The "board" was just a collection of lads who were happy to be given a bit of a title for their voluntary work and get a few free tickets. Happy enough with their own little fiefdoms and no concept of what the role of a board member should entail

    MOD Note:
    A couple of reminders:

    - No Abuse is allowed in soccer, against anyone, the abuse rules do not only apply to football players/staff which can catch people out. Terms like conman could be viewed as abuse as it is a label on a person rather than a specific reference to soccer related actions.

    - Please remember this is the soccer forum, you are welcome to talk about actions of a football person that can be referenced or a source offered. For example what a book claims, reporter said, tv programme showed etc.

No wild speculation is acceptable where potential legal matters or a private life are concerned, no ranting about such actions without cause, no abuse.

I'm totally ignorant to corporate law and any of the penalties he could receive. But realistically, based on what we know, what is the best case/scenario that they could nail him on? And what would be the penalties he could receive?

Is jail a possibility? Like obviously I understand in other countries it would be a lot more realistic than here. But is it even a possibility here?

He has not been charged with anything so there is little point considering a penalty.

He had his and his fathers mates sitting in the right positions signing everything off, sure they never questioned anything he did. Doubt they will be able to touch him...he will always claim the board didnt stop him or approved what he suggested.

But not even specific to Delaney, just bad governance, what avenues are available when someone runs a company that receives public funding badly? Mismanages public funds etc

I know Delaney hasn't been charged, i'm asking broadly what's there?

Outside of the complete mismanagement of soccer administration in this country for the past two decades plus and the impact it will have on the next couple of decades of soccer in this country, very little will come of any of this.
Personally, if there's one thing I want to see happen out of this is more to do with the accountability of accountants, auditors and solicitors that JD doing jail time, but we have been here before with those particular professions and very very little has changed.

Fairly disappointing I felt, just Tighe talking the whole time got a bit boring

Agreed. The book is much better than what was broadcast tonight.

Wasn't the value of the tickets for football matches that politicians got through Delaney worth more then face value they paid for because they were going to him because they couldn't get the tickets in the normal way. They were worth far more then what thy cost.

The money that he paid to his ex missus looks very dubious. She said she received some of it but not what the figures were suggesting.

She said she only received 10k but the figures that were published said 95k. There was one cheque that was written to her for 25k but was lodged into Delaneys own bank account. If that money never left his account and was not paid to her, he's in big big trouble.

And that's all before we get to the clear and obvious misappropriation of funds.

Thought it was a rather poor hour long book promotion.

In usual VMTV they used their limited library of footage over and over again.

Could have been so much better but I have no doubt it was vetted by the entire VMTV legal department!!!

I liked the format, it was like a calm detached analysis, told very simply in chronological order. Like a Sunday political review show. Not the usual urgent sounding speeches by pundits shown standing in front of buildings, with jump cuts and raised voices. It doesn't need any extra drama.

Pity Dunphy wasn't on to explain his bootlicking.

Agreed it's the payment to the GF which ended up in his own account that'll hang him pretty much everything else can be explained away by saying it was approved by board etc.

There were worse bootlickers than Dunphy Giles and Houghton come to mind.

yeah it needed more contributors than just Tighe, it would have been good if they interviewed the fans who had their Delaney Out flags confiscated from them. No contribution from Shane Ross either which was lacking given he was finally the Minister who didnt listen to Delaneys excuses.

Anyone know where John Delaney Park is?

We did a lot of driving around Ireland this summer, a lot of it off main roads.
One thing I noticed was the amount of all weather and floodlit soccer facilities in out of the way places.
I assume that was Delaney keeping the grassroots sweet?

Sports capital and generally hard working individuals on the ground getting these in place far more likely.
The thing is what goes on at the top of the FAI should not impact on sports facilities. The state has an obligation to ensure local groups get funding for these facilities as they are generally of great benefit to a portion of the population.

Could this be the next FAI (IRFU) will sell all Vantage Tickets themselves???

Broadsheet.ie did a Q&A with Mark Tighe last night on Delaney and the FAI

Just finished reading the book this week; a great read.

Absolutely incredible what went on and for how long. One thing for sure is he knew how to play a room, and intimated anyone going against him with legal action (charged to FAI!).

Not going to hold my breath but do hope he is somehow found accountable for all the money he skimmed from the association! As a previous poster says, I think the only thing that could potentially legally put him in a bind is the payments “to his ex”.

    What a character!

    He's still issuing legal threats...
Former FAI boss John Delaney sues ex-girlfriend Susan Keegan for defamation
This time, I guess that it's not the FAI paying the legal team.

Think this doc will be better than the TV3 one. Richie Saddlier, Brian Kerr and Catherine Murphy TD are some of the contributors. In the ad for it Brian Kerr says that Delaney reminds him of Trump.
