102 in hospital and 16 in ICU according to tonights HSE update.

Last night I expected to see it hit over 100 yet it was 88 so increase of 14 in 24hrs.

    Decrease of 1 in ICU.

Mater & Beaumont appear to be the ones mainly behind that rise. Accounting for 8 between them. Tallaght with +3.

Yes the numbers are rising, but some perspective is always needed. 16 people in ICU out of a population of nearly 5m. Also we don't know the background of these cases and whether they have other health conditions.
As nphet loose sight of how bad this virus is for the vast majority I fear they will push for country wide level 3 and 4 in higher counties very soon.

They're not really, they're trying to do their job in protecting all citizens, and no, folks like ourselves, on the internets, wouldn't do a better job

NCTS have updated their site but I’m still left wondering if I would be turned back if stopped at a checkpoint as I’m travelling to letterkenny test centre from another county.
COVID 19 Update: All centres in Dublin and Donegal are fully operational and customers should attend for their scheduled appointment as arranged. Those who are more vulnerable or those affected by the travel restrictions in Dublin and Donegal are advised to contact the NCTS on 01 4135992 (Monday to Friday) to arrange an alternative appointment, free of any cancellation/rearrangement fees.

Letterkenny is not my nearest test centre but when I made the booking in August it was either this Saturday in letterkenny or January 2021 in my nearest centre. My nct expired last week after being extended from May. I doubt there’s any dates left in January now aswell.

Interesting article on how the virus appears to be mutating and becoming more contagious, according to studies in the U.S.

Have seen that a few days back, might explain why measures like social distancing arent as effective.

Just curious how long does a virus keep it's novel tag?
Is this still a novel coronavirus?

It seems to be losing its intensity here, but that could just be my perception

That's a lovely reassuring message I'll pass it on to the doctor's and nurses who are freaking out. All we need is perspective and we'll be grand.
According to the HSE’s chief clinical officer Dr Colm Henry speaking this morning, there are currently 278 ICU beds in the Republic.

n a letter to then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, a group of critical care specialists urged the Government to rapidly increase ICU capacity as other urgent healthcare services would need to resume despite the pandemic.
“Our pre-pandemic intensive care unit occupancy of 88 per cent nationally and over 96 per cent in major units is well above the international recommended rate of 75 per cent.”

    https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/covid-19-what-is-the-current-situation-with-icu-beds-1018659.html

Now for a bit of perspective. What does that look like? If we run them at 88% capacity it doesn't leave a whole load of room for new patients infected with a novel virus. That would leave us with 33 spare beds @88% capacity and if we run them at 96 % capacity that would leave 11 beds free.

So 16 is a super small number.
Dividing it by our population makes it even smaller.
But it doesn't change the problem.

It’s hard to know, the rates are so low here, due to the measures taken. It’s still rampaging through the U.S. so they have more opportunity to conduct large scale sampling.

As if there are not already enough "issues" with contact tracing.

The Health Service Executive has warned that contact tracers are receiving a "hostile" reception from some people deemed close contacts of a positive case of Covid-19.

Weren't some of these just added? You'd wonder how useful green list is if countries are being added and removed so frequently https://twitter.com/gavreilly/status/1309390736043970560?s=19

That is not good. But is some of the hostility because individuals have been told by an infected person that they are a close contact and they only get the call from the contact tracers 4/5 days later? Maybe frustration rather than hostility.

Well I think it will remain a very novel virus when it cannot infect people at Communion ceremonies brought forward to avoid a lock down.

The general population is being punished for a badly run health service. Closing down businesses who were adhering to guidelines and with no known link to breakouts is a cop out. Do the same doctors and nurses freak out when they pass people smoking on the street or chomping down fast food.

This virus is highlighting our health care systems issues, sadly there will probably be little change after the fact, running health care systems is far from easy, I'd imagine most countries struggle with it. I do know some health care workers that are bothered by those you mentioned, but shur they can't help everyone

You might want to take a step back and reflect on why we are being "punished". Something to do with a virus which can do as it pleases, I believe.

Why would people be frustrated in that case? Would be worse if infected person hadn't informed them!

Poland went to 25.6 and was chucked out.

Seriously? How lazy are these people in charge of it. No other country would throw a country out of their greenlist for exceeding it's made up number by 0.6, what a shower we have in charge.

Because they are extremely anxious and I understand they cannot (unless they have symptoms) get a test until they get that call. Sitting beside a phone for 5 days waiting to find out if you have a “Killer” virus, not knowing if your kids should go to school and whether you should take leave from work would in my opinion be quite frustrating.

Even if we had the most exemplary health service in the world this is a highly transmissable novel virus which can cause serious complications requiring hospitalisation for a certain percentage of people who catch it. We have discovered some things to increase patient survival (early increased oxygen support, early surveillance for evidence of thrombotic effects) but there is no easy treatment for this.

They increased spread within the community has necessitated measures to break potential transmission chains. Being mad at NPHET or the government won't alter that reality. The way to ensure these businesses can stay open is to adhere to social distancing guidelines and limit the number of close contacts to decrease the level of circulating covid 19 within the community. When that is achieved pubs and restaurants will be less likely to be sources of community transmission. If everyone acted responsibly we would have more freedoms.
