really will savour when pubs and nightclubs come back whenever that is in a few years time, i will really savour those nights out. just thinking of those hedonistic days last xmas and spring , even in that time i knew how lucky i was to be single , childless and the world my oyster, these last few months have been the great leveller for those like me who kind of have it all in the socialising sector compared with the smug married with kids group, i find these are the ones now who really dont mind the pubs shut once they have the bottle of vino when juniors are tucked up in bed. whereas i should at this time be well on my way to sloshed having had a cracking evening watching sport and talking bolllix to any barflys i cornered!

you would think the lockdown would have made me feel like settling choosoing life, it actually has seen the opposite , i definitley am going for another ride on the merry go round of party nights when this passes. i really now realise how much i loved those nights out

I also enjoy nights out and look forward to the future if whe we can have these nights again but would also like to find someone aswell.

Lads, nobody is being smug about their life at the moment. This is just yourselves projecting our insecurities. Everyone would love to go out for a few pints and enjoy ourselves.

Spot on! Lol at people saying anyone with a bit of structure in their lives in the shape of partners and children is being smug!

As if having a stable and normal life and being happy in it is something to be ashamed of!

It seems most EU countries are converging on their response. That is good. We need an EU-wide response. Let UK do what they want providing that it does not adversly affect EU.

I don't think places like Belgium, Spain and Italy etc. have much choice now.

We here no matter who you support at least got in there fast enough. But it is just a holding measure for Winter I think, and that is good thinking too. I don't care who is in Gov as long as they make the correct decisions quickly and don't dither.

Bull. You have wilfully misinterpreted a threat by the Vintners to abandon Christmas trade altogether. The "Hello" wind-up toy regurgitates nonsense about no room for bargaining, however this is only the Vintners getting their retaliation in first. You can be absolutely certain they'll push for the most favourable terms possible, and they deserve every bit of support considering how badly publicans have been treated since March. Christmas pints are very much on, you can stay at home and do your knitting if you don't like it.

Proper order from Vintners tbh, there are businesses to be run and they are not there to play ball with the governments attempts to placate the public.

Hanging for a pint now tbh

Vintners probably right tbf. No point opening for a few weeks then closing. Music to the governments ears.

    They'll probably stay shut.

Is it music to their ears though? **** were probably hoping there would be big spending.

People will spend big anyway. Just not on pub boozing.

But some pubs are open doing takeaway pints so I’m guessing they would open up again.

Right or wrong they'll dig the heels in. I think it'll end up being level 2 in December. The idea of going to 3 then 2 on 18th would cause complete carnage.

Is it in level 2 that all pubs must close at 11 or was that an add on at the time?

Think it was an add on at the time but it's hard to see them going back to normal trading hours in December if they open

Would it better if they went back to normal hours as places would be less crowded to an extent (people can go out later) but then again many disadvantages too

Of all the criticism thrown at the Govt. and NPHET, who would have thought it was going to be the Vintners themselves blocking us from having a few Christmas pints? Shame!

Sorry but where are they blocking anyone from having a few pints ?

They're making the point to government that its not worth opening for 2 weeks which it isn't. What they're asking for here is a fair crack at trading safely and not to be told after 2 weeks sorry lads you've to close again, nothing more nothing less.

Why would any business open for 2 weeks for example to close again in 2 week

Your completely misreading what's being said here.

I'm beginning to believe our friend is stirring the pot out of perverse enjoyment. Rather petty stuffins, of course what is abundantly clear he has zero sympathy for the plight of the pubs.

    From article;

Publicans have no interest in opening "just for two weeks over Christmas" before having to close again, the Vintners' Federation of Ireland has warned.

Padraig Cribben, chief executive of the group, said Government plans to reopen parts of society should not just be focused on the festive period.

Speaking on RTÉ's Saturday with Katie Hannon, he said there has to be a plan into January and February as "just two weeks over Christmas" is of no interest.

"I don't think any publican is interested in opening for Christmas and closing down again. There are costs in starting up and closing down."

Mr Cribben also said returning to Level 3 Covid-19 restrictions is not viable and not practical if that is the Government's plan come December.

Under Level 3, bars and pubs serving food can open for take-away and delivery as well as serve a maximum of 15 customers outdoors.

"If you look at a rainy day like today, it's just not on," said the VFI chief.

Give us even ten words explaining how this is not a very reasonable position to take?

I'm not saying it's unreasonable. It's just a shame that the Vintners are deciding that they're not going to open over Christmas even if it is deemed to be a safe time to do so.

They've been closed for so long that it would have been nice for us to be able to give them some support over the festive period! And to have a few pints of course!

i think cribben is 100% correct, what type of business pperson would you be to openfor two weeks absolute madness, God be with the days we were told this was only about flattening the curve and keeping the health system from crashing. i really wonder how the government are going to extricate themselves from these restrictions if the dont pull the plug on NYPHET VERY SOON. Can i remind people we are supposed to be hosting euro 2021 in june, thats just 6 months away, i get it very hard to see that we wont have king tony and co still on the news in june. things are going to have to move through the gears very quick in spring unless euro 2021 is behind closed doors without pubs and restauraunts open in dublin for matches. wouldnt that just be the most irish luck of all , the one time we host a big tournament its behind closed doors with nothing open

Yeah I went out twice in the short period they were open I thought at the time it was a misstep, the bars I was in were so worried about following protocol strictly, that come half 11 everyone was out the door together onto the street in groups.

Usually a night would peter out in the pub I would go to and everyone leave in their own time between about 12 and 1:30.

I think my favourites will be grand as they are open doing stuff now anyway.

Shame that others might not though. A few pints to round off this stupid year would be just the job!

The virus won’t be gone by next June. Opening pubs is irrelevant to whether Euro 2021 will be behind closed doors. At best they might be able to allow small crowds.

But what has any of that got to do with the pubs or NYPHET? They can’t wish the virus out of existence.

The lack of rational thinking around covid keeps surprising me.

    I did indeed.

Such a shame they won't open if given the opportunity! A few Christmas pints would be superb!

As they said themselves there's a cost to opening and potentially being asked to close. They presumably want the government to guarantee that if they reopen they will be allowed to stay open, and if that's what they want they are asking for the impossible.

We now indulge ourselves in a warped little game called "I feel the exact opposite of what I say":

And you understand why they wouldn't open for just 2 weeks then yes ?

As much as you'd like your creamy tasty pint (whatever you want to call it) , 2 weeks being open then closed isn't sustainable for any business in any sector.

The whole point of the interview which you seem to miss is that they want to be given the opportunity to trade safely again and not to be told you've 2 weeks and that's it shut up shop until further notice.

Why would any business trade for just 2 weeks, its nonsensical.

Christ its like going around in circles here.

If this turns out the case then a few of the smaller pubs around wont bother opening if its only for the 2 weeks. Staff costs, stock, rent etc and then the hassle of the limited numbers

It's quite farcical at this stage and getting beyond a joke now. Lockdown 3 coming whether we like it or not. Dr Tony and MM are only letting us out to play for 2 weeks and then woosh 3rd Lockdown

Smaller pubs would be the ones more likely to open.
