If people restrict their movements, don't meet anyone or go anywhere how does that cause further spread.

That's how you stop the spread.

Restrict your movements advice is wishy washy,

"don't go to work, unless you are an essential worker, then talk to your employer"

"Don't go to the shop, unless absolutely necessary"

Right, enough of this for a NYE, to those I agree with and those I disagree with, may 2021 be better than the sh1tshow that was 2020. Happy new year !

At this stage I don't know what to make of it anymore.

We quite clearly aren't capable as a nation or a group of nations (EU/EEA as well as our neighbours in the UK, US, etc) of getting a handle on this at all. If the vaccines don't rollout fast and if there's significant anti-vaxxer push back (e.g. in France for example with only 41% saying they'd consider taking one) I really don't know what kind of 2021-2022 we are looking at.

France is a huge concern on the vaccination front, EU need to help France get that percentage up as a matter of urgency.

I think we all know at this stage that people won't be isolating when they're meant to be. A few days ago someone posted here about a close contact of a positive case driving 20km to buy a handbag!!!

If they don't we'll just have to quarantine certain countries as we can't really afford to keep getting reinfected and possibly with variants of it after the vaccine has fully rolled out, assuming it's a success.

I mean you could easily foresee a scenario where a lot of countries have gotten this under control and some will still be messing around with conspiracy theories and general crazy and will just be locked out of travel to/from.

How in fecks name do they not know. Even a basic stocktaking programme can advise you of stock in stock out. HSE doing their best to destroy what ever remaining confidence the public have in them.

I’m guessing that they haven’t even administered 5% of the first 10k doses and are covering themselves from backlash by not making it public.

Did you get a text notification of a time and date for a test?

    Not yet, no.

Agreed, hopefully it won't come to that though.

I'm hoping it's more a case of "I don't have those figures to hand" as opposed to the system is entirely unaware of how many doses were administered.

Yes that was the joke. Also preferably hide for 2021 as well.

I found todays news conference very depressing.

Did I misunderstand that bit about the additional 4000 cases that are not going to be accounted for ?

I have been watching Aussie news and Australian would be shocked to learn our decision to stop testing those who are close contacts. They test everyone in infected areas and this has proved very effective, as has the NZ way of doing things.

All this woke PC rubbish in Ireland and the UK is the problem, make a decision and enforce it. I am fed up of seeing (on TV) groups of people having parties and flouting the rules and everyone else's safety, spray then in indelible red ink so we can avoid them.

Tend to agree with you, it’s almost like the arrival of a vaccine came as a surprise.

When you consider the massive backlog and the fact that they aren't even testing close contacts anymore, the figures are going to become increasingly irrelevant in the days ahead. They simply won't reflect the rate of transmission on the ground.

Cases are now essentially useless as a way to measure the growth of this outbreak.

Even swab and positivity rate data isn't very useful right now, given the big swings in testing numbers, and now maxing out capacity.

After George Lee declares the world is going to end on Six One, looking forward to the follow up report about that time Matt Damon bought Monster Munch instead of Burger Bites at the local Centra.

Okay thanks for that giveitholly. I'm a bit concerned because I have an underlying condition but I have a secret weapon in case I can't get tested that will tell me ahead of time whether I need medical attention. Might look into getting a private test as well.

I don’t have young kids myself but I work with lots of people who do, we are counted as essential workers. Any suggestions as to what they should do? Although I do accept that many view schools as child care they are also a necessary setting for many children. The only place many children can be guaranteed some level of safety and a meal.

DUring the last lockdown many schools got permission to conitinue providing meals for kids and some dropped the meals sd to their doors.

What's the likelihood of being identified as positive if you are a close contact? Like 12% or something? So on paper the odds are in my favour.
