The alternative has been spoken about for over six months now; encourage the vulnerable to restrict themselves.

If they introduce level 5 people will take to the streets and I don't mean the usual nutjobs.

Encourage the vulnerable to restrict themselves. How do they get food? If they need assistance with day to day living how do they get that? Etc? The people they come into contact with must retrict themselves and so must the people they come into contact with. Or, do what was asked whilst bearing in mind that your behaviour can have a devastating knock on effect on someone down the line, which we are seeing now with the nursing home outbreaks.

Let's face it for once and for all.

There will have to be short sharp shocks until a vaccine.

Tony the bone is not running the country though, he thinks he is in fairness but he is not. No other country in Europe has gone into full lockdown with worse numbers than us. What do they know that we don't.

We have poorer health service, I thouht by now it was pretty clear that that was the exact reason why we are jumping for lockdown a bit faster than in Europe. In addition to that a bit of a public/media/government obsession with covid that seems a bit more ingrained in Ireland than in most other countries

    Whose. Fault... Is... that?

the governments of the last 40 years, the capacity of the health service was massively denuded in the 80s recession (with a population of about 3.5m) and it's never been recovered. We spend a vast amount of money on nothing that has a material effect on the public when they actually need a hospital bed or significant medical intervention.

We. Do. Not. Have. The. Capacity. Or. Resources. To. Deal. With. The. Numbers.

The plan of the anti restrictions is to just not to deal with it at all and pretend its not there.

Someone needs to ask Ronan Glynn why he didn't recommend moving any county to Level 3 last week, and what has changed since then other than Tony Holohan coming back.

If it's not saliva gone the wrong way (which I guess it is) he'll be for testing ASAP.

This is the highest daily increase in cases since the end of April
It seems to take about 10 days to 2 weeks for restrictions to start levelling the curve - we should expect numbers to rise during that time. It's like trying to turn a large ship.

I think that's been happening since March and April, all other services are curtailed to make way for the Virus.
Also nothing improved during the first lockdown..

They were curtailed. They'd just started resuming and now they'll be curtailed again because demands from treating people with the virus will be higher. Not to mention the risk of people requiring hospital treatment being at high risk to this disease being infected. These would include people who in the ordinary course of their lives it may be their only 6 weeks in hospital for decades for a very treatable condition e.g. pancreatitis but during the course of that illness their risk of severe illness from COVID is considerably higher.

I think level 3 will stabilise our cases to 500 per day by late October.

Is that good enough to protect hospitals and ICU???

He explained it very well. He explained how NPHET hadn't thought through what they were proposing and the fact that they had moved their position so extremely in 3 days. They didn't have a course of action to recommend if the "circuit breaker" failed.

I've seen a lot of **** written in the last couple of days about Leo said. Both misrepresenting what he said and claiming he didn't explain the decision making process.

Criticise the guy all you like but at least base it in some sort of reality.

Finally some sense... also the fact Pascal donoghue said " we might not be able to borrow at 0-1% interest from the ECB as we would be the only country in national lockdown in europe".

What do people propose ireland do with over 400,000 unemployed? When clearly the economy cant afford another PUP payment with borrowing.

Unfortunately and it will hurt people to hear this but covid is not the only show in town there has to be a balancing act.

Level 3 buys the goverment time of a week or 2 to get finances somewhat balanced before level 5 ( and that in my humble opinion will be what happens).

Tony Holohan being as professional and level-headed as always.

Absolutely clear from what they've all said that level 3 is not going to work.

As was said around the time schools opened up. Should a vulnerable parent have to just abandon their schoolgoing child in order to restrict themselves?

Its a joke but keeps getting parroted out even though its more holes than swiss cheese.

We spend a vast amount of money on nothing that has a material effect on the public when they actually need a hospital bed or significant medical intervention.

We have the same spent per capita as the likes of Germany.

But they use a mix of public and private hospitals.

Merely 28% of the roughly 1,950 hospitals that participate in Germany’s universal health system are owned by the government. 37% are private for profit hospitals that treat patients covered by the public health insurances and receive the same amount of reimbursement per case as the public ones or the 34% that are operated by churches and other charities

But we can't do that. Its privatisation!

But no doubt all our TDs can go private if needed.
