Happy Christmas to everybody on the thread. It's been a great year of exploration with so many whiskeys discovered, tried and discussed. Most times I've sat on my own in the kitchen with notepad, pen and samples in hand but posting on here, twitter and the countless zoom nights made it less of a lonely endeavor. Hopefully we will be in a position to have the nights to beat all nights soon.

Here is to 2021 and even more whiskey.

    Slainte one and all!

Happy Christmas folks, hopefully 2021 will be better to our social lives and we'll be able to actually get together for a dram or two. It wont be more than that for me im afraid as myself and the OH just found out we are expecting our first baby together. Iv already begun the process of choosing a whiskey to wet the baby's head :D

    Happy Christmas folks!

Great news. This is like the baby and whiskey thread at times. Congratulations to you and the OH!

    Cheers Cazale!

Its a shame the MVR 2020 is so hard to come by these days as it would have been ideal to start a separate collection of it to hand over after 18yrs.

    Happy Christmas folks!

Congratulations! I've picked up an Aberlour A'bunadh for my own celebrations in the spring. Feeling fierce grown up all of a sudden!

I've a roe and co. I know it gets positive reviews on here buy I was never mad about it, I thought it was just 'grand'. I always went for the Scotches before it and this kind of drifted to the back of the cabinet.

I tried it again tonight just to see... and it was actually quite unpleasant. I mean, as if there was something wrong with it. It's been in the cupboard for about nine months, and for a long time of that with about around 1/5 left, 4/5 air. Cork was properly closed. I actually did something I've never done before....I threw it down the sink.

Anyone had an experience like this before, or can explain? Or is it just a matter of personal taste?

I bought a bottle based purely on the reviews here, was totally underwhelmed, I'd use it for hot ones, each to their own I suppose, it'd be a boring world otherwise.

How air affects whiskey in the bottle is much debated. For me if the bottle gets too low I'll decant it into a 200ml bottle. I've had a few bottles in the past that were left too long and had a musty taste to them. I read before that the age of the whiskey and the abv can also affect how long it'll last. Could be broscience though.

I've only ever noticed whiskey to sort of fade away in an opened bottle - not take on any unpleasant character. For me it's just like the flavours die off.
Also the amount of filtration will affect how much a spirit might continue to change once bottled.

    Anyway, happy Christmas everyone.

I bought a bottle of the Aberlour A'Bunadh for Christmas, looking forward to opening that later. I also have been saving a 50ML of Barry Crockett from the Middleton set that Dunnes stores were doing a while back!

That sounds very familiar to the Ratheadon 1.1 incident I had with my FIL during the summer. Lasted no length. Gorgeous stuff.

I've been holding on to my Midleton set for a while, never having the proper opportunity to drop the Barry Crockett. But I had to pick up another set for the FIL so that I can enjoy the BC after dinner.

The FIL managed to schnake the whole "I didn't get any whiskey in" and then landed this in my lap...

I was beginning to feel awful jealous of the posts. Had a taste of the Annacoona during the White Hag stout festival back in November. Gorgeous stuff. But it's staying in the bottle for now.

Nice touch is that I'm typing this looking out on Annacoona as it happens as well.

The missus got me the jug for that lovely retro touch.

Red Breast 12 tonight for a night cap when we're all tucked up and cosy. It warms the cockles of your heart.

Lovely bottles this last couple of days. Deanston 12 was class. Plenty of heat but beautifully balanced. The Laprhoraig quarter cask was a delight! Smelled like a leather chair in an old manor house but was class to drink. The ardbeg an Oa was nearly all drunk last night I wish I could remember exactly how nice it was but it must have been great.

Brother got me the Drumshambo Whiskey and I definitely crack that open tonight. Got a wee Laphroaig 10 too. Delighted all in all. Merry Christmas everyone!

I've come across both in bars and online.
All malt I've had. Nikka are consistently good.
Akashi is cheap japanese whiskey. AFAIK they are more know for making sake and whisky is recent. Also a blend, don;t know whether it's good or bad but wouldn't be paying a crazy japanese mark up. It's very cheap over there.

It is a blended whiskey. But not a blended malt. However the name is also accurate, it's made from All Malt. I'll let you guys figure out that riddle.

Eugh. The wife, who knows nothing about whiskey and wouldn't even know where to begin asking saw me looking at them and went for the Akashi ahead of the Nikka!

Finally got to open the BC.

My word that's a drop. Great way to start the post-dinner evening.

Beautiful. Drop of water toppled in from the tip of a hummingbird's beak really set it off. Really opened it up.

Time for the Power's John's Lane...

Ah lads you are killing me here. The promised fancy whiskey never materialised and the father in law just offered me a standard Jameson as if it was a bottle of 40 year old Port Ellen. You can drink as much of that as you like he said.

Thankfully I'm going home tomorrow to the good stuff!
