We'll be looking back in mid March saying do you remember when the government said the schools would open back up in January.

I think you are right. :(

I think kids could be off for more then a month if this keeps progressing this way.

No way these numbers are not being fabricated it's a stagnant release of figures without a doubt.

I see that Eason are still open. I don’t see how they are considered an essential business.

You called a poster a" virtue signaller " ,and said people inthe thread were highly strung .
We have only your word for that and the next point .
Of course they are not but intrigued that you choose to change your persona rather than delete or request deletion of posts that may identify you if you have a problem with that ?
But yes ,that is your own business ;)

    Moving on....

I said some people were highly strung. Some people. Then you forced me to retract ;)

    Moving on...

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Plenty of people were saying weeks ago that opening up to the extent we did for Christmas was a mistake.

They said the same thing since last March every time restrictions were relaxed. Even nphet said we should have Christmas.

Hindsight? I think you'll find a lot of people predicting things would be seriously worse by opening up in December last month. Not this bad mind. This was something hindsight was not needed for.

I know this isn't the coffee thread but, is the coffee the same as when it's made by a barista? I've been thinking about one of them machines for a while.

Very hard to get the same quality of the espresso as with a barista working a full machine (makes sense when you think about how much those machines cost, and the maintenance that a good cafe will put into it as well as cleaning it) but you can get close. I think the bigger issue is with getting the milk right.

What the f*ck are people actually doing? Licking each other's faces or what? I haven't been adhering that strictly, but as much as I can, I don't know any friends or family who got it, except my brother but he's in another country.

It is airborne, so the 2m distance is key. Social distancing is the gold-standard for protection.

I hope your right but I doubt it. Even if we switched to homeschooling for Jan I really think it would make a difference.

None of us wants to go back to online learning but if we don't the numbers will just skyrocket.

School supplies keep them open I guess. Anyway I supposed people having access to books is good when stick at home

I can't take a punt at a large swathe of what the riskier people are doing.

Being informed they're a close contact and going shopping or for a coffee on the way to testing.

And I know families of friends who hosted dinners over Christmas. Bewildering.

We are going to have 200 hospital admissions per day at this rate and it could get higher. People still don't realise how much of a tragedy this will be. Maybe 300 in one day. We need to set up field hospitals now

When you say catastrophe, what exactly do you mean. Are we all going die. Its a pretty strong word.

We are getting to the point where if you need a hospital bed this month there is a chance you won't get one. Triage is going to be based on some very difficult criteria.

On my way to work, the redline Luas has been disgracefully packed for some time. At least Dublin Bus have been trying to enforce it

How much of these cases are backlog cases. Cases yesterday and day before v low compared to previous days.

I think we can all agree Christmas wasn't worth this sh1t show.

Yep, people should have been told to stay at home with household and only people living alone to go to another household.

Think they knew this would happen the week before Christmas but they would have had a backlash and many people would have done what they wanted anyway. NPHET have been vindicated here.

Assuming the swabs are 4000 to 5000 today, the backlog still stands at around 10k.

The main thing I take from these numbers is how widespread covid actually was in the first wave back in March/April. We had similar figures in hospital but the daily figures were quiet low.

I think we need to wait a week or two re the hospital figures. There's always going to be a delay between infection and hospitalisation.

Having said that we had much more limited testing capacity in March/April
