The big urban areas, notably Dublin and Cork, are going to have some differences to the rest of the country. That's inevitable, but the one to watch is Donegal.

If Northern Ireland doesn't get its act together on this and get the numbers down, we're going to just end up with a situation where Donegal will have to be restricted for far longer than the rest of the country as it seems to be the most exposed to being infected due to proximity and interaction with Derry City.

Realistically, this always needed to be dealt with as an all-island issue. Politicising it around Northern Ireland sensitivities about constitutional questions, border polls, Brexit or sectarian politics is a road to disaster. All that stuff needs to be parked and the practicalities of a health crisis dealt with as a single geographical area or we just won't get this solved.

    Tony won't be happy

Tradition suggests that numbers go low and the day before they make their decision they spike up. As if they are withholding the numbers to justify their decision.

As I said before, there needs to be an independent adjudicator for those numbers. NPHET are not trusted and it would be beneficial for them to have somebody else assess the numbers how they cannot be accused of anything

Unfortunately there’s an online narrative that they’re a crowd of evil geniuses with a ghastly plan to keep everything shut.
Falls apart when you bring any rational though to it but still.....

RTÉ: "Concerns are expressed about pubs re-opening. Alcohol had facilitated the spread of Covid".

They've pinned their colours to the mast, building pubs up as a menace. Zero mention of hospitals or nursing homes naturally. Disgraceful bias.

I’ll get on to your man from Stokes Kennedy Crowley who used to oversee the lottery draw.

    He’d be good.

Didn't they have the same guy as independent adjudicator from KPMG for a gazillion years?

Thanks for the figures. Looks like lowest daily cases since level 5. Wonder when figures were last this low.

Yeah he is saying the 'worry index' in the population has dropped and it concerns him.

    Micheal Martin says so

I don't think NPHET will advise that though

Well in fairness to them, it's not simple.

Retail workers have to travel to and from work, many on public transport. People visiting retail may travel on public transport. Open retail encourages people to gather in certain places where they may interact (teens seem to be drawn like moths to a flame). Workers don't get much choice, they have to interact with multiple people while remaining inside.

I'd say there's very few using public transport outside of Dublin as our infrastructure is terrible.

I agree with you it's not simple. Mistakes will and have been made you have to allow for that but I do think that was a really big one. People will look at numbers and say end justifies the means but I just don't believe the move from level 3 to 5 has had that profound an impact in terms of case suppression.

What concerns me now is the talk of doubling down. There's been a massive effort by most already to this point, this 6 weeks had already been a huge ask. They are making it sound like we will take a small break to level 3 and go back to level 5 then until a vaccine arrives from January. I appreciate the need to be vigilant now that a vaccine is not just a pipe dream, but there is still a balance to be struck.

I fear that those skeptical about "Level 5 is for 6 weeks" will indeed prove correct allowing for the level 3 with no travel restrictions for Christmas week.

Going to be an absolute mess in January if they leave level 5. Really disappointing
