How many cases would there be in Ireland now if there were no masks? Anyone seen any research? I presume the answer is the exact same amount.

Well Tony was anti mask but thankfully people and the Govt. thought better. I am convinced they have some effect, although perhaps they are a crutch.

Have a look at Sweden. Mask-wearing is not a thing there.

I heard a story about a group of Chinese on a plane last February who soiled themselves instead of using the toilet for fear of catching covid. I guess they take this sh1t more serious than we do.

East Asia as a whole are much more individually disciplined to adhere to rules set out by authority than the Western world.

In this case, at all costs even if ****ting themselves on a plane.

On Dublin, the incidence rate isn't actually falling - it's just that other counties are doing much, much worse. So I wouldn't be exactly lauding Dublin as a test case for Level 3.

    Dublin hospitalisations are falling however.

As some would say about possible level 5 it would be perfectly splendid
    Or
As I would say, it’s an absolute s**t show what’s going on!
What I want to see as will the majority is what happens once the 6 weeks are over.. do we all go to level 2 for a period with some household restrictions still or is it level 3 and finish off the hospitality sector for good??

So level 5 for 6 weeks, what's the plan after that. Have nphet any plan for what happens then, does the government have a plan. We can't just go into level 5 with no mid term plan never mind long term.

I assume the plan will depend how how numbers go. Very hard to ask the government/NPHET to tell us there plans for 5 or 6 weeks away when noone knows what the situation will be like then.
If we could predict the future it would be easier but we can't!

If we could trust people to follow guidelines we would expect things to have improved alot but we can't.

the big problem is and nobody seems to want to give an answer is what happens when we go level 5 for a month then back to level 2 in january /februaruy when case numbers fall to 20-30 a day, as they will. when level 2 comes again numbers will shoot up again in march, so is it back to level 5 restrictions next march and into summer , everything cancelled again? or do they say once vaccine is available in march earliest, that oh we have vaccine all restrictions lifted now up to you joe public to get vaccinated. now march is very optimistic for the ordinary irish person to get hands on vaccine, so are we looking at all next year wrote off as well on level 2-4 lockdowns every 2-3 months?

    Also Swedish PM
And even Sweden, whose anti-lockdown approach was an international outlier, has raised the prospect of tougher restrictions. “Too many are not following the rules,” said the prime minister, Stefan Löfven. “If there is no correction, we will have to tighten up.”

    Are they?

One the Dub ICUs was newer capacity this week and we haven’t had any clear numbers since have we?

Numbers in Dublin are going up, hospital numbers will soon follow

We didn't have track and trace at the start of all this, we had people presenting themselves to hospital, or Doctors , and then they were tested.
We are seeing so many cases now because we are testing contacts of contacts of contacts, and most of them never knew they had it, and are at various stages of the virus, day 9, day 14, day 12. It looks bad, but the fact 100's of people a day test positive means very little. We are testing more and more, so it's only going to get worse'' look worse'' the more we test.

It's ironic that now months later European leaders are saying what Trump did months ago, '' we're testing more, more tests equals more cases''

What really matters is protecting the vulnerable, while increasing ICU places.

The issue that is not being addressed by Tony and his crew is what we are supposed to do even if we manage to reduce the numbers down to low levels. The proposed 6 weeks at level 5 might stabilise the numbers but what happens then?
    There is no plan.

So why would you expect anyone to buy into the idea of shutting down the country for 6 weeks when we haven't even given Level 3 a week in most of Ireland or Level 4 has had two days of a chance in a few counties. WTF is the point in creating a plan if you throw it out the window immediately. It's completely worthless already. All it gives us was a few numbers to describe the apparent severity of the situation. As I stated in my earlier comment, Level 4 essential services and retail were only defined on Wednesday when Level 4 was brought in for a few counties.

Does it not strike anyone as crazy that the idea of going to Level 5 has been out there for nearly two weeks and they haven't even published a list of businesses / sectors that would be allowed open? In all fairness it's difficult to publish a plan ahead of time when you are making it up as you go along, maybe I should cut them some slack.

I’d say the smart money is on this lockdown plus one more in the springtime before hopefully a vaccine starts to be rolled out. I guess if we get enough takers it might mean the autumn lockdown won’t be as severe.

Ive been very much in favour of trying to keep the schools open as much as possible, but I think if we are going to go to level 5 for 6 weeks, then they need to go all out and close the schools as well.
A 6 week closure for schools in the grand scheme of things won't be the worst. I Don't think they should be closed for any longer than that though.
