I'm sure it's been answered before but it's almost impossible to use the search tool here - why aren't the case numbers NPHET release the same as the positive swabs figures? Would it not be better to just release the latter every day - why is there a backlog or things like that?

Likely verification of swabs - it's easy to count Positive totals, but to verify they're new cases takes manual digging. as case numbers go up, the backlog may increase because counting swabs is still pretty much the same amount of work, but verification takes far longer with more cases. It was a tuesday effect, but apparently it's getting so backlogged it's travelled through the week in Italy and become a Saturday effect.

    Good thread on it here:

Every item on drivetime covid related.

I think the healthiest thing any Irish man or woman could do is get on a plane and go to the Greece or Cyprus.

We need some sunshine and a break from the non stop misery. This hysteria has to STOP

Good explanation on that. Emphasises the importance of the 7 & 14 day data!

Yeah but when will the media ask all the NPHET crew how they're all keeping? So thoughtless of them.

Teachers should still be brought in.

Without pupils their is no risk of spread.

An empty school can easily accommodate them all.

Genuinely curious as to why you think teachers should still be brought in.

Italy climbing another 1,000 cases with 5,372. Jaysus after getting hit so hard, all the theories of t-cell immunity, 20% herd immunity, etc, just seem to be evaporating and hard to find positivity in it all. Might be time for an evening off social media.

With 20% herd immunity that leaves 48 million people. 48 ****en million people and you think a 5000 cases means no immunity. That's is one pessimistic attitude to have.

    Or turn off the radio.

    This.

And maybe get off the Covid threads on boards and twitter and Sky news and whatever else.

My elderly Ma was giving off to me during the week about the anxiety around and the frustration and everything else. I said to her, 'look, everyone is under pressure with this damn thing to some extent, turn off Liveline, watch only the evening news and otherwise listen to music or watch an old film.' I have her all set up to watch the Wexford opera festival online this weekend and she can't wait.

Whatever stress we feel about this thing is at least 50% self-inflicted.

Some decent posts here from people that take the time to give genuine information and informed opinion. Unfortunately those willing to post sarcasm and smart arse comments outnumber them considerably . You have to wade through alot of crap to read decent info.

Bergamo is the one to keep an eye on in Italy for signs of herd immunity. Not Italy as a whole.

Don’t panic, control what you can, protect what’s important to you, and don’t worry. Worrying won’t change this, action will. Take care of yourself and that in turn will take care of others.

Czech rep has higher number in icu per capita now at the beginning of their outbreak than we did at our highest in April. Definitely not a situation to be looked at as positive at the moment

Paschal Donohoe says the Government is now expecting to run a deficit this year of €21 billion, and - if no policy changes were introduced in the Budget next week - of €14.5 billion in 2021.
Well at least the budget deficit isnt as bad as first feared.

Insane numbers in Northern Ireland and I don't get it. Belfast has always felt like a ghost town to me compared to Dublin. No real density, very spread out. Are they all having house parties too?

Watched a snippet of Nolan Live, seems there's a % attitude of I won't be told by the Executive (masks, distancing etc).
