NPHET repeatedly failed to hit testing and contact tracing targets, which they set themselves. They failed to present simple, consistent messaging and lost the general public as a result. We've already paid the price for their failures.
How can they unless legislation demands that close contacts turn up for testing?
An awful lot of no shows.

This is pretty much it in a nutshell. NPHET, dept of health and HSE took the summer off patting themselves on the back. They’ve let the country down badly.

Brother said 13 Medical students in his course in NUIG have tested positive today, all in same class. Testing centre being set up for students in NUIG as well. Can't see anything more than online college classes going ahead nationwide beyond next week.

That wasn't a sly dig. I don't expect you to see a wider picture when you're focused on such a microcosm of issues. You don't seem to see the wider picture at all because if you did, you wouldn't be so hung up on Ireland's hospitality sector when something at the scale of a global pandemic is happening around you.

I used hosptiality as an example as it was a reply to another poster. 1 example I was able to use, especially when family members could lose their house over this, so forgive me for having an interest in their life and job.

Many other areas of business and economy we can discuss if you wish. More than welcome any discussion.

It's some of the population letting the country down.

Here an example if why it's spreading. There's an arsehole in town who was referred for a test on Wednesday because he had a cough and feeling unwell ( he has his dole drank at this stage). He hasnt gone yet nor will he. He has been refused entry to all the pubs in town so he dodges over to the supermarket for a carry out. You guessed it no mask either and he attended a funeral on Friday just for good measure. We have no fking chance.

Why is it always poor people on the dole that are to blame?

I think your detailed hypothesis says a lot more about your own personal prejudices than your knowledge of how respiratory pathogens spread.

Calls to ban unsafe visors by Dublin GP .
    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/1004/1169331-coronavirus-protection-visors/

Hard to argue with that. Either redesign them or ban outright. Top many businesses including major universities relying on unsafe PPE.

I can't for the life of me understand how in person lectures are going ahead. Most lecture halls I've been in don't even have windows. These cases may have arisen in a different scenario but online learning should be the norm for the foreseeable.

Labs should only be conducted with small numbers, they could easily run extra ones so people aren't all in the same one.

Methinks any public relations company worth their salt should have used the act of rumour spreading as an analogy to demonstrate the harm that having an unnecessarily high number of social contacts can do.

"Gossip won't Stop It" perhaps ???

The HSE are in charge is testing and tracing. Not sure why you blame NPHET for HSE failings.
Simple, consistent messaging, it's been pretty much the same, wash hands, keep physical distancing and reduce social contacts. I'd say the failings on messaging would be down to Michael Martin and Stephen Donnelly.... Which have been painfully silent lately... Probably for the best.

Did the brother happen to mention if any of those who tested positive are actually sick?

The majority of countries in the world are struggling with this. Are they all incompetent?

Other countries are not putting their whole country on level 3 when in some counties there are just 1 case in hospital or none. The U’K.’s version of increased restrictions are pubs closing at 10pm and the rule of 6. They are more targeted measure for areas where cases are higher.
Thousands of people & businesses will be closed with the stroke of a pen by an unelected body of doctors with just Covid control in their minds. I’m of the viewpoint Dr Holohan has more extreme views as Dr Glynn and would love to head for zero Covid at any cost. He seems unconcerned with the consequences & had to be overruled by the previous government to reopen in July.

They are going ahead in a very limited capacity, it is still very much online centred and focused, I just graduated but I know in the year below me in UCD they are doing in person studio tutorials once per week I think. Tbh I'm not quite sure the real life tutorials had ever officially been trialled yet but obviously this looks to be all completely out the window now more than likely

People aren't showing up for covid tests after being contacted by tracers. I make that an arrestable offence and a huge fine and I go as far as house arrest.

Hospitality is the collateral damage in this pandemic and has been from the start. Fact of life in health pandemic of this scale. All a government can really do is give them supports when their closed.
