Do you know which pub, we’re booked to go out tonight?

    Good luck with that.

There seems to be absolute chaos at Amsterdam / Schiphol. I really would have though things would be a bit more organised:

Think I’ll be staying put until I can guarantee that’s not a likely experience at hubs.

I expect by now everyone knows the reasoning behind keeping the majority of pubs closed (can't bring myself to use the W name). But after spending time in a number of food pubs since reopening i feel it's a complete con job.The obligatory meal is hardly ever enforced, and has led to overcrowding in the limited few that are open. This is most evident in small to medium sized towns where only a handful are open.I feel the decision has handed a bonanza to a few and the fairest option would have all open or all shut. Its amazing how the virus has had such a positive financial effect on the few at the expense of the majority.

Yes, and globally speaking, a huge transfer of wealth to the mega companies and billionaires.
I hope there is real political will to reverse this trend once the pandemic is "over".

I think we already know the answer to that.

Dr Tony Holohan: “Ireland currently has the LOWEST incidence in Europe and has protected against the significant mortality and severe illness that many European countries, as well as the United States.”

Holohan praises young people for huge efforts:
“Our younger generation led the way, with the incidence in the 19-24 year age group reduced from 432 per 100,000 population to 41 per 100,000 population. This is an enormous achievement.”

Holohan: “We all need to recognise how well our younger generation has reduced their contacts and helped to protect the whole population. We all now need to follow this example in the weeks ahead.”

Does that mean that today's numbers for Cork are likely to be inaccurate?

Nope, Cork's numbers have been consistently low for the past week.

It's likely most of them have had Covid by now, which is why the numbers are dropping.

If only the HSE, and HIQA could do the same in their oversight of the care homes

I dare say it, looks like Donegal are finally getting a handle in their numbers.

Wicklow look to be back on track too, 2 days in a row with less than 5.

Why? Have the elderly and vulnerable stopped being elderly and vulnerable?

No. There is an urgent need for a vaccine, just not among that age group. They continue to mix freely, despite what the CMO said and yet the numbers are dropping. It's quite possible that cohort is reaching herd immunity, which, if true, would further bolster the effect of the vaccine.

I wonder if there is any country or region in the world where the virus has spread completely throughout the local population, or to the 70% to achieve herd immunity.
    I would doubt it though.

Positive swabs (red line) seem to be capturing the recent slight increase better than the cases (blue line).

Don't be ridiculous, there was never that many younger people with it, don't let the facts get in the way of pointing the finger though.

I would think it very unlikely, however, it may be possible that there is herd immunity within certain cohorts. It would be interesting to do antibody testing on 18-24 year olds to check. Certainly a lot more scientific than simply saying that if the numbers are dropping then they must be reducing their contacts. Especially when cursory observation would seem to contradict that statement.

Flicked through the Christmas rte guide and God, its awful. I was able to pick out one movie that I really want to sit down and watch this year - (the greatest showman on Xmas day). I can't see anything else. They could have made more effort to show more movies and some better movies too. Especially with the year that's in it where we are required to go out less and meet less people. Not everyone has sky or Netflix. I wouldnt blame anyone going out and breaking the guidelines of they are relying on rte to keep them entertained this Christmas and new year. Shocking TV schedule and line up for the Christmas.

There are a few localities that got to about 50% but any testing has come up with numbers between about 5% and 20%.

I'm not pointing the finger. I have always advocated that young people should be allowed to get on with their lives. Most of them could have had it by now without even knowing. Without testing them for antibodies I don't know what 'facts' you could be referring to.
