I'm inclined to think that we relaxed our restrictions too early, allowing enough time for cases to build in the community before people travel home to see their families for Christmas (bear in mind the time lag between new infections and test results).

    Always the pessimist!

I agree with you on the timing, had it been delayed by a week or maybe even until the first weekend of December it might have been better but the optimist in me (it's not really me speaking, it's my antidepressants) is quietly confident that we wont be like Germany or the Netherlands over Christmas BUT January is be a different matter.

Yeah just saw that. Doesn't sound good.

    https://twitter.com/TheSun/status/1338510453006274560?s=20

Would this be the same as the Spanish variant that has spread here, or something much newer?

Hopefully will not cause any issues with a vaccine

Very unlikely. The nature of the mRNA vaccines in particular mean that a variant which is immune to the vaccine is also unlikely to spread very far in the population.

''There have been reports of the new variant in 60 local authority areas, and it is believed to be similar to that found in other countries over the last few months."

So not actually new. Just new to the UK.

Anyone have Sunday’s swab & test numbers?

How long is it taking for results does anyone know? My daughter with a disability being tested first thing tomorrow morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,173 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Yeah, swabs aren't nearly as bad as the numbers yesterday suggest

    Sunday - 359/10728 = 3.35%
    Today - 292/10220 = 2.86%

We *could* be trending a little in the wrong direction. We'll be able to make a better call on it after Friday and into next week.

The question though was never about whether we would trend back up, just how sharply we would.

The only time it will be known whether vaccines are effective is in a reduction in the number of people becoming infected and ill ultimately. That won't be known for months.

The problem we are dealing with is long term, the consequences are long term and the societal changes are long term, driven through restrictions to varying degrees on every day life depending on the circulation of the virus at any given time and the extent to which vaccine efficacy can be maintained to a high level.

It will be some months yet before that's evident or not with the current vaccine candidates.

Yeah they just added that in themselves. Wonder if it's even a significant variation or they just brought out that language when introducing restrictions in the south east. There's always a few strains swirling around hopefully nothing to worry about.

I'm sorry but I can't see that. Where does it say "New killer strain"?

'He added: "We have identified a new variant of coronavirus which may be associated with the faster spread in South East England.

"It is growing faster than existing variants, with over 1,000 cases."

There are over 60 areas affected, and similar strains have been identified in other countries, he said.

The World Health Organsiation and Public Health England are continuing to look into the new killer strain.

It comes hours after Boris Johnson led a "Covid O" meeting to agree the measures, which will close pubs and restaurants.'

Sorry I had a link to a sun article there but found one with the actual words matt hancok used.

Here's that sun article. I'd take it all with a massive pinch of salt. The timing is too suspect.

More virulent usually suggests less deadly based on how viruses usually try to survive as long as possible. Interesting to see how that pans out.

New mutation of Covid won't be stopped by vaccine.

We won't be back to normal pre summer 2023 at the earliest.

It is "highly unlikely" the new mutation will not respond to a coronavirus vaccine, Mr Hancock told the Commons today.

I was mocked here last March for saying 2023.

I was mocked here for saying a second lockdown would happen

Governments aren't telling it like it is. All the evidence suggest it will take at least 3 years to get back to normal. Everything else is wishful thinking in the face of all the evidence.
