Just to clarify though, if your kids go back to school next week, before this new drug gets approved, and if they contract Covid, what is the gameplan?

They've had about as many deaths as we've had cases in the last month, though. I can't believe people are still pushing the "But look at Sweden.." shtick.

Sweden themselves abandoned their original policy when they realised how crap it was. Yet some non-Swedes still cling onto it as being a success and saviour of Sweden. Its bizarre

Well what about sweden? If only we opened up.......

For those taking glee in Sweden's apparent misery and pulling the skeleton out of themselves at the headlines, they are really only experiencing their first wave now, as you can clearly see in the attached.

Like the Czechs a few weeks ago, the hysteria moves across headlines without actually reading into the data.

You need to look at death stats. It's the second wave for them.

Look, don't try turning it around by not answering the simple questions put to you first. You know rightly tests take time but YOU said this drug was imminent.
It's pointless engaging with you as you just ignore what doesn't suit you, pick what does suit, blindly assume without any facts and deny clear statements you made when caught out in them.

    I'm done

    #IGNORE.

The OP was also confidently predicting that schools would close. But that hasn't happened yet.

So I wouldn't be betting that this wonder drug will be approved any time soon

Well that prediction was made believing that cases would be assessed honestly and that money wasn't more important than health which has clearly been shown to not be the case as far as the government is concerned.
Since then we've had a long period where every school case was blamed on parents picking it up in the community, we've had the government try to bury NPHET on national TV, leak everything to the media and not take NPHET's advice and let the virus run wild.
My mistake was placing any trust in our government.

Can anyone explain why case numbers are only out of control in Sweden now, considering they didn’t lockdown to the extent others counties in Europe did in the spring? What’s changed?

The Swedish people are a pretty disciplined race. They work together for the common good more than any other nation I can think of. Like in the 80's when litter was a huge problem in cities all over the world the Swedish cities didn't have that problem, they were spotless.
I think they felt that everybody would work together, social distance etc. and they'd beat it. It appears they underestimated the virus.

Between April and Jul they were getting 500 -> 1000 daily cases (without a lot of testing) which was close enough to what we were getting up until our first lockdown. I suspect Summer and schools closing and folks self isolating (not mandated, but they did anyway) curbed this initial outbreak.

Those numbers only look small when you compare them to the current numbers @ 4k->5k daily...

I find it a bit weird how some people here seem to get a kick out of the thoughts of Sweden getting badly hit by covid. It's almost like they get some petty sense of vindication from it.

Here's what I dont get. You believe that schools an are source of transmission. Yet you'd stated that you're sending your kids back.

    So what's changed

It is genuinely fantastic to see businesses doing so well over the last week. I've heard places in Cork City are selling more than ever before, demand is through the roof.

Most pubs I know of, especially around Harolds Cross and Rathmines were packed to the rafters too last night

Malahide packed last night too. People leaving the pub at 8.30, obviously had more than a couple of pints and headed into another pub. Before any one says well you were there too we had to wait outside the restaurant for our table to be ready as it was full!! Was like a regular Christmas friday. A lovely change tbh

Pros and cons t it. Nice to see business's recover somewhat financially but the negative probably outweigh the short term gain.

Has there been an uptick in GP referrals for tests?
First time in a month we've had 12k+ swabs for 4 days in a row.

There has indeed been a marginal increase yes particularly in Carlow, Laois, Galway, Monaghan and Waterford
