335d service history checked out, our usual indie said it's good from what he saw on the stored service history etc, cash ordered from the bank, insurance quote got (1054 euro so very happy with that) and previous insurer has my proof of no claims in the post since yesterday evening.

Organised to meet seller at the weekend...

I know I could just ask him but these are xenons right? and if they are adaptive as the ad says it's a good chance they'd be specced alongside high beam assist? Didn't realise it but that was an option on F30 where they do that moving around to block high beams while following cars etc.. Not a deal breaker just would be a nice to have. Wouldn't be arsed with the auto dipping version but the moving around lights would be nice

Nice one. The moving around version I would imagine are very rare. They might have the auto dip or could just be normal xenon lights.

You could ask seller for the last 7 digits of the vin, and from that you can get the full spec as it left the factory online.

    Congratulations!

If it has the washer system then they are xenons. Xenons also don't have a manual headlight adjustment button/dial on the dashboard as xenon lights have auto adjustment. If it's the LCI model then it will have LED headlights.

If you can get the car's VIN then stick it in here and it will tell you everything it left the factory with:

    Great stuff.
You run cartell or one of those?

A small one but double check the vin against the logbook.

    He doing VRT, I assume?

If you're doing the VRT you need the V5 (uk logbook). Without this you've a world of hurt.

This thread explains the different headlight options on the F30.

Did a check and all clear, will definitely check vin against the car. He has the V5 and I'm going to VRT it, going to doubly triple check the vin against the V5 and put the vin in on motorcheck website when I'm there to make sure they all match up.
I'll have a piece of paper that says the car came off a transporter into Ireland very recently... it's the only weird bit of the situation but everything else seems fine and I'll just make the decision when I see it if there's anything funny about it but ok with that angle of it now after speaking with him.

I think with the extras the VRT might be a bit higher than the guess on the VRT calculator (in the region of 4100+nox)? Having said that I'd be looking to bring in an identical spec car from the UK so I would be paying it anyway on another car...

Thanks, this one is pre lci and has xenons, checked the spec list with the last 7 of the vin and am happy it's got good enough lights for me :D I'm sure the led are good too but glad it's the xenons, have used them on a 645 a load of times and highly rate them. Do a lot of night driving so it's a big plus for me on the car

What year is the car. Vrt on extras is zero after 4 years. They apply the vrt rate of the car to the extras if the car is less than a year old. Then it reduces by 25% to zero over 4 years.

So of the car is three years old....you pay 25% of the vrt rate on the extras. So 10k extras becomes 2.5k extra on the omsp which they apply the vrt to.

nice, its a 2014 so I don't have to worry about that

I'd be a bit harder on him here so.

He's not doing things properly and you're taking all the risk.
If (and it's a small if) this goes tits up are you left with a car that you've to sell in the north?

Along with proof of transporter you also need an invoice.
Which I assume is generally a UK invoice.

Why can't he VRT it and you pay for it?

Also it's due an NCT straight away if it's over 4 years old.

I think hand written invoice should be ok?

I know what you mean about it all, haven't asked him why he can't vrt it but as long as nothing bad will happen to me doing it I'm all set to do it this way anyway, I'll vrt it and book it in for nct.

As long as I don't have any risk of getting stuck not able to register it I'm ok with it, I'll be doing everything legit once I own it so as long as I can book for VRT with whatever paperwork he has itll be grand I hope.

tell me if I'm being too trusting / naive but just want to buy the car this weekend and be done with it, have been searching for months and this fits the description

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,714 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

I can take a very good guess why he's not doing the VRT.
Once he does 4 or 5 a year revenue will be on to him.

As above this should go fine.
But if it doesn't you'll be trying to sell on UsedcarsNI and trying to explain why you're over a barrel.

It's probably done by people buying off lads like this all the time with no issues. But it ain't by the book

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,922 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Should be ok but what if that car was in for vrt before and didnt get done and now has a crazy late fee against it?
One a transport company had a truck on the ferry, they appear to be able to issue dockets like confetti re what they were carrying so i wouldnt put all my faith in the transport docket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,678 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

is there a way to check if it's already been booked for VRT and would get late fees? Could I try fill in the vrt application right before I buy it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

You won't get hit with fees, you can prove you just bought it. The last car I vrtd I bought in the north, no transporter or ferry. I did have a handwritten note from the seller saying he sold it to me on such a date but anyone could have written that and I don't think they even looked at it. All will be well, don't let worrying these things take away from picking up your new rocket!

At the moment with Covid19 they aren't checking dates of entry for UK cars as vigorously as they normally would. When I vrt'd my F31 a couple of weeks back the guy mentioned that....i had been riding around on UK plates for two months...

Yes I'm well aware what the pack is and what you get. But for over 5k for 20 extra horses and a nicer sounding exhaust I'd have to be mad! I'll keep it stock anyway until warranty expires before I even think of remaps.

The 340i touring is a cracker too, have you had it long?

Into month 3 now with it, absolute beauty of a car and I cant believe these aren't more popular here!

Its not 5k for the MPPSK pack, its 2k approx, 40 horses more plus the MPerformance valved exhaust. All warrantied for that which is worth it. You can also maintain the AUS warranty for ever more too with it.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Yeah they are a rare car alright. Best of luck with it.

It's over 5k for the MPPSK for the G30 540i.Plus it's only a 20hp boost from 340-360. Maybe it's different with the 340i/440i but that's what it is for mine sure I contacted 4 dealers about it! A complete rip off imo. Over in the UK they get it for half that.

Arsehole. Had that happen me years ago, very frustrating. Drove an hour to view the car and they didn't turn up or answer the phone, was fit to be tied.

Yep very frustrating. Said he saw the price of similar in the UK had gone up in price, asked for some more time to think about it and now 3 hours later isn't answering call/text.

Waste of a rare weekend I have fully off from work

The plot thickens hes said to come up and get it. Either reading this thread and winding me up or actually wants to sell... time will tell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,714 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

    Annoying
    Hope it all works out.

Make sure you check VIN against logbook.
A good friend got done when a nice A4 was cloned off an identical one in a main dealers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭James Bond Junior

There's something fishy going on there. Proceed with caution. Triple check the vin against the one on the door jam and under the windscreen. If it's printed on the windows check those too. I'm not sure are these things still on windows nowadays?
