As someone who has been posting about Covid on boards.ie before it was even considered a pandemic, I feel that it would be the right thing to do to let you all know that I went and got tested earlier today. So far I am feeling fine, as are the other close contacts who had to get tested after the same socialising. The last few days have been filled with anxiety and dread (maybe because I know more about the virus and its potential effects than most) and it is not something I would wish on anyone. I would urge all of you to not let your guard down in order to avoid finding yourself in my current position. The current situation is far graver than anything we have seen since March and all you need to do is make the wrong decision once to feel the consequences.

I hope beyond hope that I end up testing negative when the HSE gets back to me but if not, let this post be a +1 in the many morality lessons emerging from the Covid chronicles in terms of avoiding unnecessary social contact.

    "Legacy IT issues"

Thats middle management talk for we didnt have enough staff over xmas to sort out the reporting cause they were all gone on holidays.

Actual medics are doing their jobs running the tests etc but its hse admin who are gone on holidays.

I personally know 2 frontline workers in a major hospital who wont be getting their vac until next week.
This dispite the local media claiming 500 had already gotten it. They had a photo op yesterday showing a member of admin getting the vac ffs.

Who exactly is getting the vac and how many have they done to date?

I bet theyve done **** all because the admin and management are still on holidays and wont ve back until 11th.

I know for a fact theyve done **** all planning for the roll out.

Why do people obsess about case numbers? It's a pretty empty metric to assess infection rate. Positivity rate and hospitalisation numbers are all that really matter.

Positivity rate is meaningless on its own as mostly only symptomatic people are now being tested. And there is too much of a lag to hospitalisations. They all have to be taken together, with case rates. Any one on its own in next to useless

They should have probably moved to using smaller words to help those who couldn't comprehend the big words they were using.

Doesn’t matter what the words were ,repeating the same mantra for months on end when numbers fluctuate as much as they did was going to cause apathy. I fail to understand why you feel it’s necessary to post in such a condescending manner do you feel it gives your comments elevated credibility?

I agree they should just post swab numbers. Better to report higher numbers so people understand how serious this is, rather than reporting very low numbers and people not realising it's as bad as it is

The announced case numbers regularly get revised with denotifications given later so there must be flaws in the current system. I don't see how just announcing the swab numbers would be any less accurate than the current system. It would also be in real-time rather than the current nonsense of under-reporting cases and having a huge unreported backlog sitting there. The data is there.

I think they should be announcing estimated case numbers based off the swab data, until they sort their **** out.

We've reached a "when worlds collide scenario". The Covid naysayers/relax restrictions on one side and a Government/Health service struggling/those who accepted restrictions on the other side.

This may be finally decided over the next few weeks. The scene is set. I hope all Boardsies from both sides stick around for the fallout.:D

    Stay safe folks!

Unfortunately there shouldn’t be ‘sides’ in this. Us and them won’t get anyone anywhere and as I’ve said previously, it actually deterred people from getting tested. I think Covid has been rumbling around quietly at much greater than official numbers for the past couple of weeks for this reason. Anyone I did know testing positive, I was given a ‘were they following all the rules’ speeches from those whose view is ‘Do as I say and not as I do’. Everyone is the exception to the rules when it suits.

Well ideally they wouldnt need to repeat themselves but evidence suggests that people dont understand whats going on. Hence the need for the constant repitition. Yet it still doesnt seem to register for some.

So they need to simplify the message further to communicate with the less fortunate.

Actually constant repetition causes apathy as I said. People stop listening as we now know. We won’t agree with one another. So I’ll leave it there.

Everybody understands clearly. Some people obey the restrictions and some people don’t. Essentially a blind eye is turned to many who don’t obey the restrictions. The lack of enforcement is a real problem.

What other advice could they possibly give?

I don't think our own government have a sufficient level of understanding, never mind the average punter.

I'm aware of seven cases since Xmas Eve.

2 picked it up from someone they met in a restaurant. 2 picked it up from a household visit. The other 3 of unknown origin.

In my workplace IIRC one possible case in May . There's now been 3 possible cases in the last 8 days.

You say you know more about the potential effects, do you work in healthcare? Have you seen first hand what it can do?

I know someone who caught it at the beginning of this and they went on to develop diabetes from it. Along with a few more things, losing hair as well.

I read that teeth can fall out as well after covid infection. I read up on another case in China, got over covid ok but then developed acute glaucoma. An English bloke on the princess cruise ship last year, spent some time in a Japanese hospital at the beginning of all this, he went on to get mini strokes (I forget the medical term).

That's the scary part... You might get over it ok but you don't know what kind of issues it will bring afterwards. It's not something to be downplaying.

The key to successful PR is to refine and repeat your messaging.
NPHET have done exactly the right thing in constantly repeating phrases and mantras.
It's probably what they've been taught to do.

    PTD is just completely incorrect

Why did we not go for zero covid? This is the price we're paying now.

I really like her. She's constantly in a roy keane Saipan mood.

It's reassuring that we still have good people willing to speak out on our behalf. I hope they listen.

I think people understand but most don’t care as the virus is not a threat to the health of most people, especially healthy young people. That’s why enforcement is so important.

To fcuk with the border. This is people's lives they're playing with. Ah sure, sacrifice the old. But now look, more young people and kids ending up in hospital.

Hello, I am sorry if this is in the wrong place. I am not using this site regularly and am new.

I am wondering if anyone knows about children playing in clubs, my son is in a youth academy and they were in bubbles of 15, is this all finished now? We haven’t heard from the club obviously time of year that is understandable but is it all called to a halt now?

    Thanks.

Is this actually shown in the statistics? Surely we have numbers of infection rates broken down by age group with hospital admissions. I have to believe this would be a bigger story if we were actually seeing increases in instance rates of serious illness in kids.

Same reason we don't go for zero influenza. It's not possible. The only human disease we have ever completely eradicated was smallpox and that took nearly thirty years of sustained measures.
