Ref Flu jabs and people saying December before they can get them. I was in getting mine this morning and nurse was saying huge uptake this year for them and they are prioritizing high risk people. Lot of those high risk would normally not get it are looking for them and expecting it straight away. This surgery only gets deliveries once a week and have run out a few times already, this may be the case with other places and why the delays.
Good to see people getting it, every little helps as they say.

The flu will hopefully be a minor irritant this winter as social distancing hand sanitation proper cough etiquette and isolation with symptoms combined with a greater uptake of the flu vaccine will protect us.

This is valuable and will hopefully reduce the strain on the health service.

So, you are anti mask wearing?

I would be curious how you came to that conclusion from my comment.

You excluded the wearing of masks from your list of measures to reduce the strain on the health service

Well yes, that's kind of the point. To help combat misinformation that this is all trivial.

They're hardly going to trot out someone to say "Hey everyone I got Covid, it was super, loved it, no bother."

I do think that's a massive leap to make.

To be honest I wear a mask. I don't have faith in the average person to do so in a beneficial matter. Most seem yo treat them as chin guards or toys.

At any rate my list was steps that people will be doing that will limit the transmission of influenza making this a light flu season.

I've never researched the value of wearing masks regarding the transmission of influenza.

That's some high level mental gymnastics.

I knew well what you meant in your post.

I think people concluded at the time that he was never tested therefore he probably didn't have covid.

I've been sick with worry for Timer Leste all morning - glad to hear things are going well there
I agree there's no need for Kermit to post info that's easily available on worldometers for every country, but Timor L'este has been having about one new case every two weeks, and has 0 active cases most of the time. Unfortunately, West Timor cases are included as part of Indonesia, so it's difficult to tell how bad things are on that side, though a brief scan suggests they closed the border at the start of the outbreak - I presume it's reopened now.

The progress of a country with one land border and a population of ~1.3 million which seems to be on the line of zero covid is worth noting. Of course, they have only had 9k tests according to worldometers, so who knows...

The majority of people are not paying attention so this fear mongering is just making those already in fear even worse.

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/cavan-headed-for-covid-19-danger-zone-as-border-counties-may-face-level-4-restrictions-39613106.html
Cavan is heading for the Covid-19 danger zone and may overtake Donegal for the spread of infection amid rising concern about counties along the Border.

New fourteen day incidence figures for Covid 19 today show that the rate in Cavan has jumped to 338.7 per 100,000 in the space of a few days from 144.4 per 100,000 as the virus has rapidly taken hold in the county.

Level 3 has been in place for only 5 days and thus, given the incubation period, many of those cases probably involve infection that took place before Level 3 was brought in. So why use today's figures to justify Level 4? Why not give Level 3 a chance to work before deciding whether to go to Level 4?

True but it is little more than an inconvenience to the vast majority of people.

They had a border to close. We don't.

Re flu vaccine, I'm going to book in at my local pharmacy. Doesn't bother me to wait a month for an appointment. I suppose as long as I get it before the worst of the flu season (Dec/Jan I think?) then it'll be worth it. It's not me virtue signalling or anything, it's just a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that it would be just my luck to catch the flu and covid at the same time. I think I'd be able to cope with either of them on their own, but both at the same time? Fvck no. And I HATE hospitals. I hate jabs too. But I hate hospitals way WAY more.

So we've 420 available hospital beds as of today. Assuming we don't shut down the elective health system, that's 420 left out of approx 12,000 beds in the health system.

Given the fact that there is 220 people in hospital with covid, that means there is around 11,780 in hospital for other reasons, like heart attacks and broken legs and cancer treatment and every other ailment that exists.

How many of the available 420 beds will be taken up by every day acute ailments over the next month? How many will be genuinely available for covid admissions and when will we reach capacity if admissions continue on the same trajectory as they have over the few weeks? I think we have a month before we have to cancel "elective" procedures and about six weeks away from tents outside hospitals.

it's not doom and gloom pessimism. I just can't see how the numbers could go any other way.

Oh, I know we couldn't close our border - I didn't mean to suggest it was an exact parallel.

I agree that there hasn't been enough time given to let level 3 take effect, but the concern for border counties is the dismal situation in the North. That if the North goes into lockdown, the border counties will need to go to level 4 to prevent people border-hopping to go shopping.

It will still happen to other counties, but if there are Garda checkpoints everywhere, it'll at least slow them down and discourage them.
