    Mod warnings:
    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    4. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods

    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    • There is absolutely no good reason top try and forecast or predict daily numbers, so do not do so

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

The dakotas in the US are an utter disgrace and still you've Americans in those regions dogmatically rejecting any form of state interference to try and save lives!
Nurses in South Dakota apparently in disbelief that they've residents dying of covid in front of them and rejecting their diagnosis because covid isnt real!
God trump has a lot to answer for

South Dakota population 884k is at 942 deaths now
94 in the last 48 hours alone, equivalent to 525 deaths in two days in Ireland
Imagine that many people dying here? ****in hell

It's things like this that completely change my mind back to the fact that covid is a dangerous disease, sometimes it's easy to forget or think otherwise when we have such good control of it here..

I think they’re at >1 in 1,000 of all residents in the state dead. It’s not like a massive metropolis either, quite spread out and rural. Incredible numbers.

How do they not know what is happening in the rest of the world and the science of this pandemic?
Are they less educated than other states or is their information being censored by Republican biased media ?
I can't understand how healthcare workers in other states are up in arms over Trump's mishandling , but not here .

It’s incredibly political in the US, apparently some people in hospitals struggling to breathe are still refusing to believe it’s real. It’s a heavy-leaning red state, 61% voted trump, and republicans are over represented in covid stats.

Merry thanksgiving to you too ya absolute tool 1000 people in your tiny farm are state are dead and youve not done an iota to prevent it, in fact she is to blame, covid relief money was spent on tourism campaign to attract people to the state. And look at all the comments, half of them are saying what a fabulous governor she is and wishing her happy holidays back while the other half are cursing her that nearly 1000 South Dakotans are dead . USA is a partisan state, I don't see how a state can function with such incredible polarisation on such sensitive issues, middle ground or balanced views on anything seems simply absent

The US system and parliamentary systems are supposed to function with adversarial government, an adversarial press etc.

It is the states with one opinion which are - or lets be honest, which were - considered inferior.

It's a systemic polarization. Trump has shifted the overton window where the hate is betrayed publicly now. Single issue voters dont care for anything else but the single issue they espouse for. The hate will be more open going forward.

The world all over is shifting to a more conservative bigoted outlook. Votes are asked on the basis of manufactured fear and victim mentality from the majority.

Republican governor of Wisconsin was the same despite case numbers and deaths rising exponentially.
Refused to mandate any restrictions .
It was down to individuals and some of the non Republican mayors to bring in local restrictions, and they had their funding cut by the governor as result !
It is so horrific that public clinics were open treating Covid patients in poorer areas , with staff working for free because they didn't have funding to pay them!
One of my friends is working in one .
This is one of the reasons Trump lost Wisconsin.

It's ok for some of these highly paid officials to thumb their noses at a virus , which affects those in more crowded areas than they probably reside in . And they can afford to pay for hospital treatment when they get sick and expensive drug treatments, unlike the poorer citizens.

Maybe other states like the Dakotas, would be voting differently if they had hit their peak of infection and deaths earlier this year ?
    I don't know , that country is a basket case .

I didn't like his rhetoric especially e.g. about Mexicans, but my point isn't to defend Trump but to defend the idea of political alternatives.

An official political culture which arrogates everything to itself is the worst outcome and you see it in this thread where people are confident that there is one establishment that can institute military policing or mandate forcible injections if it wants to.

It’s make you wonder how people would react in a proper apocalyptic situation or a pandemic with maybe 40% death rate or something.

It’s incredible to see the lack of resilience people have in these situations, easier to pretend it’s not happening and hope it “magically” ends. It’ll end eventually thanks to the work of others, and plenty will be convinced it was no big deal.

Like the folks on here who berate those being careful, calling them scared or saying they enjoy the misery, when in reality they should be thanking them for lowering overall interaction. But far too selfish to see it.

Yes. Like the posts that repeat over and over how cases are low , ignoring the effects measures taken have on these numbers, and that it is only a mild illness , while in the next breath saying they know of noone infected or really sick with Covid .

A lot of posters on these threads lack any sort of empathy or any human emotion whatsoever and are obsessed with the drama of the virus and nothing else. It’s not acceptable to have not seen your partner for 2 months. Go see him/her or find a way. Thankfully mine 10 km away ( and across the county border)lives on her own and she’s in my “ social bubble”

You're absolutely crazy to have waited 2 months.

You do know that there is such a thing as a 'support bubble' which was a valid excuse to travel cross country even through level 5?

If your partner is not your support bubble who else is?

I thought Paddy's over the top stuff was funny. It was really amusing to see one poster get upset at Paddy's comments yet the same poster trawled the net looking for the most obsure and worrying stuff they could find.

It is an absolutely bizarre thread I didnt even post the news about retail sector sales increasing in 2020 there yesterday because a post like that would ,somehow, probably be construed as trolling because it would be so at odds with the way the rest of them are allowed to go on. I think it would actually drive several of the posters to hysterically enragement to see any even slightly hopeful news be posted that would put restrictions in an any way positive light. They would do their damnedest to tear it apart and somehow put a negative slant on it.

And apparently the people who are worried about covid are the negative doomers. The lack of self awareness is just stunning

I can't understand how healthcare workers in other states are up in arms over Trump's mishandling , but not here .

This article is the best explanation I've come across of the mindset in those states:
    https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v42/n22/adam-shatz/why-go-high
Although Trump failed to deliver on his promise to revive American industry, he gave his followers the illusion of power, something they felt they’d been denied under Obama. He spoke powerfully to red America’s understanding of what it calls ‘freedom’...Today it means not having to take responsibility for other people or for the environment. Anti-taxation, deregulation, gun-ownership, ICE raids, Blue Lives Matter and environmental despoliation are its contemporary manifestations. The adherents of this ‘freedom’ don’t seek to build the country but to be left alone – even if it means dying of opioid addiction, or Covid-19. (This was what Mike Pence meant when, in response to a question about virus controls during his debate with Harris, he said that Trump trusts American families to ‘make choices in the best interest of their health’.)

Relaxations thread has gone downhill a bit but it was great, especially during the first lockdown, to have people with strong and articulate views against the restrictions having an extended discussion where things could be fleshed out and all in one place.

Of course now people who doubt the restrictions can be found in every thread on the forum, including this one, so its not as unique.

When will the novelty of Covid-19 begin to wane?

I get the victim complex of today's society and how that feeds into this machine of harvesting case numbers. As a nation, we really haven't have much excitement since Bonner's save in '90 or the wall-to-wall coverage of 9/11.

Surely though, like everything - it runs it's course. When will Irish people in general begin to shun going for a Covid test and starve the NEPHET machine of its data?

I see Iran creeping back into the news. Maybe we’ll start focusing on ongoing wars and geopolitics again

Any chance we can have a thread on discussion and another main thread for just numbers and updates?

This article is the best explanation I've come across of the mindset in those states:

Thanks, really interesting article , LO.
Scary though that such a high proportion of voting public in America could possibly be thinking that this is ok .

I'm amazed anyone is still taking the restrictions seriously. Most people I know are working flat out, haven't stayed within 5km of their home any day since "Level 5" began, have been in countless different homes and have had visitors from outside their own counties. Pro Tip: If you don't watch RTE, apart from wearing a mask, you can go about your business as normal and COVID is about as relevant as the war in Ethiopia.

If we could just have numbers of deaths with ages and locations I’d be interested. Cases I’ve no interest in anymore, particularly asymptomatic cases.
