Not really, locking up vulnerable peeps sorts nothing. Unless rest of the society cooperate.

Watching football on sky there, few thousand in the stadium. Why can't we have a few thousand in a stadium double the size. Its ****ing pathetic.

Part of the restrictions seem to be ensuring people have no fun.

Plus the curtain twitchers would have a fit. "Look at them over there enjoying themselves!".

Government seems to have decided it's just not worth the hassle and easier to simply borrow more.

It's like all the doomsday predictors, ask them for any sort of reasoning and you won't get a reply.

I asked one such poster their reasons for predicting a January surge in Ireland that will be "by some distance the worst we have seen to date in cases, admissions and deaths" yesterday and surprise surprise I never got a response.

It was invisibly widespread in feb and with a strict enough lockdown and no schools we managed to get the peak under control. Wave 1.

We never really opened up full and yet it started growing slowly in august and accelerated through September into an October peak. Wave 2.

Logic would dictate that we’re opening to about the same extent as during the summer, maybe a little stricter, but starting from ~250 cases a day as opposed to <10, and a good chunk of even the strict folks will relax a bit over Christmas and visit family, etc. Lots of fatigue from this going on almost a year will help with people convincing themselves they need that social outlet or “just a few visits”. Most will be absolutely fine.

At this point I’d like to see evidence of why people don’t think we’ll have another peak in January or February.

As he actually come out and said that?! Not exactly the right message to put out there if he has - that he’s being brave and taking one for the team and taking this potentially dangerous, unproven vaccine. Jesus wept!

No what he said yesterday was that he would take it as per the rollout plan, also said he would prefer not to take it as part of a PR gimmick.

Because the psychological profile of Irish vs English is different... here we allowed that, it would be all back to each other’s houses after the match. Hanging out together before it. It’s a social event, not compatible with covid :)

How would Cavan people get to Dublin ? Public and private transport in the main, in close proximity for ages. Zero distancing.

Couldn’t have only Dublin people in attendance.. if that DID happen same problems. So no supporters is the sensible decision.

Is that in reaction to one of the UK MPs, (Matt Hancock, I think) who has also volunteered to have the vaccine live on TV?

What happens to the 'disappeared' listed in the OP?

Is this a 'dragged out the back and a hiding behind the shed type deal'?

I haven't seen those users in a while.

    I'm worried for their safety.
you survived so i'm sure theyre fine

Will Citizen survive the week? :D

If it helps I utilised my survival skills acquired in the Arctic tundra, the deserts of northern Africa and the rainforests of the Amazon.

I agree with fans travelling, you have a point there. On the first point I'm sure cavan fans are meeting up before during and after the game anyway today. 2 hours in a stadium would actually reduce the time they spend together.

As opposed to letting some people enjoy themselves?

    What a negative attitude.

Would do some people the world of good to be there today.

And I say that as someone with no interest in Gah.

Don't know who wrote what you read but it's not what he said. He said he was willing to be filmed being vaccinated not that he was willing to be among the First. It was in reply to a loaded question, in fairness to him.

I think you have a massively inflated view of the average English football fan. From my experience they travel in packs, sing in packs, and would drink for hours before and after a match in large groups after emptying the shelves of several off licenses.

From my experience, fans of any sport from any country like to sing and drink together bar maybe tennis or golf.

Would anyone know the case rate per 100k now? I’m trying to find it but not having much success. Prob not asking google the right Q!

Anyway it’s great to see some life coming back. I’m cautiously joining in, but everyone is different.

13 dead :( Numbers heading the wrong way going into the Xmas period. Worrying.

This number is people who died with a positive Covid PCR swab test. It does not mean they died from Covid. As we know 93% of people who die with a positive Covid diagnosis have co-morbidities, the disease itself and on its own does not frequently cause death.

Around 80-90 people die in Ireland every day. There are no more deaths this year than any other and in fact age adjusted it’s one of the safest years on record. The hysteria being generated due to the massive group think going on is unnecessary. It needs to stop. We need as a society to calm down and develop reasoned and pragmatic ways of living alongside yet another infectious disease which is not as deadly as is being made out by George Lee, Fergal Bowers and the rest of RTÉ and NPHET. Social distance, wear a mask in close contact situations and practice good hand and respiratory hygiene. That’s as much as we need to do. Get a Vax if you think it will help. Normal life needs to resume - the collateral damage caused to date cannot be repeated.

Thanks. I asked because there was a commentator on radio this morning who said, in relation to travel that our rates were too high and need to be down to 25/100k.

Can’t remember what station, but probably RTE. I don’t watch TV.

Would it be possible that the lockdowns, masks, social distancing, washing your hands regularly and no pubs mean a lot of people are living healthier lives?

I'm not so sure. The gains made at the hygiene end may have been lost at the diet and lifestyle end. I have a feeling the off-licences and supermarkets shifted more booze. Then there were people eating snacks, sweets and takeaways at home.
