Has anyone from NPHET explained why now would be a good time to open the ‘Damp’ Pubs. It’s very difficult to follow the logic, (if there is any). Is there any scientific basis to it or are they just following the mob like they did on masks.
I have come to the conclusion that NPHET is made up of people who have no more idea about how to deal with this virus than than any random person you might meet in a pub, (if they were open). They are like a blind man with a blunderbus firing off salvos in any random direction hoping he’ll hit something.

Tbh, I think they’ve just realized that the cases are not going to be coming down anytime soon and they can’t keep pubs shut until there’s a vaccine.

Their stats must obviously show that the pubs who were operating as restaurants the past while don’t pose a serious threat.

So they've finally concluded that "wet pubs" (vomit) are no riskier than restaurants.

Honestly, I think they've just realized that the horse has bolted and it's now counter productive keeping them closed.

People going on the piss in Belfast and Newry, house parties in holiday homes up to 100 strong and multiple establishments beginning to take liberties after months of being downtrodden with ridiculous restrictions are all far riskier than a controlled environment with table bookings.

10% report symptoms lasting more than four weeks, it’s going to kill us all

    Another stupid study.

Im sure most people can tell stories of catching the flu or a cough even a chest infection and it lasting more than 2 weeks.

I've had a cough for 6 weeks before.

    More fear and scaremongering.

Right so your blaming Leo on this one.

    Any reason why?

Or you just hate him in general so it's all his fault?

I can't imagine that this decision is coming from NPHET.

It flies in the face of their reasoning for keeping pubs shut up to this point.

The government are moving on pubs because they are feeling the heat about it from publicans and other politicians. That's basically why this is happening now: it's a political decision being led by government, not by NPHET

NPHET is never going to explicitly criticise the government in public - and vice versa. So any decision will be spun as a joint decision.

There may be an element of cynicism in this move. It might be more important to government to be seen to be willing to open pubs, even if they know full well it may not happen.

UK Government acknowledging those with long Covid. i.e this who have "recovered" but are not getting better.
Wonder will Irish Gov do the same. We should probably tell them to stop being so negative. The power of positive thought
can get us through this crisis.

10% report symptoms lasting more than four weeks, it’s going to kill us all

That's a bit rash. I wouldn't get so panicked if I were you. It's obviously very important for those affected but a 10 to 1 chance is pretty small odds although I've won larger bets. Still that's the problems with big numbers. 10% of a big number is a big number, not so easy to pooh pooh.
Around 10 per cent of mild coronovirus cases who were not admitted to hospital have reported symptoms lasting more than four weeks.
While a number of hospitalised cases reported continuing symptoms for eight weeks or more weeks following discharge.

It comes as a report suggests 60,000 people with so called 'long Covid' are suffering from symptoms of illness for more than three months.

Wouldn't be unlike picking the winner of the grand national in terms of order of magnitude. Granted it's hard to do but lots of people pick the winner of the national.

Some of the public, and it is reflected by certain users on this thread, are fed-up of the virus and restrictions and scoff and sneer at people that might worry.

The powers-that-be are listening to these imbeciles and bowing to the pressure.

Jeez. Just watching George on RTÉ news.

    The dublin stats are dreadful

There can be no way dublin pubs should open/remain open when the r number of dublin county is so high.

Why didn’t they stress that though, instead of saying they were ineffective, and completely muddying the waters? We could’ve been using scarves, bandanas, etc to cover our faces. Small industries and individual people had also started making fabric masks and they could’ve ramped up production. There was even tutorials online how how to make a face mask out of a sock!

And last weeek they were telling us keeping pubs closed and limiting contact was important for keeping schools open. Story keeps changing to suit public opinion.
This is a government which are not in control

    Agree 100 % .
Couldn't believe that they were going to open pubs , after all the restrictions announced to reduce " our national budget of contacts in order that our children could go to school " , to paraphrase Dr Phillip Nolan !
And those publicans having a demonstration today with only a few wearing masks ...how safe would their pubs be when they can't even get that one right ?

    I think it's time for a national government .

Tricky question, because I do hate him in general.

But no, I think I remember correctly and without bias that he undermined all his colleagues just a few days ago by coming out and saying words to the effect of “wet pubs should be given the chance to reopen and prove that they can operate safely".

Prior to that I think a lot of people expected them to remain shut to facilitate school/college reopening

but then again maybe I just hate him

Just listening to the news and their daily death count they tell us, so it was 1 today and 2 in the north.

People talk about the deaths and who terrible it is. Of course people dying isn't good but (and I'm not a CT or anti masker) but how many died today in Ireland from cancer, heart attacks, strokes, car accidents.......

Stats aren't good at all I'm afraid. I live in Dublin but there is an obvious problem here now and I'd be in favour of a lockdown now. We must all pull together and beat the virus off the streets once more.

Those effects take place mostly in vulnerable patients, who can, if they're able to move at all, wear surgical masks, which they can buy at pharmacies.

Economics could also be at play. If you take a conservative figure of 20,000 working in the trade but currently on the PUP scheme that's 7 million a week.
Personally no more dangerous than what's currently open once restrictions and guidelines are followed.

Heard a report today on RTE1 that lungs are healing back to normal after covid.

And there is no evidence of long term damage.

For it to return again in 2 months.

How many lockdowns do you think it will take to get rid of the virus?

Of course but the CV19 deaths would have to grow massively to get anywhere near the total of the other reasons.

    Total nonsense.
You reckon back in March if the entire country were told Face coverings were mandatory where they are now that someone would be able to magic up a few million of them on the fly? While at the same time managing to magic up the few million needed for front line staff?

They need something to blame the closing of the schools. Opening pubs and closing them would deflect nicely from the sh!tshow going on there and when the time comes they can pull the plug on both and blame the pubs as opposed to their p!ss poor planning around schools.

    Politics is lovely.
