Well as a drug it has a good historical base to start from the australian one didnot. HCQ is another kettle of mixed results and some flawed trials but yet may still be of a minority use. So you are not comparing like with like. But yes you are correct alot of things can happen on the road to aprroval but it is absolutely too early to knock it on its head as the trial data is looking good so far.

Alot of people understandbly are very happy with the good news part regarding vaccines but we cannot lose sight of searching for even more effective treatments as the vaccines may not cover all eventualitys. I look ahead always how about you?

Should we loose sight of those who are vaccine non responders or those who cannot take them due to their immune systems or pregnancy status at the moment or older people who may mount a good enough response?
Nobody has knocked it on the head. At best they have said do proper clinical trials to see.

    313 new cases.

    3 additional deaths.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

70 of the cases were in Dublin, 31 were in Mayo, 21 were in Kilkenny, 19 were in Donegal, 18 were in Laois and the remaining 154 cases are spread across 19 other counties.
Mayo is new to bigger numbers, what's happening there?

Were the deaths in the last 24hrs or the last 24 days

They were notified in the last 24 hours, as they always are. When they occurred often comes later.

Now that Listowel is under control, Kerry has the second-lowest incidence, behind only Leitrim:

As I mentioned earlier, Lorry claims to have 20 different studies including more than 10 randomised controlled clinical trials.

I truly believe they'll get a compassionate use authorisation in the US in a matter of weeks. Things are horrendous over there right now, they can't just ignore this.
If they do get authorisation over there it won't be long before it's an option everywhere.

The authorisation in the US would have no bearing whatsoever on it's licencing here.

No it would not. Only after large scale clinical tests and proper licencing applications would it even be considered. Tests to date were far too small.

You can assume all you like but it has to go through proper channels.

This is an old drug, 40 years old with FTA approval for both animal and human use.
We have vaccines using substances never used before which have been approved very quickly.
I don't think it would take very long.

How many trials are enough in your estimation?

You think and don't think plenty but the fact remains that it has to be properly tested and approved for particular use. It's current approval is very specific for very Good reasons.
You can keep harping in about it being quick but, while it could be quicker than of old, it will still take time. It won't be approved before your kids are back at school and not before the vaccine licencing.

It is safe but approved for certain uses. Trials are needed to show that it can be recommended for effective COVID treatment.

You are talking in very general terms there and not pointing out how many trials are required or giving an estimation of how long you think it will take.
What's proper testing? CDC not good enough? This is what they are looking for now. They want them to review all the trials and hopefully then move forward.

Not from what I've read. No large scale trials like they did with the Solidarity Trial. That's really what you need to see. I find it interesting that a lot of these claims come out of the US where they have been less than useless in dealing with this, they really look like Hail Marys and they seem desperate to try anything. Now if it is shown to work and done in the correct way, that will be good news but we're not there yet!

But surely you accept that it is simply impossible that it will be available for you by the time your kids go back to school next week?

On that basis, why are you taking this risk? (I say this as you've been clear in the past that you see this as an unacceptable risk to you)

It’s f***ing insane. It’s just because the department don’t want to set a precedent and they’re prepared to put health at risk to do so

I wonder will many parents keep their children home next week. I know I would be giving it serious consideration.
