're flying blind without a baseline so there's very little we can say from those numbers except that the daily case numbers will remain huge. As expected. If we assume that the 28k tests was the last day that included close contacts, then "only" 25% positivity on the next day actually looks kind of good. That's my faint chink of fatalistic optimisim for today :D

Anecdotally though I'm hearing of close contacts who are ringing GPs and feigning symptoms in order to get tested. So, still we don't know.

Will we see a situation wephere leave is cancelled for healthcare staff and nurses are approached to come off career breaks or back from retirement where practical?

Today's drop in positive swabs compared to yesterday clearly due to a drop in testing.

Sunday lower most weeks but to see them keep above 20k is good... that is of course taking into account that we're probably not seeing contacts being tested in these numbers any more, in which case it's a lot of sympotmatics.

I know at this stage my question is probably stupid but......

When you say the backlog grows do you mean that its obvious they won't all end up as notified cases later on?

No, it means that one day (probably this week) they're going to clear the log jam and report 10,000-15,000 new cases in a single day.

Genuinely not a clue. Look at how quickly hospital numbers topped out after a massive surge in growth. Comparisons are next to impossible mid-flight because the peak is literally just around the corner.

Let's wait and see when we get to ~1100 hospitalisations what stage we're at.

    Shouldn't be long waiting...

Most people through this have been saying hospitalisations follow about 2 weeks after cases so atm, our hospitalisation increase is off of daily case numbers of 1000 a day. There's still a fair way to go before the hospitalisation peak since we don't seem to have hit the case peak yet.

    Swabs in:

    Sunday: 6,486 on 28545 - 22.7%
    Monday: 5,199 on 20571 - 25.3%

positivity increasing as they narrow the parameters for testing. If they only start testing at risk groups I wonder will it go higher?

Jeez, I know there's constant back and forth on here with different points of view, but wow, looking at those numbers and positivity rates, its hard to believe we collectively let our guard down that much in what, 3 weeks, in December. Bonkers stuff.

    Very worrisome positivity rating.

It is outrageous that contruction workers went to work today and many others with such a rate in the community.

    Are they idiots?

Everybody should be at home unless you are a doctor, nurse etc etc.

Not this phony essential worker BS

    Time to get real

If it's an IT issue as they say, we likely won't, atm there's about 16k ish cases unreported (todays number and the backlog). It's likely we're reporting cases today that could have been swabs on Friday and Saturday so we're days behind what we should be reporting.

If they didn't go to work the Chicken fillet roll industry might be dealt a fatal blow.

I have a huge construction site just behind my building, delighted to see them there working, outside in the fresh air not camped together and using distancing from what I can see... makes no sense to add to the panic and close it down

It really rose so suddenly it is crazy.

We were bopping along around 600-1000 cases and then boom, we are suddenly 5000-6000 cases within days,

    Something extra happened.

Correct. We overreacted in March/April . Lets not do it again

I think one issue is van loads of them commuting to the site together, not being on site per se.

You are absorbing a lot of negative news right now and it's contributing to your fear. If you take a break, even from this forum for a while then you might feel more at ease.

I have noticed your posts and its obvious you are very scared. That's ok because its a scary time. Fear can have a terrible impact on your wellbeing so while its understandable to feel it, its important to acknowledge and manage it.

Absolutely nothing to do with the internet. I'm safe behind my screen... Panic attack was caused by people ignoring the maximum amount of people in a room, pile up and take their face masks off... I try and avoid that by leaving a bit early but I got caught up in it.

Something is clearly wrong with the vaccine, countries all over Europe cancelling the 2nd jab and entering new lockdowns.

I have to wonder if the new strain COVID is immune to the vaccine.

Where are you seeing that they're cancelling the vaccine?

A huge percentage of the population are verifiable idiots. We have a vast range of laws and regulations protecting us from idiots doing stupid **** and causing harm to us and themselves.

In December the government did not provide adequate protection for us from the idiots. In fact they actively encouraged the idiots by opening pubs. And the idiots used public transport to get to the pubs. And they used public transport again to visit their parents and grandparents over Christmas.

Every country has a similar proportion of idiots, but not every country has the highest incidence rate on the planet. Just us.

I get you are angry Tony, but we are not the worst on the planet. A cursory glance tells us that

What are you on about? The two aren't related - lockdowns are to stop the surge and the vaccines are to help prevent future surges. The 2nd jab is being held back due to supply issues and trying to balance immunising as many people as possible versus striking as high as efficacy as possible.

Temperatures are extremely low now and the last 3 weeks or so. Its playing a big role in my opinion. The virus has never been in this country with optimal conditions to spread until now

That's absolute tosh, they are postponing 2nd jab to give more people the first jab sooner as the 2nd jab only adds 10-30% more efficacy
