How can they be recommending level 5 a few days ago and not now?

    I'm confused.

Covid has a natural R rate of about 2.5, if no precautions are taken. And of course, that means schools are open, as are pubs, nightclubs, concerts, festivals, sports matches etc etc.

Two thirds of the working population are WFH. Public transport is fairly deserted. People are wearing masks indoors most of the time, and at least attempting social distancing if they are not wearing a mask. Gyms are closed. Hardly anyone is flying on airplanes.

So how are we in a situation where someone who gets infected with covid goes on to infect between 1 and 2 more people? I know some people will say "it's the schools, it has to be!", and I admit there is a certain logic to that. But if it was the schools that were fueling this, would we see a massive increase in percentage of infections being in the 0-14 category? It's not like they're not being tested - primary school children have been to testing centres in their droves since school reopened and the usual slew of back-to-school lurgy began.

I had really thought that 80/90% of people wearing masks and practicing social distancing indoors, along with having 2/3 of the working population stay at home and off public transport would have a much bigger impact on the R number than it has.

i mean, if it's not the schools, how the f*ck is thing still transmitting so efficiently?? And if it is the schools, why is the 0-14 age category still only making up 10% of positive cases, which is the same percentage of positive cases during the summer?

i have to admit. I'm flummoxed.

    Masks. :)

Government are committed to Level 3 for 3 weeks currently, so there was no point.

I gave up counting any backlog weeks ago. I know others have been and I think there's still a large discrepancy in the last week or so.

The only number I'm really going to be looking at today is the Dublin number. We know the rest of Ireland number is likely to keep increasing for at least a week while we wait for phase 3 restrictions to kick in. Donegal is a strange case, very closely tied to NI where clearly that government has lost control.

Italy climbing another 1,000 cases with 5,372. Jaysus after getting hit so hard, all the theories of t-cell immunity, 20% herd immunity, etc, just seem to be evaporating and hard to find positivity in it all. Might be time for an evening off social media.

Large parts of Italy were hit with lower case rates than us in spring

Every item on drivetime covid related.

I think the healthiest thing any Irish man or woman could do is get on a plane and go to the Greece or Cyprus.

We need some sunshine and a break from the non stop misery. This hysteria has to STOP

Public transport is not deserted. Buses and the Luas are at allowed capacity peak times, and unfortunately a lot of people are doing the mask under the nose/chin routine. Some routes are worse than others. When I get an x home from work it is nearly 100% compliance (with the exception of one or two people who have never complied with the rules). On the normal route home often only one or two people keep their masks on for the whole journey.

Also gyms and pools are still open, and obviously people can't mask while exercising.

Levels of compliance with social distancing differs depending on where you are. I work near town and no one in the spar across the road from my work masks or distances correctly. Even the staff wear the mask under their noses

Added to that people are still making house calls, meeting up with friends and I'm not surprised levels are as high as they are.
“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

Probably due to a combination of things that weren't happening in May/June: schools, pubs, GAA matches, even religious services...

In response to whether the Government should go further, 54 per cent of people said last week that more restrictions should be introduced, compared with 27 per cent who said they should not.

I'm sure it's been answered before but it's almost impossible to use the search tool here - why aren't the case numbers NPHET release the same as the positive swabs figures? Would it not be better to just release the latter every day - why is there a backlog or things like that?

Nobody knows, everything has been theorised from reswabs to false positives to time from swab to results........ There doesn't seem to be a solid answer

    I'm working off 2 assumptions.

    1. Some people are tested multiple times so could be multiple positive swabs but 1 case
    2. For clusters, they might be getting tallied in the positive swab count but not getting reported in the overall total until the full extent within the cluster is known

10 degrees down here too, but no wind. As somebody suggested, good whiskey and the book. Great recipe how to warm up.

Teachers should still be brought in.

Without pupils their is no risk of spread.

An empty school can easily accommodate them all.

Why ??? my home broadband is far superior to that in my school. Perhaps we could have a more nuanced response where those who can wfh do so and those who can’t use school resources ?

or is it pure narrow minded spite that seems to invade any discussion on teachers and schools ?
