And of course level 5 sounds ok in theory

But in practice with regulated social outlets closed people are going to socialize in an unregulated dangerous fashion

Mary Lou pretty much said on Newstalk this morning that she would not have gone to Level 5 either

That's a surprise, because David Cunnane hadn't a clue what SF thinking was on the matter last night.

What do people think is going to happen?
NPHET didn’t make the recommendation for the craic.

Hospitals will be the first casualty. We are in exponential growth again. Doesn’t take long for services to clog up.

We'll rue the day we allowed Varadkar's father into our country.

    Wow

SF govt in the North has only implemented a Level 3 equivalent in one area. They have 3 times the problem we have at the moment.

That's a cop out answer - we all have visibility of the trends.
If you're not going to give your own stance then you can't bash the government.

That's great that some people can feel happy about him venting on TV.

What other positive effects will that interview have for anyone other than Leo Varadkar, to counterbalance all the negatives it will bring?
Why are you riding to the rescue of a huge group of people you don't know. This is what he does sometimes. It did come out of the blue, it did seem like there was not a lot of thought to it and it's perfectly true they will remain gainfully employed. If Leo offends you so much stay away from his comments, you know they are coming.

The dogs on the street know the Government are in a no win situation..

With no notice, take the medical advice and go straight to Level 5 lockdown. Sit back and watch the business sector crash and burn. Not to mention the Living with Covid plan going up in flames overnight..

Or... ignore the medical advice, roll the dice, and try to supress the virus with a nationwide Level 3 directive, and hope to God the body count doesn't spiral out of control... All deaths recorded from this point will soley be placed on the heads of the Government, and those that chose to not heed NPHET recommendations.

Unbias punters will realise that NPHET only advise the Government, they have no other fiddle to play except for what.s best for the health and saftey of all Irelands citizens - That's their job.

The Politicians have to balance that information with the running of the country, namely the economy.

Regardless what anybody thinks, or what your Political leanings are, or where you stand on the events of the last 48hrs..

Make no mistake, this is a no win situation for all the suits in the big smoke. I would'nt want to be in their position, knowing the flak they are going to take.

I'm not sure what you're addressing here, sorry. To whom am I riding to the rescue of?

If this was a talking head on television then that would be understandable. This is one of the leaders of the Irish government on television undermining the public health authority at the same time as the rest of the government is trying to impress the importance of social cohesion on the population.

All of this is in the "may" category. They made a different recommendation on Thursday, also not for the craic. From a government perspective jumping from Level 2/3 to 5 is not living with the virus. It seems ridiculously rushed with a very narrow aim. Levels 4 & 5 may indeed come but with advance warning.

    Really? Ok, that's interesting.

Same right now on RTÉ. Not ready to move to level 5 but gets the boot on PUP and payment breaks.

You're defending NPHET and they are not an authority, they advise. You really are putting far too much thought into this. This was rushed, he said so in his usual way and we move on to Level 3.

All of the country being level 3 is hardly living with the virus.

    I think you're misunderstanding.

I am not defending NPHET. I'm neutral on their advice; they're just doing their job. The government's job is to take that information and set out policy. Agree or disagree with what policies the government set out, I don't have a problem with them doing their job as best as they can.

Leo Varadkar is on television trashing NPHET; not explaining the government's rationale for their decision, but painting NPHET as callous elites. It was completely unnecessary and deleterious, aside from apparently giving people a fuzzy feeling about somebody speaking frankly,

Hospitality is pretty much shut but other services and retail are pretty much open. The key risk right now remains in people’s homes and enforcement in this area needs to be looked at.

It's the best we can do, look around Europe, every country is struggling to find a balance.

    So, what happens now ?

Would it have been better to try the short, sharp shock of Level 5 for 4 weeks or moving to Level 3 now and then inevitably Level 4 and potentially reaching Level 5 anyway in a longer drawn out way ?

    I don't know.

Just heard Martin Shanahan from the great restaurant Fishy Fishy on Newstalk saying that they may as well have tried the Level 5 for all the difference it will make to his business of we are all meant to be in this together. He doesn't anticipate opening over this Winter.

Holy Shít. Varadkar not only fúcked our national emergency health team under a bus during a once in a generation pandemic, he reversed over them, got out and machine gunned the corpses.

It's a bookmark moment, one a normal politician would instantly regret and one the entire government will have to clean up after in the coming days and weeks.

Of course among all this pantomime the virus is getting into the large numbers of inevitable exponential growth. Even if level 3 slows down the rate of growth it will take weeks to kick in, whatever happens we are looking at 1000s of case a day by the end of next month.

In all likely-hood we have lost the schools and large swathes of our health system probably for all of December and most if not all of January.

The science of course has been buried in all the politics.

But just to recap what was in the letter.
If current trends continue, it said 1,600 to 2,300 cases per day will be being reported per day by 7 November, with 43 people per day being admitted to hospital

NPHET advises that it is vital to do everything in our power now to arrest the current trajectory nationally and suppress the virus back down to a low level of transmission in advance of the winter months

The next NPHET briefing if there is one will have a bigger audience than Italia '90.

A major risk lately must have been the celebrations taking place after sports events.
