It's probable that you're right. However, I plugged in to a charge point in Wexford last week and started a charge from the app. All looked OK so I went about my business. When I returned to the car over an hour later, it wasn't charging. Checking the app told me that the point I was plugged in to was available, and that I had taken just a couple of hundred Watts of charge.

When I unplugged, the socket went out of service. Now, if you came along looking for a charge, you might have been cursing me, but I had done nothing wrong. I just put it down to a flaky socket, as there was a Volvo PHEV working away on the other socket.

Twas a 202 mini. So perhaps a new driver, not so experienced with public charging. Disappointing for them if that was the case.

Cork County hall, Carrigrohane Road got an upgraded AC unit today. Only 199 of the old crappy AC units left to change.

Could be someone who's set a night rate charge on the car, then trying to plug in during the day. I've not quite found an easy to work that on the Mini yet. The Ioniq has a handy timer override button.

I only discovered that override button about 3 months ago. Here I was changing to "Charge now" every time I was at a public charger.

    Very handy button though.

Worst thing is the charger will "connect" while it's negotiating capabilities so it looks like you are charging but then stops, I was using the free charger in Dundrum and it took me a couple of goes to get right.

Hit a snag in my thinking. When I query by CCS or by CHAdeMO, it'll return back as CHARGING for both, implying both are being used. It kinda doubles my usage stats on those units. It's a common fault, so "highest usage" will still be true, but it doesn't help gather stats on whether CCS or CHAdeMO is most popular.

Think i've patched this now (hopefully patching some day will mean ye get to see my fixes publicly somewhere). For CCS and CHAdeMO units which are charging I query that unit to see which one has a start time, and store data for that plug only.

I've my home setup which scraps ecars data lifted and shifted onto a free aws account. Thought it'd be the quickest option to give folks a look, but there's no such thing as a free meal. Only 1gb of ram so it's vastly underpowered. Beefing up the instance might be up to 400 a year. Not gonna do that, but I'll explore my short term options tomorrow and see if they've any cheaper options. Expense will be a motivator to rearchitect it. Longer term goal will be to recreate it pretty much from scratch using as many free aws services as I can.

Open up a port on your home server :p

    It's got more memory anyways.

I don’t think there’s any need for you to show real time data, if someone wants that, let them retrieve it themselves (maybe share your retrieval process as a Gist or something?).

Otherwise, cache everything substantially, which should reduce your overheads a lot.

For simplicity i'm using grafana on the front end. No caching there i'm afraid.

I'd rather give folks as much insight as I can. It'll get done, just exploring the cheapest most available option.

The bare cheap solution is a raspi. (I got spare 4GB one on my desk) However, you need to open some ports on your router. I'm running some apps on google console and they had the first year free. Or you can go the virtual hosting solution something like https://www.hetzner.com/cloud.
I think it is a nice project and I would happily donate some funds to.

I'd rather not go that route (of wanting/needing funds). If it's cheap enough to run i'm happy to do it, and wouldn't say no to a contribution here or there, but I don't want it to be a thing where i'm looking for handouts. I'm sure i've an old PI here somewhere (not sure what spec), but i'd rather take if off my private network. I've other ports open and other services running which i'd rather not advertise.

AWS has some free(ish) options, but I just need to get time to tinker with them. 7 week old and a toddler here so my evenings are very limited. Grafana on free EC2 instance should be ok. Scripts running on lambdas for free. DynamoDB for some look up data. Need to figure out a timeseries database to visualise data over time. That'll probably be the biggest expense. The more memory the better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,874 ✭✭✭garo

Do you really need a timeseries DB? Why not use something like hdf and pandas dataframes? Assuming of course you are doing this in python.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,522 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

Us nerds really were the earliest EV adopters lol

So eh,,, there was a PHEV parked in one of the EV bays of my local Tesco for 2 days over the weekend, not even plugged in, never mind charging!!!

    Reserve parking dont you know.

Nah. Threw it together with ruby. Not everyone's favourite, but quick and easy.

Time series was/is just nice for visualising over time is all, and I had an instance of influxdb running on my home server already.

    Weirdness going on in Westport.
There are/were 2 units in Westport:
Castlebar Street (unit ID 859) & Leisure Centre Car Park, Off James Street (unit ID 1613)

The Castlebar Street, Westport unit was removed, but from their map it looks like it's still there. When I inspect it, it tells me it's unit 1613 (the Leisure Center car park unit). My historical data confirms this ie. Earlier today unit 1613 had the address of leisure center car park. From the map, the leisure center car park unit is gone.
New fast charging options for Galway (clifden?), Mayo (?) and Kerry (Kenmare?). They'll be the slower end ones i'm sure. 40kW.

Going from their IEVOA meet, I can only assume the unit is removed, but being replaced with a 44kW unit. The Castlebar street one was "faulted" today, and was the old style unit. IMO it'd make sense to move the Leisure center car park on to there, and put the 44kW unit in the leisure center car park.

DCLite in Cavan is faulty on the DC side but if you don't use filters it will display green on the app because the AC is still functioning. What is wired about it is that there is a note saying that the AC on this units is restricted. How much can you restrict a 10A outlet and still call it charger? Does this counts towards the 98% uptime?

You can be damn sure it does. Unit isn't down... technically.

    From the new chargers thread:
    Laviski wrote: »
22kw charge points at Galway retail park is gone, currently working at present to replace to DC Charging (as to what configuration who knows).
personally they should have left it and added DC charging so there is both. But DC charging will be better anyways.

Seems the west is getting a few units now. Ballina, Westport and Galway 22kW units all going offline, and hopefully being replaced with those trusty 44kW units like Cavan has. :D

44kW in Westport is a good upgrade.
Westport is well supported with AC chargers but a DC will be great. Pre Covid we holidayed in Westport a lot, (always in the same room in the same hotel!) and the destination charging in the town was super helpful. Made local trips (eg to Achill) very doable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 64,891 ✭✭✭✭unkel

You couldn't make this stuff up. What an utter waste of tax payers money. Back in the real world that works and where the people in charge are accountable, Lidl seem to install Easygo 2 * 22kW chargers at all their new branches. My new local Lidl, opened today, has them. Free for customers to use. And paid for with €0.00 from the tax payer. Can the ESB please stop wasting our money and hand their network over to a private sector outfit?

Think westport has only 1 public AC unit now (down from 2), and 2 hotels on plugshare suggesting they have charging facilities. It'll be 1 AC and 1 DC hopefully soon. Very little for the town IMO.

There were three there last time, as well as the hotel we stay in has a (faulty - see plugshare) destination charger. Pity. I'll correct to it "used to be" well served :P

Oh, also pulling AC43 usage too, for the 7 who used it today. :p

I'll do a big reveal next week on who fast charge point(s) were not used in 7 days, and what was the most used (NI obviously, but more interesting to see what paid fast charge point was most used).

Reveal time. The last 6 days (because my 7th day ago had a bit of a glitch in it) is shows the following. I've not checked to see if any unit was not used at all, but of the
    97 fast charger sites
92 were used at some point
37 were "faulted" or "unavailable" at some point
52 (which includes faulted/unavailable) were in a "I'm less than 100% sure that i'm going to be able to use that charger when I pull up" state.

For example, Blanchardstowns 1.93 days of use in 6 days, is made up of 18.4hours on CHAdeMO, 17.67hours on CCS, and 10 hours on AC43. I can split this by AC/DC availability if that'd be preferred.

Looks great, this is really good data for judging which fast chargers are getting more use, so we can all complain to the ESB about where they're putting chargers :D

We should totally bring some of this to IEVOA for their next meeting with ESB

Interesting that one of the biggest users was in Blanchardstown considering that it's a paid charger and free parking. Must be a lot of EVs out there with no access to home chargers

Once thing I'd suggest is an availability percentage for each charger, so it's possible to see how much use they're getting. You could even split it up by time buckets, morning, afternoon evening and night maybe.

So then people would be able to judge when they're going to a charger how likely it is to be free for use. In other words if we can see that a charger has been used 50% of the time in the mornings for the past week then there's only a 50% chance it'll be free if I need to charge there.

Having said that, the gaps in the network are so big at the moment that there aren't many options for alternative chargers

Possibly not the most objective week to have measured this stuff — I’d imagine the south saw a heavily increased usage this week due to the incoming restrictions leading to a rush to the shops. Whereas the north has been under restrictions for a week or two now.

Possibly, although it'll be interesting to see how much charging is down to road trips and how much is from people who can't charge at home. I expect usage patterns will start to emerge
