4363 positive swabs, 16.63% positivity on 26,238 swabs.

Yikes, and there's a backlog on top of that too

The positivity rates in the north are over 40%, they must have stricter criteria to getting a test or poorer tracing system...

According to the latest figures, there have also been 1,929 new positive cases, out of 4,772 individuals tested.

And yet that letter has no real recommendations apart from a full Level 5, which we are very close to and hitting tonight anyway. What is it you imagine they want the government to do?

I think they're preparing them for shutting the schools for an extended period

NPHET warns Level 5 may not be enough to curb virus

    https://www.rte.ie/news/2020/1231/1187136-nphet-letter-covid/

Bar closing schools and other childcare there isn't that much left to close.

Not sure exactly what else they want

Unless the backlog is all added today, in which case we could be in excess of 5k.

Better on the board now than leaking its way into the middle of next week.

Well I guess that puts paid to the theory that the bigger numbers coming up to Christmas were due to extra testing. And also shows that this is a virus that very much thrives in social situations. It's a bit yikes.

Paul Reid said the other day the virus was lost in the community they couldn't trace it anymore. We have lost this thing for the moment so its batten down the hatches time.

Reading this thread earlier in the day, you would come away thinking that the government is the arbitrary enemy, not the virus. This is has been a ****e year for all of us, and the government has certainly made serious mistakes, but the government can announce restrictions until it they are all blue in the face and it won't make a whit of difference unless each and every one of us alter our behaviour. If everyone is complaining about the restrictions and not staying away from people we will be in lockdown for months, but with a bit of sense and peer pressure we could actually get these numbers down. Cop on.
A close family member is currently in the hospital with pneumonia from Covid. It is the virus that is the enemy here.

There or thereabouts. Today and tomorrow at least.

We have at least another seven days of worsening numbers, so we're better off preparing ourselves for that rather than being shocked or appalled when it is. Every single day from now to 8th January is likely to be worse than the one before.

At 16% positivity we've effectively started to lose a sense of where we are. Rates may top out here even though the actual number of infections is way higher.

    Testing and tracing has collapsed.

The only thing we can do now is sit and wait.

Stay at home, fastidiously, at least until the middle of the month. You've done it a number of times in the last year. You now know that 3 weeks in the house and a walk every day is not that difficult, and goes by pretty quickly. If your boss tells you to come into the office and you don't need to be there, tell him to fvck off.

    100% correct,
I live in a small town, population around 1200,
Theres been approx 80 cases in the last 3 days with plenty more to come,
This is no longer a wave it's a fkn tsunami.
The next couple of weeks is going to be a complete ****show.

Did anyone who wanted and enjoyed a "meaningful Christmas" genuinely believe this wouldn't be the trade off? The inevitable closure of schools and far more draconian measures?
    Was it worth it?

I would have much preferred prolonged mid level restrictions til we get to the end of this, so I could see friends and family in outdoor settings farther away than bleedin' 5KM, and keep the kids in school and business open. It baffles me that a couple of days of seeing people indoors has been considered worth this avoidable misery we've been left with....

A really big amount of testing carried out there though, equivelent of 2 days in many ways but pretty shocking numbers all the same.

I guess if things got really dire we’d be looking at redefining what “essential” mean for retailing and stuff around take away and click & collect. Not so much because they’re dangerous in and of themselves, but just to stop people mixing in the short term. Plus also schools and construction - basically March all over again.
If public buy in isn’t there they’ll have to remove the easy opportunities for mingling. They’ll never stop house parties but that’s true no matter what and there’s only a certain percentage who do that anyway.

That's not possible for the ''safe'' outdoor workers who have a filthy portaloo between every 10 people.

Need to stop the panic and hysteria here. Testing now is up to 10x what was being done in March/ April time. Also largely only symptomatic people being tested back then. So when we had say 1,000 cases in March you can reasonably assume it was actually closer to 10k. It’s ok to calm down a bit - there is no zombie apocalypse. Hospitals are not overwhelmed and are well capable of managing any surge which may materialise and in fact happens this time of year every year. Appreciate hospitalisations are on the rise and ICU will continue to follow too, but we can be reasonably confident the system can manage. The end is not nigh - at least not yet anyway!

There's more than just Christmas going on here. The new variant must be having a sizeable impact.

Testing and tracing has completely collapsed.
I have first hand evidence of this. They had local health professionals call up to clear their backlog after 8 days(including Christmas day).
That would have included another 2 day wait before actually being tested.
So it's worse than when it failed in April.

A joke of a country, Paul Reid is as about as honest as a used car salesman.

People need to start showing some empathy for people working in healthcare and hospitals. Because of so many selfish acts now they are probably going to have to deal with what is likely to be the toughest few months of their lives
