Midleton Very Rare 2018... in law was given a bottle by a customer but doesn't drink spirits. Still alive after 2 years!

Ah lads you are killing me here. The promised fancy whiskey never materialised and the father in law just offered me a standard Jameson as if it was a bottle of 40 year old Port Ellen. You can drink as much of that as you like he said.

Thankfully I'm going home tomorrow to the good stuff!

When the FIL here announced his lack of a bottle last night i could only laugh, jokingly thinking to myself that surely Cazale's lad would do something even worse.

That post properly made me guffaw!

I would hope it is. I've a bottle of it above the telly waiting on a good reason to open it.

    What's it like actually?

Lovely bottles this last couple of days. Deanston 12 was class. Plenty of heat but beautifully balanced. The Laprhoraig quarter cask was a delight! Smelled like a leather chair in an old manor house but was class to drink. The ardbeg an Oa was nearly all drunk last night I wish I could remember exactly how nice it was but it must have been great.

Brother got me the Drumshambo Whiskey and I definitely crack that open tonight. Got a wee Laphroaig 10 too. Delighted all in all. Merry Christmas everyone!

Picked up a bottle of the quarter cask myself and ended up getting the Deanston after seeing the photo of it you posted a few weeks back :D

Also got a nice hamper with samples of JJ Corry Armada Fifty Two, Redbreast 12, Yellow Spot, Teeling Single Malt & Jameson Caskmates

Have Bushmills 10, Jameson Black Barrel, Roe&Co (thanks Tesco!) and a Knappogue Castle 12 on stand by :)

Lads you're getting off lightly. For years ago I knew was that my FIL liked bourbon so I was buying him fancy bottles of Town Branch, Eagle Rare, Blantons etc.

Only found out afterwards that his drink is Makers Mark and, wait for it Irn Bru. He was doing the same with all the expensive stuff. I've never bought him a bottle since!

You're not wrong. We had the Santa presents for next door kept in our spare room and he dropped in last night to collect with a bottle of Jameson. I won't complain.

By still alive I meant the bottle was originally opened on Christmas Day 2019 and hasn't been emptied yet despite my limited christmas efforts and occasional whiskey visitors!

Wonderful long finish to savour... one sip of it goes a long way.
In its lofty price range though, I'd prefer the Barry Crockett which has such a distinctive taste profile.

The FiL missed a trick there, should have rolled out the 1 litre bottle of Paddy :)

Finally got to open the BC.

My word that's a drop. Great way to start the post-dinner evening.

Beautiful. Drop of water toppled in from the tip of a hummingbird's beak really set it off. Really opened it up.

Time for the Power's John's Lane...

You just reminded me that I still have a Barry Crocket baby from last years Midleton sample pack. And I have about 1/4 of a bottle of John’s Lane that needs finishing. Maybe after the Redbreast sitting in front of me. Happy Christmas!

Surprise bottle of yellow spot gifted to me today, won't be touching it tonight as I'm out in the parents so my dad is offering all sorts. Currently making my way through a Laphraoig having started on 1792 bourbon (which I'd never heard of, nice drop). Woodford Reserve and Glenfiddich await though I'm sipping craft beers in between so we'll see how long I last. Between the brandy this morning and the wine with dinner its been a long day. Happy Christmas all!

well the lidl ipa cask is delicious. not as smooth as the Jameson caskmates ipa but not far off. have a sherry cask one to try now.

Just opened a bottle of this there now.

I’m getting apple and pear on the nose.

    Spicy yet mellow flavour wise.

I’m no whisky expert but I like that.

Sorry for the attachment but boards doesn’t make it easy to insert a photo using a mobile.

I'm glad you found it funny! To make matters worse I know he has a bottle of bushmills 16 squirreled away somewhere waiting for me to leave.

A real pro would have decanted the 16 and refilled it with black bush or bushmills 10 and seen if you copped it.

Decided I'd bring a few nice surprises with me to my girlfriend's house for Christmas night. Obviously she's not drinking herself, but I organised a little whiskey tasting night for her father and myself, and her mother ended up joining in as well. :P

We started with a Red Breast 12, followed it up with a Blue Spot, and finished with the Teeling Blackpitts. I was asked which was my favourite and just had to say "It depends how I feel on the night!"

It was fascinating to watch the others sampling a peated whiskey for the very first time. They hated it at first but loved it by the time we were finished. Lovely way to spend an hour.

Under the tree for me this morning. Probably not a whiskey I'd have bought myself if given the choice for the money, but looking forward to sampling it.

Anyone know what stock it's from? Guessing Cooley.

I got the trilogy miniature set as a present... their packaging must be eye catching or sth.

    Fercullen is sourced from Cooley:
This sourced liquid has a slight twist though, like many distilleries, Powerscourt are sourcing malt and grain from Cooley Distillery, although, unlike every other distillery, it was Powerscourt’s Master Distiller, Noel Sweeney, who actually distilled this liquid during his tenure as Master Distiller in Cooley Distillery.

    Scottish is he?

Jesus I've seemingly lucked out, however it's gas though, he called RB12 bland after the Barry Crockett! Some man for expensive tastes!

Imagine some Muff Whiskey and Football Special. Chrishhhht!

    Another Lidl bottle.

I must have bought half a dozen random ones from them in the last 6 weeks or so.

    Thanks for that. :D

But I own an MVR18, just means the Athrú can head up on the top shelf and the MVR can be my special occasion dram... Almost as bad as that Weller lad!

That’s a lovely drop. Apparently it’s sacrilege to distill a Malt whiskey on a Coffey still in Scotland which makes that a unique expression.

Just opened a tallisker 10 year old

Not bad at all, pleasantly surprised. Work gave us €50 for Christmas party, so was free

Gifts of a Blue Spot and McConnells.
Selection of some very nice Scotch and 20 samples of Speyside whisky that a group of us will be sampling on a Zoom tasting call over Christmas.

    That's class.

    Some selection there.

Have a Glenfarclas 25 sample that I still need to get stuck into, outside of that I'm a neophyte!

Had a couple of drams and enjoyed every second of it! Lovely long finish off it and could have sat there drinking it all night!

Don’t worry what the Scots say, it’s their loss haha

I suggested a football special seasoned cask release to Sliabh Liag Distillers.

Did the Speyside tasting night tonight. Some nice surprises. Tamdhu was one of the stand outs.
