It's beyond doubt now L3 has failed in the capital. Time to level up and bring in huge fines for the scumbags ruining it for everyone. Many businesses are going to go to the wall because we have a large cohort who have no morals.

Language like this doesn't help. You're just looking for a bogeyman.

5m people are being asked to behave in a way that is completely unnatural to them. For some, it seriously impacts their quality of life and mental health. Controlling a western population of millions in this way just isn't viable if you expect all of them to comply. You'll always have people who just won't adhere for various reasons.

There are no easy answers or solutions here.

Everyone who works in an office can WFH.

Take home your desktop, sort a aVPN

All other essential workers have to go in, have a letter to prove it

Apart from that, fine anyone who isn’t following. Fines don’t work? Public order offence then

    Very easy done

Employers won’t let them. I know of many people commuting to Dublin throughout this, who could work from home but are emphatically not allowed by their companies. It’s not the employees fault, it’s their employers, and in current climate, who in their right mind is going to say stuff you, I’m working from home????

UK had 20k cases yesterday, they have almost 15 times our population so we are at 18k (1205x15) if we go per head of population.

Everything you mention regarding office work is already going on, but its not a one size fits all.

I work in a large office 600+ and the locality is empty daily. Anyone who needs to be in has a letter, there's about 50 of us needed in each day.

There's plenty of other employment areas that are open that can't work from home and aren't office workers.

Public order offence for what exactly ? It doesn't have any oversight on people going to work. All well and good throwing out these ideas but there's nothing to do with public order act here.

Fines are going to be brought in anyway for certain things so cool your jets a week or two. Legislation takes times to draft.

Our governments exit strategy is to
    blame NEPHET

Firstly, that doesn't have swabs from today. It has yesterday's swabs.

Secondly, NPHET don't report on the number of positive swabs. They report on the number of positive cases identified by the HPSC yesterday.
    Today's cases are yesterdays swabs.
There was ~950 positive swabs yesterday, and 1200 cases notified yesterday.
That means there is 250 backlogged swabs included.
    We know how this works.

So frustrating listening Dr. Holohan et al., referring to charts/slides during the briefing on RTE News channel now but us not being able to see them!!!

There's no exit strategy, there's no plan, they're making it up as they go along.

All NPHET are talking about is various degrees of lockdown. No mention of the basics like improving testing turnaround times, contact tracing, hospital bed and ICU capacity.

Again, that's the government's job - one they have failed terribly on.

They should upload the slides each day before they start to some centralised source.

That’s the point exactly, there are no easy options. Western society is going to have to suck it up and “change” (for want of a better phrase) for a few more months. It’ll be done in either a semi planned (lockdowns) or totally unplanned (Let it rip and hospitals overwhelmed) way.

In fairness it's not Varadkar's fault or any one politician but he royally screwed up hanging NHPET out to dry. It's the moment that will define the type of person he is for years to come.

    If you say so.

He has to weigh up all the options.

NHPET aren't the only show in town.

Government have a decision to make now.
Either go with what Mehole said last night and wait until next Tuesday to see the full effect of level 3.
    Or take the Tony approach.

We'll be put at level 5 soon for the sake of the economy. This half arsed approach is doing more harm than good. The money that would come in with a Christmas at level 2 will far exceed that at level 3,4 or 5. We need to take the hit now for the opportunity to have a normal few weeks in December. It might result in more restrictions come January but sure that month is dead anyway. The whole "but the economy.." arguement against lockdowns makes no sense right now as it's that hesitation that will end up crippling it.

Nail on the head. Ultimately there's not much you can do to stop this in a democracy. Then you have Leo saying he's not sure if we will be "allowed" to visit our families at Christmas, as if that's in any way enforceable and people will actually comply. Best of luck with it Leo.

I take it you don't know how a huge amount of young professionals are living in the current housing situation?

Tiny rooms in shared houses with multiple people, not exactly ideal for working at home.

I'm fortunate enough to have my own large place with a proper office set up at home but I have many friends and colleagues who don't even have a space for a desk in their "home".

Positive swabs should be greater than confirmed cases, based on that logic

I have to travel in to work. I use spreadsheets all day.

Nothing essential about it, yet my employer is clinging to the fact that we're "an essential service" from the first lockdown.

    I work in financial services....

Government needs a serious lesson in communication and growing a pair. This tar them all brush approach they use never works. In a workplace it’s about the worst way to deal with something. They need targeted comms to the people who just will not follow the guidelines with the consequences laid out plainly. But this, everyone in level 3, everyone restrict visiting etc just pisses off the people who have been patient and compliant and lets the deviant cohort think it’s nothing to do with them anyways. Awful handling of the whole lot of it, and really highlights incompetence compounding infection.
