Thanks. Emailed it in on Wednesday for the same reasons as yourself, hopefully you get sorted soon!

For anyone interested in knowing how long it takes to get a statement of account for prize bonds, received it in the post today 9 days after requesting it.

Can you remember how many draws there were? I know there were only two draws a year when it started. That might have continued until 1993. Big prizes but not many chances of winning. Bonds were a really expensive purchase back in the day.

I have W bond from 1980, so there were only about 25 million bonds issued in the first 23 years. Probably far too small a number to support weekly draws.

In the 1980s ''Prize Bond Day'' was the 1st of the month, then the weekly draw was introduced with star prize IR15,000, rising to €20,000 and now the weekly star prize is €50,000, jackpot prize rising to €1,000,000, was monthly, then 6 times a year, now down to twice yearly, June and December.

I know a guy won £100k TWICE back in the 80s. I suspect he still has most of it
Well all I can say is, he ether had a huge holding or was extremely lucky, or it's just a myth, I'm inclined to believe the latter.
Nothing for me this week, total wins this year on 60K is €50euro.

I remember nearly 10,000 €75 prizes every week as well as more big prizes. The interest rate now, even with a massive increase in the fund in recent years, cannot support that, just as the small number of bonds in the past could only support 2, then 12 draws a year. It made sense to have more of the prize fund devoted to big prizes, when the draws were so rare.

If it went back to monthly €1,000,000 prizes, one option would be to take €10m from the 50's. Last year the 50's won about €12.4 m, so that would be a massive hit. Any other enhancement of the big prizes is going to hit the 50's hard.

Guys quick question. Thinking of investing 10k in prize bonds. Am I better to do it in a lump sum and get all the numbers in a sequence or to split it up into 5x 2k ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 432 ✭✭WacoKid

You need to go into the Post Office with the forms filled out and make an initial purchase. IIRC its 4 bonds min at a cost of €25. You are then set up to buy bonds online soon after.

No difference how you break down your purchases...unless you have OCD and need the sequencing!

    Makes no odds either way.

Nothing for me. The number of €50 prizes in each of the September draws is 5,548 up from 5,479 in August. In January it was 4,998.

Three prizes in Antrim, two to the same person who could have been waiting twelve years for a prize.

Prize Value Winning Prize Bond Location

    €50 JL122183 Antrim
    €50 JL122141 Antrim
    €50 AMO522717 Antrim

€50K gone to Limerick again, from memory that is four times in the last three months or so.

Hi All - I'll be following this thread with more interest from now on as I'm about to put maybe €60-70k of my savings into PB's.

Just a quick (probably stupid) question - I'm currently filling out the form and the first section asks if I'm an existing PB holder. The answer is Yes, as I have €50 (8 bonds) in PB's that was given to me as a gift.

It then asks for my Customer Account Number - where do I find this? I've logged into my account and cant find it anywhere?

It also asks for my previous PB number - I have 8 sequential numbers from the €50 gift, is it one of these I give? If so, which one?

Apologies for the probably very basic questions.

Use any of the 8 bonds numbers. The account number is on the top right of the bonds.

I've a small amount of money set aside as an emergency fund of sorts in a savings account that is earning practically no interest. Was thinking Prize Bonds would be a better option. Would that be a wise move? I'm aware that there's a 90 day holding period at the start, but I can get by initially until that passes.

We had €50k sitting in a savings account for years, earning an average of €20 in interest a year. We transferred it to prize bonds in January 2019. We've won €50 x 8 times. A whole lot better than having it in a savings account, imo.

That return is an outlier. The current return on €50,000, on average, would yield €175pa. You have done very well. Congratulations.
