This seems to be the UK approach - you're not allowed to meet friends in your house, but you are allowed to meet them in the pub. Doesn't make any sense to me. I can keep far more distance between myself and a friend at home than I can in a pub (assuming I want to be able to hear them), and I can completely avoid the scores of other potentially infected people.

I realise it's good for the economy to force people to go to the pub and not allow them to stay at home, but come on...

can see the idea behind it. In your house (not saying yours now) there might not be distancing, might not be masks, hand hygiene etc.

What they see as a controlled environment has all of that in their guidelines.

Can certainly see why they'd want it instead of groups mixing in houses

Can you elaborate on what you want? :)

I want Dublin locked down to protect us down south.

Horrible numbers today yet again. Feels like a tsunami of hospital admissions on the way.

    Seriously losing this battle now.

Why ? They're opening subject to any local restrictions.

Was mentioned in todays papers that government want people if meeting socially to do so in controlled environments such as pubs and not in houses.

    They'll open
I can't wait for my cuppa tea and cake for 2 euros. I am even thinking of making it a 'spirit tea' for once. :D

You can still meet a friend or 2 in a house. My understanding is it's not so much moving gatherings to pubs but rather limiting them to half a dozen people or so in either place

Anyone get the feeling that Ireland and the Uk are trying to to get to similar restrictions and medium term plans? Has there been a lot of talking going on quietly in the background?

Some people love packed houses at Christmas, others dread the whole thing. A quieter Christmas might suit as many people as a hectic Christmas does not suit. So for one year the bijou Christmas people win! I hate that I cannot really travel abroad at Christmas this year - that has been what I like to do. Ah well. Quiet snuggly time at home sounds nice too.

Not a huge fan of Christmas, hate feeling pressured to socialise, so a quieter Christmas would suit me fine though maybe not in the shadow of COVID-19.

If cases are reaching these numbers now, they'll only go one way when we open fully. It looks like we're walking into the firing line and realistically, it's probably the only way forward. We've only been slowing the inevitable.

Not having read up on this before, it does sound very like Covid 19. It’s is notable that it appears to have had 3-4 distinct waves between starting in 1889 and dissipating to the background in 1895. Using this a evidence that c-19 is weakening may be premature

I wasn't suggesting it was. My point was while those four coronaviruses are relatively harmless now they weren't always that way.

Even if Covid follows a similiar path it's still capable of causing a large number of deaths between now and then.

Not good in the sense that we now have a backlog created of nearly 100 cases today

    Because there were 250 swabs?

    Two weeks ago it was:
    In hospital: 30
    In ICU: 5

So it's not actually that bad?

Numbers are increasing but numbers going to hospital aren't matching.

Will be interesting to see if it continues like this in the next few weeks.

Lots of people were looking forward to seeing family again by Christmas . So many haven’t seen their children who live in Europe since February . I used to see my daughter every 4-6 weeks and haven’t seen her since February . I will be gutted not to see her here at Christmas

I get it. I will still adhere to guidelines but I will not listen to the narrative that we are all likely to be hooked up to a ventilator this winter. The worst is over. For people's mental health you couldn't seriously listen to that all winter from hse nphet. Not all 5 million are at serious risk more like a few hundred like every winter.

I’m not aware of any narrative from ANY quarter that suggests that... “we are all likely to be hooked up to a ventilator this winter”... nonsense

I’ve heard plenty of narratives on the other hand, criticizing restrictions, criticizing every element of hard work and sacrifice that’s kept people well, healthy and alive, you couldn’t move for that crap. I’ve heard the almost CONSTANT disingenuous ‘my mintal health’ narrative that’s been exposed as the self centered sham that it is, used by ever greedbag going both in business and self centered ‘social’ gimps. All out in the open now, the ‘my mintal health brigade’ have been shown up for what they are, cat is out of the bag well and truly. :). They’ll hold onto a difficult legacy in many peoples eyes when this is over.

No cases in Sligo and Monaghan, I think those are the two counties.

I'm not for one moment trying to take from anyone who enjoys Christmas and looks forward to spending time with their loved ones it's just it's too much for me. I have a great relationship with my family but a quiet Christmas is my goal. I'm sorry that you're missing your daughter and hope that you will see her face to face in the not too distant future.

If that's correct and we had say 1400 cases in 2 weeks, 4 in icu, 20 in hospital

0.28% case ICU rate, 1.42% case hospital rate and lets say 50% of the ICU patients die thats a 0.14% fatality rate

    5 million people @ 0.14% IFR

About 7,000 people will die if its lets run wild with no immunity

Think we are over the worst

With a day to go 1,058 cases this week the first time since early May to have over 1,000 weekly cases.

Looks like this week we'll have our highest weekly testing figure for Monday to Sunday.

For those who think there's a conspiracy in 'holding back' positive results.

From a Public Health Department doctor who does the notifying and outbreak management.

Posted this earlier as I was thinking the same.
The World Health Organization says data to date suggests 80% of Covid-19 infections are mild or asymptomatic, 15% are severe infection, requiring oxygen and 5% are critical, requiring ventilation.
Whatever about the rest of the statement but I think we can safely say this couldn't possibly be true. Not anywhere near those numbers.

So divide the hospitalisation rate by 10 and ICU numbers by 20 with regards to the suggested WHO numbers. HSE might have to issue a statement whether those WHO numbers are still what we base our threat assessment on.
