What sticks out to me is that no one has been able to work out how to deal with Trump. It appears that he turned the level up to 11 last night, but it shouldn't be a surprise. It is what Trump always does. He couldn't debate the actual issues, 200k+ dead, infection rates rising in 23 states, the economy in the crapper, him paying no taxes, Californian wildfires which he has paid no attention etc etc, so it was always going to be that he was going to come out shouting and trying to bully.

Yet Biden seem genuinely surprised and was definitely on the back foot for at leas the 1st 15 minutes.

SUrely somebody was gaming that exact scenario and can come up with a better strategy than simply letting him do it?

plus more weird arm jerking from trump last night. perhaps the two are connected?

"See, see that there, that is what I'm paying you for"

Melania, "that'll be a nope from me" I'm more Android then you.

Debate went as expected. Biden did pretty well, no brain freezes and discussed plans and policies well.

Trump on the otherhand tried to drag it into the gutter. And all the public will remember is it was chaotic which probably works for him.

Biden by far the better candidate.

How do you stop him without it simply devolving into a full blown shouting match though?

On some levels letting him rant and babble was probably a better strategy for Biden than getting dragged into the Mud. Trump did more damage to himself among the voters he really needs to win over.

As a Moderator Wallace should have been the one to cut Trump off - Certainly for the next debates (If Trump turns up when he sees the fall-out from this one) the Moderator should have a microphone mute button for both candidates and maybe even a visible count-down clock for the speaking time allocations.

your right there Biden is suited to being a candidate .,
he was a candidate in 1988 and 2008 and lost both times, looking to make it a third.

Trump has moved on from being a candidate, he is the better President

    Fact check on debate.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/29/politics/fact-check-biden-trump-first-presidential-debate/index.html

Pity the fact checking isn't in real time, too many lies get unquestioned and accepted as true by those watching the debate.

I would say Trump must have hated not have an audience there but Biden loved it. I am only watching it now but Biden is so much better Trump just moans and crys about everything.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

These conversations you keep imagining.... Do you imagine these people being with you in the room, and do they ever speak directly to you?

Maybe being on the receiving end of their behaviour might make one feel that that they are less ideological and just as thuggish and violent as their right wing buddies.

And yet it would not make them an organised group with a set leadership structure and directions from the top, which is what we were actually discussing.

And yet as President, we are still none the wiser as to what his actual policies are, except of course that he thinks it perfectly fine for there to be right-wing terrorist groups to defend the country from the left.

What is Trumps platform for the net 4 years?

What is he going to do about climate change?
About the falling infrastructure (which you may recall was a disaster back in 2016 but he did nothing about in the last 4 years so must now be even worse)
What is his policy in regards to returning jobs to America?
What is his policy if a vaccine doesn't come through in the next few months? Does he have a Plan B?

We've got Trump supporters in here swearing blind he never said it at all, it's a fake news stitch up, etc......and then you have Trump himself saying he was just being "sarcastic".

Not having an audience definitely hurt Donald

Joe biden being told to laugh every time donald insulted him just got sadder and sadder as the debate went on.

The usual issue with biden and numbers, claiming 200 million dead under trumps watch, corrected himself a few times though.

An absolute dumpster fire of a debate.

Donalds tactic of interrupting to confuse biden definitely worked, Biden had a few senior moments with numbers, mixing up the parties etc..

Overall Donald came out stronger in that debate, but in a school bully kind of way, a rather low brow childish way.

Biden definitely came off weaker and was definitely showing his age but was more dignified in how he handled himself and tried his best to avoid stooping as low.

The real losers last night were the American public and the poor moderator. But in the frame of that debate im going to give the win to Donald trump, but barely, It just emboldened the toxic elements of his base , not persuaded moderates to vote for him (which is the idea) , but I cant see biden gaining from it either, I think itll make more people stay at home which benefits trump

As an American living and working in Dublin i can only say that "debate" was an embarrassment to everything i hold dear and strive for my nation to be.

An absolute mess from both candidates and i don't hold out much hope for my country no matter which way the election swings in a few weeks time.

Yes they are constantly having to pivot as he lies so much. He ties himself up in knots and then they end up the same way.

He was deadly serious when he said that. No joking, no sarcasm, not even a smile. He called himself smart for suggesting it. He's a buffoon.

thats ok . everyone entitled to an opinion.

Welcome to a country that had
A Taoiseach (Leo) for 3 years that was never mandated by a popular vote , he just assumed the seat after the other guy moved on
A country that had no government for 3-4 months during a global pandemic.
A country whos current leader was instrumental in a 40 billion euro collpase of the the countrys finance and taxpayers continue to pay off that debt
A country and a cabinet where the party who won the popular vote, won the highest % first preference has no representation at cabinet.

Yep that's what I thought watching it live.
But then people said he didn't say it.
Now he is saying he did and he was being sarcastic.

If he gets four more years America is some crazy place :pac:

So you’re left wing in Ireland and right wing in the US?
