Looks like I won't have to eat it, but I will eat if schools will remain open. As much as the government says today that they will I'm pretty damn certain that schools will eventually close just like everything else. All they are doing is sticking to that line for now, just give it time.

My own feeling on this is that they will move us up at the midterm and then keep schools off for an extra week or two and pray the numbers start to tumble.

So why would you expect anyone to buy into the idea of shutting down the country for 6 weeks when we haven't even given Level 3 a week in most of Ireland or Level 4 has had two days of a chance in a few counties. WTF is the point in creating a plan if you throw it out the window immediately. It's completely worthless already. All it gives us was a few numbers to describe the apparent severity of the situation. As I stated in my earlier comment, Level 4 essential services and retail were only defined on Wednesday when Level 4 was brought in for a few counties.

Does it not strike anyone as crazy that the idea of going to Level 5 has been out there for nearly two weeks and they haven't even published a list of businesses / sectors that would be allowed open? In all fairness it's difficult to publish a plan ahead of time when you are making it up as you go along, maybe I should cut them some slack.
My understanding is that NHPET has been tracking stuff like ground vibrations and sounds/noises. I think the number of card tappings was also mentioned. There has been fcek all reduction in these and coupled with rising cases, they know people are not following the guidelines and reducing contacts and recreational social settings. A jump to number 5 is therefore in order. Unfortunately.

I wonder if they'd do a halfway measure - close secondary schools but keep primary ones open. Secondary school students are far more likely to be able to look after themselves without requiring a parent around and also more likely to spread the disease than kids as far as I'm aware.

That was the most bonkers with them having a minuscule rate compared to ours at the time.

    That's a little loose, Arghus.

What if secondary close but not primary? Will you still honor your bet?

I'd be prepared to masticate some millinery, but without the full commitment of digestion.

Not if today’s traffic was anything to go by! 45 minutes to drive 6 km this morning. Unfortunately an essential trip with the car to pick something up. Otherwise I wouldnt have bothered

Its crazy. Far past time to stop all those at least for this year, given the disasters of county finals they have had

Unless you change the stigma around the leaving cert, you can't **** up another year of people.....

Kids and wife are close contacts so have to stay put till then.

Not much point in them isolating if I go outdoors when my own period of isolation finishes up tomorrow.

How's your wife and kids doing?

Great, they actually tested negative on Monday which was a relief. Though they are supposedly being retested next week... So we have that to go through again unfortunately :(

Right attitude. Presume everyone has Covid. Even if cases are very low there.

If everyone acted like everyone else had Covid we wouldn't be in the **** now.

“Do as I do” rather than than “do what you like”

That’s why no cases in NZ

Secondary students need school as much as younger kids - where will these students spend the day? - quite possibly with their pals and no supervision or social distancing. Online class attendance declines over time as students realise they will not ever have to be tested or have any meaningful face to face feedback on their work. Not to mention another disaster with leaving cert students - it will be impossible to ask all students to sit the same exam having had unequal access to online teaching. Families often have siblings in both levels so will have limited impact on disease spread.

Not an option due to teacher unions etc, if secondary stopped and primary continues there would be strikes

Looking at that they seem to be 10 years ahead of us with an end of life choice and cannabis legalisation referendum.

Time for both of those referendums here and I will go for them as long as there is sensible regulation.

You said that after the summer people (suddenly became) complacent... is that a scientific fact or was it due to the change of seasons where respiratory illness traditionally starts to take hold? Or do you not know what you meant?

Yeah, New Zealand, those idiots. I'll tell you what they are really bottom of the class in terms of how to handle this.

We should have set up 100 of those ICU Shipping Containers during the summer, but we didn't. We did nothing to prepare for the second wave
