So we haven't even seen the recent surge in cases affect hospital figures yet and you can see there isn't much wiggle room.

we will almost certainly reach normal capacity in two or three weeks no matter what restrictions are put into place tonight. then we are into hospital surge plans and crossing fingers no other emergency happens.

The 5 stage plan isn't fit for purpose. The main goal is protecting life, jobs and businesses.
The problem I have with it is, there is little difference between 4 and 5 in terms of the economy, all non-essential business is shut in both. So IMO level 3 does not go far enough in terms of non-economic restrictions, before we have to press the nuclear button for 4 and 5.

Level 3 puts so many people out of work. Im out of work again, after being out of work for 6 months already. Now im supposed to live on 300 euro. How can we live like this?

Why is Dublin levelling off if it's schools? That makes zero sense. Are schools in Dublin different?

there's a thread on here about Covid in schools, have a gander because the people on it are parents and it seems like there's a lot going on that's not been reported.

If the schools close, this would be a disaster, they were Leo's words.
This may be why it's been hushed up

I see thousands of bozos are organizing a "No Mask" march in Grafton Street at the weekend.
Seriously? These idiots should be up for manslaughter for superspreading the virus.

Needs to be immediately banned from going ahead and if it still does then harsh penalties should be imposed on these fcukwits.

My sister is in school today. She told her year head she was feeling sick and wanted to go home. She is displaying some symptoms. (So am I since this morning- hoping to get tested soon). The year head rang my mother and said "I don't want kids missing too much school, so I'd prefer to keep her in for her next two classes - English and Maths. She can go home after that because it's only religion, but she should come back in to school in the afternoon because she has biology class.

    Unbelievable

He didn't overstep any mark for gods sake, they made a recommendation, which is their purpose.

They made a recommendation that contradicted one from only 72 hours previously with no change in underlying trends in the intervening time, apart from the usual low discharge numbers over the weekend. They may as well have said "Tony felt it in his waters" as opposed to the letter that was sent

OK but you are wrong yourself when you stated that no matches can go ahead at level 3 even behind closed doors. Clearly they can.

Could anyone blame Doctor Martin Feeley if he called for the resignations of the HSE members of NPHET? Doctor Martin Feeley was forced to resign for speaking contrary to the HSE. Therefore, without hesitation, the HSE should be requesting the resignation of those members of NPHET employed by the HSE, for going against the HSE. Once Paul Reid denied what they said, they should have been gone. The same standards should apply to all.

Therefore, without hesitation we the people should be requesting the resignation of the members of the previous government who blindly followed the advice of Nphet back in March.

I'm sorry to hear that but my point was Level 3 should have heavy enforcement. You heard Leo last night, he doesn't we can afford another lockdown, its not under consideration. Level 4 dumps the entire retail, construction, beauty and other non essential industries on PUP. We have to do everything to avoid it.

Unless you live in a cave I don't need to.

Name a European country with harsher restrictions?

    24 in ICU

Not much change since yesterday so far which is good.

I know this is going to come across as here say but I have a friend who works as an ICU nurse and according to him, some hospitals are putting patients into ICU beds not necessarily because they need ICU beds but to keep them away from the general ward beds as that would mean having to close off an entire ward.

I'm actually surprised we haven't had a few resignations this morning.

Maybe NPHET itself was split on the letter?

They are not hiding cases. If that is the implication. The numbers in Dublin and around counties are published daily.

Whatever is going on the schools are open all over the country. If schools were the driver all counties would be experiencing the same growth but it's not the case. Dublin has completely levelled off so schools are not driving growth there. Schools are an easy target unfortunately.

Why did the upswing in cases start in early August?

How many times have well paid senior civil servants ever resigned?

It sounds like the NPHET wasn't surprised by the outcome or Varadkar's attack on them.

Eamon Ryan has described the meeting yesterday as involving "robust" discussion between Varadkar and the NPHET.

Which is political speak for a lot of tense questions and raised voices.

Thinking you’re doing your best for society by demanding low risk population be locked up is misguided.
It's the best strategy until we know enough about the virus to be able to manage things successfully.

there is no pan-european response/plan/strategy though so no idea how the EU could turn off the money tap for a country doing what they felt was best. a bit disingenuous from the government there.

What's that got to do with the question repeatedly asked to the poster I quoted? Ireland has the harshest restrictions not just in Europe but the whole world, as we have all summer!

Yes senior teams as in the age group not senior level.

So for example adult junior G championship games could be played until GAA made their decision to halt all games.

    Look at the death rate.

Tiny compared to the first wave. Let's hope it last.

Surely government needs to be borrowing now in case it ever needs to happen so?
