Very busy out this morning, long queues everywhere especially DIY stores but I'd imagine they will be allowed stay open.

In relation to the vaccine stories, such as Times this morning on UK, hopeful of first vaccines at end year/early next year - "The first vaccines will be given to the elderly and vulnerable and to vaccinate those most at risk will take several months. Most people will not be given the jab."

If the elderly and vulnerable get the vaccine, will this likely mean restrictions being rowed back a lot, as remaining population able to "deal with" getting Covid?

Well I'd expect it to target those who are statistically more likely to end up in hospital from this, so these numbers we see in ICU and hospitalised should reduce.

Ideally this will reduce the strain on our other hospital services, but we will still need sufficient numbers of those who are vulnerable to buy into the roll out in this 1st phase.

I suspect the messaging will be, "Get the vaccine now or watch your grandkids through the window for another year", but phrased in a softer way.

Getting healthcare workers to vaccinate will be the hardest part.

Give the majority what they want - Level 5 for 6 weeks. Its worth it for the peace at this stage. I will be interested to hear how many of them are in favour of the next lockdown in January.

Don't forget about all those who staycationed and spread the virus around as well.

We staycationed - stayed a couple of nights in a Dublin hotel after our Kerry/Cork trip cancelled due to restrictions on leaving Dublin. We stayed by ourselves, had dinner, couple of drinks, and minimal contact with people such as hotel staff. I don't think that is unreasonable and it's unfair to target someone staycationing suggesting they spread the virus around. Govt. has been reasonably clear that mass gatherings, parties etc. are spreading it, not people having a quiet meal and drink.

Oh but its ok to target someone that did all of the above except in Spain?

Was in Lidl and Woodies is next door - they open at 10 am on Sunday I went past at 10.07 and must have been 30-40 cars outside! Usually very quiet at that time.

Just a reminder about fit young people

Obviously that should read with the virus ;)

It's absolutely pointless with schools open but sure it'll shut them up atleast

I always find it odd that people post about queues when they are part of said queues!

Firstly thats an idiotic reason to do something, secondly the majority do not want it, thirdly people said the same thing in June when we got out of the worst of the first restrictions and look where we are now.

Let's me honest here....years of steroid use probably had effected his heart.

It's common enough in the fitness world for young 'fit' people to drop dead from a heart attack

There’s a strong sentiment to undermine public health advice. That won’t help the country. It may however help particular vested interest groups. It is transparent at this stage. Politicians would do well to listen to the majority.

    About right.
“Another minister said that there is a belief among some senior Government people that NPHET has become ‘violently political’ and that it should have been ‘stood down in the summer after we started opening up’.

believe me i am not in favour of this. its a catastrophe beyond all measure.but im afraid it is what the majority want, every poll has shown that. and at this point, let them have it, they wont want it again.

Really? I don't see steroid use mentioned anywhere in the article, strange that.

I think the cabinet needs to cop on. If they followed NPHET's advice maybe we wouldn't be currently in the precarious situation we now find ourselves in. Such as advice to introduce mandatory sick pay, people are still showing up to work with symptoms. Or the advice to ban non-essential travel during summer with countries who had high level incidence, but cabinet thought better and persisted with the farcical green list. Or request for more public health staff to cope with complex cases, but they decided to get complacent. The amount of advice they ignored is impressive, maybe they should stand them down, wouldn't have a shield for their incompetence then.

    Violently political?! Seriously.

Would disbanding NPHET end Covid 19 in Ireland, what's their logic for such an assertion? Let the Minister for Health and a bunch of HSE pen pushers decide policy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭bb1234567

With major outbreaks in Sloevnia, Slovakia , Greece and even iceland..covid is now out of control in literally every corner of the entire continent. Per capita Finland and Norway are doing by far the best in Europe but even they are still reporting hundreds of new cases daily

I’d like to know who in government, as I would like to ensure that I don’t ever accidentally vote for them again.

Seems like we are probably incapable of managing this if that’s the level of discussion around government.

Yes and countries with lower numbers have huge positivity rates, Hungary positivity rate approaching 20%

They havent panicked there yet and life is per normal but probably will change soon

Just to give a comparison to our hospital numbers, there is no widespread panic in Hungary and most things are open

    This is the situation there
The total number of active COVID-19 cases is 31,060. The results show that 31 percent of those infected, 41 percent of the deceased, and 30 percent of those recovered live in Budapest. There are currently 1,712 patients hospitalized with the coronavirus, 179 of whom are on ventilators.

The population there is twice ours,

It just gives an idea of how ridiculous the panic here is.....YES we need to make decisions and nip this in the bud but shutting down our country for approaching 300 hospitalizations due to covid is just bonkers.

Have to laugh at people being happy that the government are considering level 4 and not level 5. Feck all difference between the two of them.

Polls are not to be believed. There is a poster on here who is 'on a list' and takes part in so called random polls several times per week.

I am told that one retailer is getting more staff in tomorrow and expecting the biggest shopping day of the year. Today and tomorrow (and Tuesday if the new restrictions do not apply until Tuesday midnight) are likely to be big shopping days.
