More fantastic news, there's been a worrying rise in hospitalisations of young people

    https://twitter.com/LouisWu1992/status/1343621428885778435?s=20

Those numbers indicate nearly 1000 admissions over 3 days - that doesn’t tally with the official data released - surely a typo on the spreadsheet

Is this not positive though as we know those aged 44 and under are far less likely to have severe outcomes?

Is it not severe enough that they’re in hospital?

I’m not sure closing other things such as non essential retail and gyms will have the desired effect. That last lockdown had limited success. I think a lot of that was down to people being fed up and having nothing to do. Gyms and retail should be controlled environments where common sense is enforced.
People also need to take personal responsibility and there should be enforcement for those that take the pis*... house parties, anti mask protests etc.
Merry Xmas and happy new year. Stay safe and have a bit of cop on.

    Ignore

As posted above the figures appear to be incorrect

The lockdown will last until March 27th.

Have it on good authority so I'll believe it

    3 months of a lockdown ....

    I wouldn't be surprised

Still good luck to them getting buy in for that

Double the lockdown before Christmas and vaccines been given to nursing homes and hcw by the end of February

    Yes that's possible

Still that's a very long time to keep so many out of work and to give society no social outlets

    Agreed

Will be tough if it happens

Being able to go out for lunch or a coffee used break up my day working from home.

Being able to go for dinner with the Oh was also nice

Can't see them reopening hospitality before 18th March at the earliest tbh not unless there's some major advance in terms of cases etc dropping or a hugely accelerated rollout of vaccine which imo is a pipe dream

Russia triples their official death numbers (55k to 186k), after months of slightly dodgy reporting.

    Yeah all that's true

    It's such a shame

I only got out for one dinner with my fiance before Christmas as we were limiting contacts to spend Christmas with our families

There's going to huge pent up demand again if they will keep hospitality closed for so long

Which tbf they probably will and I'll bet NPHET would want hospitality closed for much much longer

A friend of mine went to his ex's house to see their son five days ago. His ex's family total about 12 people, two daughters and a son who were all home with partners with the kids for Christmas.

She texted yesterday to say she's a close contact of a confirmed case who she met six days ago. He has already spent the subsequent Christmas weekend with his elderly parents and four siblings, all of whom are in at-risk categories.

Today she contacted him again to say because none of them have symptoms and because of the timeframe of exposure, her family aren't getting tested.

    What an absolute shjtshow.

I'm basing it on them finishing vaccinating the nursing homes and healthcare workers by mid Feb and seeing a sustained drop in hospitalisations and deaths as a result

But it might be overly optimistic

Non essential retail staying open means people whose job is far from essential needing to use public transport to get to and from work, being in close contact with co-workers and God knows how many inconsiderate pricks that enter the store breathing down their neck. It also gives an incentive for people to make unnecessary journeys into town centres on public transport and into stuffy, poorly ventilated shopping centres.

Not a hope will we see any kind of busy Grafton Street on a Saturday once we reach the 2000+ a day. It's a matter of when, not if non-essential retail closes.

If anything, from talking to people throughout Christmas, I think the appetite for restrictions now is stronger than it ever was, especially with the vaccines starting tomorrow. In the depths of winter, we find ourselves in the worst state yet and frankly people are just sick of it. With the hope on the horizon of the vaccine, I think people would happily hunker down for a few more months with what is finally an actual tangible end goal in sight. No more wishy washy "flatten the curve" or "do this now for normality in the Autumn" (the amount of people I met who thought that it would be "finished" by the summer, never mind Autumn). Whereas now it really feels like we're on the home stretch so please god let's not let this thing get out of control yet again, while we start vaccinating.

Nobody wants to see four figure case numbers every day, despite what some people say that's a very big proportion of the population. Ireland is a very small place and I personally know of three families who were in Covid isolation over Christmas.

The optimist in me says that by Easter (when everything felt so desolate and hopeless last year with no proper end goal in sight) the lie of the land will be a lot better. While many on here have no faith whatsoever in the HSE rolling out the vaccine , it must be remembered that the roll-out is being driven at an EU level and the HSE is just the incompetent puppet organisation in charge of administering it in this country. While there may be some delays (as we've seen this week), I really hope that this won't have a material effect long term in getting the roll out to those who need it.

Really hope your wrong on that date

My sister has her wedding booked for the 11th March (after moving it from April this year) and has it booked for a local hotel for 25 of us

    I’d well believe it.
Although I doubt they’d announce it to the public that way.

There is less and less support for lockdowns each day. Quarter of a year would drive people mad.

They’ll say 6 weeks and extend and extend

My girlfriend is a GP. She keeps talking about the soaring number of mental health cases she is seeing. There is a big mental health crisis out there.

January and February can be bleak months at the best of times. Can only see the mental health crisis getting worse.

There is one thing the government can do ... keep gyms open. Physical activity can cause chemical changes in the brain. These changes help to improve your mood. Exercise helps reduce stress and boosts your energy levels.

There is a lot of speculation here about closing non-essential retail. If the government does take that step, I really hope they segregate the gym decision from the non-essential retail decision. i.e. close non-essential retail if they must but leave gyms open.

These 2 restrictions do not need to go hand in hand.

Gym will be seen as another way for people to meet each other so will be on the hit list from NPHET

I love the gym but I don't see how they could be kept open if non essential retail was to close

100% agree with this and the leaders have stated similar when reasoning on why the gyms are open. Keep them open and allow people to vent and keep the mental health covids at bay. Obviously we're relying people doing the right thing but people in gyms do tend to want to keep them open and will try to...

They will probably shut gyms, golf etc as well as non essential retail

I wonder will they keep inter County travel banned? Can see the household visits ban also remaining

    It will be miserable

There was a cabinet meeting this evening too

Just Simon Harris tweeting to follow public health advice as he left

Some wag on twitter rightly pointed out that the public health advice is contradictory to government advice at the moment

Shutting down everything for months really worked well for California didnt it? Cases through the roof now despite all this. Taking away people's social outlets doesnt do anything except drive people into homes and "underground" gatherings where they can't be policed. I know some on here would really love that to happen (police strictly enforcing gathering limits in private homes), but is that really a road you want to go down? Actually don't answer, too depressing to think of the amount of people who apparently support such authoritarianism.
