Sorry but what does closing outdoor dining actually achieve? Its already limited to 15 people, a further restriction isn't going to change the course of spread. You wouldn't be making any difference. Its not exactly an area that needs targeted intervention

I've seen plenty of places that are ignoring the max of 15 and heard of places that have had people come indoors when it rains.

With Irish attitude to drink, and the bank holiday weekend coming up, I think it's asking for people to take the piss tbh.

Also in relation to your edit on guidance on household visots, that's precisely why we're fcuked. It should be a ban and fines for breaking it. People are clearly breaking it and all this guidance stuff is just the government pussy footing around actually doing anything as they're afraid the civil liberties crowd will start whinging

NPHET should be disbanded. We need A full time dedicated team led by a Sec Gen feeding into the senior official group and the Taoiseach. They will not only be tasked with public health advice but will also be responsible to drive (and ensure accountability) the necessary health mitigation measures needed to keep society as open as possible for the next 18 months.

Nphet have not considered the mental health of our people - they are all about the headline covid figures. As a teacher and parent I absolutely want schools open - our kids have been badly damaged by the previous lockdown. Current 6th years are having serious mental health issues on a scale never seen before but obviously not being counted by NPHET. Lockdown will not solve anything - the good weather (allowing people outdoors) during the last lockdown was a major factor in figures declining and general hygiene measures.

I will open all my doors and windows and freeze if needed to keep schools open - All outdoor activities for all age groups should be expanded and people/children encouraged to stay fit and therefore healthy. We have to find a way to live with this and protect those who want to be sheltered from this by giving them the support they need - sitting kids in front of netflixs for the next 4 months will cause even greater damage in the long run.

They need to think Long Term. Not obsess about how many cases but actually have a plan to improve testing, tracing, healthcare & support for businesses.

More testing in Nursing homes,Factories, schools & airports etc & much better contact tracing. Fines for people breaking guidelines.

L5 won't get the buy in even if they did go for it. Back in March this virus was the big bad wolf. People were afraid to roll down car windows to talk to you. We have experienced life since then and rightly or wrongly many will not be phased by more hysteria

I totally agree with this. We are not getting out of Level 5 before Christmas. Not a hope Nphet will recommend easing restrictions a few weeks before Christmas and allow numbers to balloon again. Even if we are down to 50 cases a day by end of November it will soon rise to a few hundred a day in the weeks before xmas and then in the thousands by Jan.

We are not getting out of Level 5 in 6 weeks. That is the reality.
I've been very supportive of NPHET throughout this but getting quite fed up with the cliched platitudes and the false hope numbers. We need to be told bluntly and directly what to do for that 6 weeks to be even considered. An imminent Level 5 could mean no return to Level 2 until March anyway.

What extra is Level 5 supposed to get us? It's not spreading in retail. Level 5 doesn't close schools.

If it's spreading by people moving around between houses, closing more businesses isn't going to help anything.

Think Henry St. on a calm, early December afternoon. Crowds of people, shoulder to shoulder, filtering in and out of Dealz, Dunnes and Debenhams... Disaster!

So why not go after the irresponsible ones rather than a blanket ban?

People talk about "the Irish attitude" but the "ban matches because one person started a fire" attitude is equally if not more ridiculous.

If we close schools, which let’s be honest, probably has to happen, an alternative method for educating children (including primary students) must be put in place.
If we don’t get a vaccine this cycle will just repeat on and on as opening schools/society back up will just increase numbers again.
Blended learning must be brought in to reduce class sizes at this stage.

Sweet divine...what a comment. Seriously. Get a grip FFS. This thread is just the pits with the same commenters posting waffle and "let's get on with it" nonsense. Thank f**k we have actual Dr's advising our government and not the fools on here.

Going by Worldometer, our deaths have gone from 1798 to 1838 in October. So 40.

And for perspective 2,500 other people died from non covid issues in Sept. I am not downplaying the covid deaths but it is important for us all to realise that the huge majority of us are suffering and mourning lost loves that died without covid. We should never forget these people.

Why don't you stay indoors for the foreseeable future and let the rest of us get on with it? Genuine question.

Cos we won't police it, and don't have the resources to police everything.

Way I see it, there's a minority of places open anyway and if they're all obeying the rules, they won't have many staff, so job losses by doing this are much smaller than closing all retail. It cuts down on options of people socialising , which could cause a rise in house parties, but if you actually focus the resources then on those you might make a dent. ATM, they're diverting resources into keeping people into counties, house parties and pubs. I'd get rid of the county one as it's nonsensical when most counties are fcuked and ban the pub/restaurant one completely so resources can be focused on the one that's likely the biggest driver of spread

Only works if guards actually enforce it of course but they should be directed to and laws put in place to allow them to

So level 4 at least nationwide then

Genuine question my hoop. There is no "getting on with it". I plan to take precautions as much as I can but if the virus is already out there in the community and no restrictions are in place, how long do you think before it wouldn't make it's way to me or anyone else who is being careful? Genuine question

A lot of ordinary people who don't post online or tweet want action taken because they are nervous .
Most of these people also vote and would a Government want to fight an election with history showing they risked the health of the Nation and ignored expert advice.

Except there are already significant restrictions in place.

Something with tweaks, whatever's decided. We should probably ride out these 3 weeks of Level 3 first. Level 4 would be preferable to the government because Level 5 means rolling back 2 levels and that's an awful lot longer than 6 weeks.

Exactly. And people on here saying we don't need more/ any to begin with. But let me guess, Dr Navarro pleaded with.....

Just a quick question for those advocating closing the schools while keeping business open. If we close all the schools, who minds all the kids? I have 2 in primary school, they can’t be left at home on their own all day. So if we pull a couple of hundred thousand kids out of school, aren’t we also pulling a couple hundred thousand people out of work to stay home with them?

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.
