True enough. Hitler didn't exist in a vacuum nor plucked his ideas from the air. He had plenty of inspiration from the past and the policies of other imperial powers, the English being most certainly one of them. Even the "Final solution" term itself was built on the "solutions" of those who'd gone previously. He had a huge admiration for the British Empire(pre and in the early stages of the war he mentioned this regularly to dinner companions) and wanted a German one, so looked to many of their tactics and policies in forming his own. In his "ideal world" he never would have gone to war with the British and would have been happy to leave them their empire while Germany was off building her own.

After routing the combined Allied forces in France and romping through Western Europe and just before the Battle of Britain Hitler publicly asked for "reason" with the British: "In this hour and before this body, I feel myself obliged to make one more appeal to reason to England. Oh certainly, but few in number were the WW2 leaders who didn't screw up. His early successes, oft against the advice of the same generals made him overconfident to the point of daftness.

The victors always write the history in the end, even if they were allies. The Canadians never got credit for their efforts in the liberation of Rome and Italy (the Americans swung in and took all the credit in the end) and propaganda derided even that effort with D- Day.

There was a name attached to the picture and one reason given was he was pissed off at the nazis because he had a Jewish girlfriend.

It is believed it was August Landmesser 1910 - 1944 who was a worker at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 1936 when photo was taken.

He was married to Jewish woman and that had already got him in trouble with the Nazis.
He was imprisoned and eventually he was drafted into penal military service, where he was killed in action in Croatia in 1944.

Don't know if you could ever say he was going to beat USSR.
The Germans, including the General Staff totally underestimated the Soviets.
They went on WWI experience, underestimated the Soviets industrial strength and were cock a hoop after success against France, low countries and indeed into the Balkans.

BTW Churchill was also a bit of a looney.
The British military chiefs had to keep him away from some things as he was often going off on wild ones.
But the British generals could contain Churchill, the Germans faced at least being fired like Guderian or at worse a firing squad or a noose if they peed off Hitler too much.
Franz Halder, his chief of staff until 1942, finished the war in a concentration camp.

Until he split his forces to go for the oil fields in the Caucases, it was a distinct possibility.

It was always going to be a mammoth operation invading Russia and then more crucially maintaining that territory and yes, Hitler completely underestimated the Russian resistance once they got their act together and Stalin pulled himself together, esp with the superior Russian tanks, until then, German experience was winning out.

Any post that says Hitler is a thug and will lead Europe to death and destruction would be moved to the conspiracy theory forum by mods.
If a poster claimed that Hitler's aim was to exterminate the Jews they would be told "do not post in this thread again" :P
