What businesses could remain open under level 4 but not 5?

  • Administrators Posts: 55,122 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

That is pretty much lockdown without the 5km rule isn't it and professional sports? Is there much difference really or would it just be a tactic for them to say "Not lockdown but"

While on paper there are some differences between level 4 and level 5, in real terms the difference is insignificant.

For example, in level 4, restaurants can serve 15 people outdoors. How many people do you think are going to go for dinner outdoors in October? How viable do you think this is for restaurants?

Anything above 3 is going to be very, very tough on business.

    Why deny the good news?
No one has died of old age since March!

Not sure of your point with black people in tents, are you being racist or something or is it just plain ignorant Covid-19 denial?

I think we'll see nationwide level 4 tbh

Sure the social restrictions currently are from level 5. They really don't want to be seen to do a u turn apparently.

Restaurant Association seemed to support lockdown last week so interesting to see if they are still in favour

It's an old picture from 2018 on the homeless situation in southern California, but the quote and picture is from a pro trump conspiracy theory site.
So a little from column A and B.

As far as I'm aware it's the same? Essential services? I'm open to correction - but what is defined as an essential service is a bit broader than what it was in March and April.

I agree, there's very little difference between level 4 & 5 business wise and considering we're already at level 4/5 for household visits, it won't make much difference.

So the only difference is the travel restrictions?

Restaurant association is absolutely deluded if they think we'll have a lockdown now to save their Christmas takings.

Thanks just saw it. Wonder why government doesn't just disband NPHET so if they're going to ignore them tbh. 6 weeks from next Tuesday is 1st December. Delaying bringing in restrictions now could guarantee there will be restrictions for Christmas.

Ignoring them? Taking on board their advice and weighing it up with consideration to all the other aspects of a functioning society and economy before making a decision is what governments are supposed to do?

How many times does it need to be stated that NPHET's brief is to advise on public health matters and nothing more? They're not paid to consider the broader societal impacts or the economy.

People need to wake up and realise that you can't shut down and open up businesses like turning on and off a tap. The only way to avoid this spiralling out of control is buy in from the public. Lockdown in Spring worked because it was largely well adhered to due to fear and sense of responsibility. They need to find some way of gaining buy in again from the public to adhere to the basics, I don't think putting people out of jobs is going to achieve that.

Yes. But schools will remain open. Lvl 5 is not like lock-down that we had in April

Isn't Nphet's remit to advise as opposed to dictate. I don't remember the CMOs name being on the ballot

It's wish more than expectation I'd imagine. But when a lot of their members can't trade as is or if can with very limited takings maybe they're willing to take the risk.

The past ~3/4 weeks have really highlighted how absolutely dumb this 5 level system is. All it has done is lead to confusion and given a misplaced sense of where we are.

Everyone needs to shut up about Christmas. It's not going to be fixed by then. Either half the country is bankrupt or cases are still happening. It's really stupid and we really have more important things to consider.

I find the fixation really strange. Are we adults or kids. Lets try and have less deaths and a quieter Christmas.

Its as good as over, Trump 70 odd and obese lives to tell the tale after 3 days.
Age of the dead is older than the average life expectancy
Ronaldo get it and does not have a clue why , has ZERO symptoms, exposes the BS to BILLIONS worldwide
This BS ends when Trumps wins on November 3, he will open the States, and by December we will see ZERO difference between a open US and a Locked down country.
People will ignore a hard lock down, its over , its exposed as a huge exaggeration no worse than the regular flu to 99% of the population.

iF you are worried stay in doors and let the rest of us live our lives!

My god you're absolutely clueless that it's almost laughable. You obviously can't comprehend facts. Go back to shouting outside of government buildings as that's all you're capable of understanding.

Great cities, although always thought Christchurch was a renovators delight.

I’d say it’s a great spot to setup a hardware store

All these levels are a bit ridiculous. They are probably going to do a L4 with a few extras thrown in there. Working from home should be an absolute necessity anyway where possible.

Expert advice such as face masks are not proven to be effective. A claim by K deG back in April on Primetime. No need to restrict visitors ,CMO on unilateral restrictions by nursing homes back in March. Experts despite the adoration of some here are not infallible. They advice on one specific thing, government has to weigh up many other things and try and do what they feel is right as a whole.

Of course not and never suggested they were. They are relying on information and projections of cases which have never come to pass. Governments open to public and political pressure, lobbying from business groups etc so yes not surprising they have different perspective.

I'm interested because like a lot of people I want to go and see my parents over Christmas.

Will be a quiet one with them and my kids for three or four days if we can.

Can't see it happening now especially as father has heart problems and I will be working up until the day before Christmas Eve in a busy place.

Don't see the harm in people discussing it though?
