on the points comparison - how many games were played by this stage last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

Yeah, I took my eye off them for a bit, I really thought Arsenal were doing alright.

Helmets in football will never be a thing, eventually heading the ball will just be outlawed from the game.

    Hi Mitch,

I just had a look there for you & thank you for engaging in the discussion, I appreciate it.

At the time of Emery's sacking Arsenal had 13 games played.

In Arteta's defence, if Arsenal win their next 3 games in a row (Spurs away, Burnley at home, Southampton at home) then he will better Emery's record by 4 points.

A win & 2 draws will have him equal Emery's record.

Anything less will leave Arteta with a worse record than Emery.

Emery wasn't just sacked for that opening to the season though... he'd looked unconvincing for the previous year as well - in particular contriving to miss out on Champions League football when it seemed easier to get it from the position they were in, between the league and the Europa League final.

Arteta did at least finish his first 2/3's of a year with a trophy and some positive steps. Those positive steps have since halted, but he deserves another few months to see what he can do, especially under the current circumstances. I think he'll probably get the rest of the season and they'll reassess then.

i hear you, however football is 'entertainment', and i am sure that nobody found the sound of crashing skull entertaining, nobody normal anyway, and if it is possible to prevent it by wearing some type of helmet i want someone to give me one good reason why it would not be something to seriously consider and invest the effort into

Incidents like this are extremely rare and if there had been a crowd in the ground then the sound wouldn't have been heard clearly on TV. A player is more likely to break a leg (and even that is a rare occurrence) and that would also be heard clearly on TV in an empty ground.

Proper concussion protocols and concussion subs are needed, not unnecessary gimmicks that will have no little to no impact on the issue at hand.

    This.

While the Jiminez incident is upsetting, the real danger is the repeated impacts to the head from heading the ball and less violent clashes of heads. With more knowledge of the likes of CTE from the NFL and other games like Rugby etc, and more talk about dimentia in older, retired players, I can see within a decade heading being phased out of the game. Some associations are already phasing it out of underage training and games already, so only a matter of time it die out.

would be interesting to see how football would change if heading was outlawed from the game - or even how they would outlaw it. Would the ball hitting your head be like a handball?

Long kickouts, crosses - even corners, would corners be done away with or simply change completely cause hoofing it into the box is pointless.

Out lawing headers would in my opinion be an absolute disaster ,

It would be the end of the game we all love ,

I can't imagine football with out towering CB's , or the occasional big forward that causes havoc
, Corner kicks and freekicks would , goal kicks & even throw ins would change,

Players like Beckham , Trent , KDB not allowed to ping balls on to peoples heads no thanks

The game would be pants ,

What would futsal on a full pitch look like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I wonder would you see a total shift in what body types are used in positions,

CB are normally always above 6ft tall would that change instantly ?

Hard to tell because you'd still want the likes of VVD even if headers where outlawed but would guys like Shane Duffy ever make it as a pro without headers ?

If we played them on the bogs of the midlands, it could be to our advantage. None of them would've ever footed turf before so they wouldn't know what to expect.

A few broken ankles down the bog holes as well, we could get them that way perhaps.

BT will bid for the rights.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

No desire to see Cavani receive any punishment, he apologized and understands the offense he may have caused. Social media is absolute poison, total overreaction.

He obviously didn't mean any offence. However, it was pure stupidity. He's no spring chicken, he should be PR trained 100 times over at this stage. Doubt much will come of it anyway. Slap on the wrist maybe, which is fair enough.

I know but sometimes we say stuff without using our PC filters, it doesn't make you racist. Like the Bernardo Silva thing, I refuse to get involved with the SM witch hunts, even there the intended target wasn't offended.

Absolutely. But these guys are probably told day in day out not to post stuff on their social media profiles that may cause offence. The common man knows you should be careful about what you post and we don't have PR managers. It surely can't be too difficult.

I don't think it does make you racist, and I don't think anyone is even intimating that he is racist. I haven't seen any witchhunting, or criticism of his character. I'm sure there's trolls on twitter or whatever but I don't think anyone genuinely thinks he's a bad person as a result of this incident. But the difficulty comes with leaving room for the defence someone else can use "ah I was only havin' a laugh", or "ah sure we're mates". Then you're in a situation where you have to try to judge someone's character and intentions in situations much more grey than this one.

So the FA have gone with a very clear and simple zero tolerance policy - don't refer or allude to anyone's skin colour in your public messaging. Much like the zero personal abuse, even in jest, rule on here.

Cavani must know that his social media is followed by people all over the world. And even if he is using what is a term of endearment in Uruguay, he should make fairly sure it can't be construed negatively in other cultures. Or else maybe use a different word that is not based on skin colour. In fairness he may not be a racist, but he evidently he may be fairly thick.

    Anybody watching this game?

How was that tackle on Anguissa not a free? The ref just looked and turned away. Fofana even put his hand up to apologize for the tackle.

I agree with this - the FA will be hesitant to give it a pass because of setting a precedent of examining these things case by case, rather than simply enforcing a zero tolerance policy.

Which is a shame as dealing with each case individually would actually allow a proper conversation on racism to be had to differentiate what is actually racist from what it actually misguided banter. All red cards are not managed the am we do why would they do the same with racism? It’s not like there is loads of these kind of incidents with players tweeting these things going on all the time at the top level so it wouldn’t be a case of loads of cases.

Cavani being naieve and silly with the post doesn’t make the punishment he will prob get the right call. I love the way when public figures make mistakes , people act like they have no right to make mistakes and should be punished harshly, as if nobody ever makes stupid mistakes in their lives. Don’t throw stones in glasshouses comes to mind, the difference is people on social media platforms act as though they wouldn’t possibly be stupid anytime at any stage in their lives.

I’ve said it before, I’ve been at United games and all sorts of stuff and aggressive crap is excuses or ignored from home and away fans. I’ve also seen stuff at games that is kept under wraps (fans fighting that wasn’t reported) to protect the EPL brand. This is just an excercise in the FA having an easy opportunity to look like they take racism seriously and I’d be shocked if they don’t take it. The FAs efforts to tackle racism are about as robust as FIFAs to tackle corruption within the organization, it’s all about optics.

This is probably more to do with how this Cavani is affecting the EPL brand then anything to do with racism. They would be punishing Cavani for all the wrong reasons, but it looks like it’s progress cause it’s something being done in the name of righteousness.

In the back of their heads Fulham know they will likely need another goal. Leicester haven't been great but that Fulham defence isn't imperious.

After last season and with this current score line it really does look like Leicester are fighting hard to take take the much coveted “most spurs team in the league” award.
