They can if they try and if the employers dont agree they need arms twisted. OPening them has had a terrible cost which is finally coming home to roost

So how do you purpose the hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers and essential workers continue if they are to be home minding the kids? It may not be fashionable to say it but educational facilities also provide childcare that is badly needed.

Do you know if cafes etc could still operate takeout under level 5?

If they're not willing to tackle schools then this is going to be a long and ineffective lockdown.

What exactly about schools do they need to "tackle"?

It's just a very crude method of keeping people very local.

I really don't get the 5km bit. If I drive for 15kms and don't get out of my car, I'm less risky than someone meeting up with people 1km away.

Well the political system up there doesn’t in any way help the fight against Covid. I mean they barely agreed to an extension of restrictions because the DUP and Sinn Fein couldn’t agree. I understand there are huge differences there but surely to Christ a public health emergency would focus the mind on it rather than the other stuff which at the moment is not that important.

How do you mean the DUP and SF could not agree?

We walk every day . Four parks within 5kms and all of them packed or at least busy
We drive within our county to an empty beach with hardly anyone on it and it bugs me when we are all bundled into the 5kms limit

Wasn't it to stop putting pressure on hospitals? If you're driving around more likely to have an accident etc. I think that's the thinking of it.

I’m not sure why you’re confused. The DUP and SF can barely agree on whether the sky is blue or not and they couldn’t agree until the last minute.

    They need to close them.

30 people in a confined room every day, not considered close contact to a positive case due to "reasons" and the direct correlation to household clusters exploding in late September.
If this was happening in any other setting they'd have been closed long ago and brandished a disgrace for operating in that manner during a pandemic to begin with.

We've seen how low we can get cases with schools closed during the summer, they're the primary problem for case spreading and everything else is minor by comparison.

Close schools like the British did in March. Most kids stayed home but schools were open at a reduced capacity for children of key workers and those who were vulnerable in their home life.

If the 5km nonsense is coming back surely they are closing the gyms as well. Doesn’t make sense than exercising 5.1km away is dangerous but indoors is not

Pulmonary embolism from car crashes are the last thing hospitals needs alright.

More half arsed rubbish. The 5km thing is pathetic. Either do a lockdown or don't bother at all.

There are some flights coming in I think, just not scheduled passenger flights.
I think small aircraft and business jets are still active between the two jurisdictions.

Nope, ban in place until 31 December and probably will be extended well beyond.

So what’s arriving in Dublin airport from London at 11.15 tonight?

The cases still rose in april and may when the schools were closed???

Leo and the Govt seem adament to keep them open as they are safe according to them.

For a Pandemic, politics needs to be put to the side. Yes SF screwed up but instead of parking that, moving on and doing what needs to be done, the cretinous DUP and their ilk would not align with an all island approach.

Look at the likes of Lord Kilclooney on twitter. Encouraging people to to travel to and from the UK via the Republic. Trying to drag us down with them.

At this point, I'm in favour of putting a temporary border in place with the North to get a handle on the pandemic. As difficult as that may be and within the overall context of Brexit.

Is that his real account? I always assumed it was a very good parody account.

HSE data says they are not big drivers. You clearly don't believe them yet you accept HSPC data. Why is that? No change in position by NPHET BTW.

Santa Claus? In other news great to see some folks going for the bury my head in sand approach. "I'm grand, fvck everyone else" Being asymptomatic is great for you not so good for people and families you interact with and who may not be as lucky as you. Brightside being that it'll keep case numbers down but won't keep hospital numbers down. I don't think they understood "we all have to do our part to keep numbers down " correctly.

It's to try and keep people local, but with a (reasonably) simple message. If you introduce allowing people to drive for 15km without getting out of their car (?) it confuses the message.
