Looks like it varies a lot between banks. PTSB have a limit of €2500 it appears but BoI appear to either be €25000 or unlimited depending on varying sources! Maybe a BoI debit card will work after all - thanks for all the replies!

For the record I assisted a relative with the successful purchase of €20,000 state savings yesterday using a BOI Visa Debit Card. So that’s €50k using an Ulster Bank card and €20k (or more) using a BOI one.

On 01 August it will be three years since the notional interest rate went to 0.5%. Anyone interested could work out their return in the last three years, to see if that is long enough to iron out the "glitches". Unless someone got a big prize, average luck will make it around 0.35%.

    Pretty close.

Most of my large batches were purchased after the 1st August 2017. Taking the purchase dates into account, my winnings of €2,500 represent an annual return of .38% for the period 1/8/2017 to 31/7/2020. All prizes were €50.

This will all change of course when I pick up the €50k prize on Friday next...

Well I didn't get the €50k, but I did get €50, so something I suppose

    Winnings on 31st July €50
    Last win: 17th July €50
    Weeks since last win: 2

    2017 (Jul-Dec) - €100k – 7x€50 = €350
    2018 (Jan-Dec) - €200k – 12x€50 = €600
    2019 (Jan-Dec) - €250k – 20x€50 = €1,000
    2020 (Jan-July) - €252k - 15x€50 = €750

Improves my annual return over the three years (1/8/2017 to 31/7/2020) to .39% (actually .3881%)

A question for those who have their winnings set to automatically reinvest in more bonds - have you ever won on a PB you won?

To me, that would be a very sweet win indeed.

Thank you. Well done. I have only recently found this thread and read about 50% of it so have missed a lot.

As I said, winning on winnings is sweet. Compounds the interest so to speak.

    Once for me, so far.

I reinvested a €50 Win in October 2014, and one of the bonds issued had a €50 win on 24th April 2015. Sweet indeed.

    Comparing 2019 wins with 2020:

    Jan-July 2019: 14 x €50 wins in 7 months, 2 wins per month on average
    Jan-July 2020: 15 x €50 wins in 7 months, 2.14 wins per month on average

    Very consistent, but.....

Aug-Dec 2019: 6 wins in 5 months, 1.2 wins per month on average

    So not very consistent.

It will be interesting to see how the last 5 months of this year pan out.

Can I ask if you need to check your numbers yourself each week or do you have faith that you will be notified if one of your PB numbers is chosen? I'm a newbie at all of this. Thanks so much

Trick is to log in to the prizebond tracker on their site, simple site that doesn't email you if you win but it does save all your numbers once you insert them so will tell you when you login whether you've won anything since last time.

There is no need to check yourself, the PB office will send you notification and your new Prize Bonds.

Have held prize bonds since before Christmas last year and had my first win last Friday -€50.

Was delighted. Been checking every week since investing so was a nice surprise to finally have a win.

I had about 5k in Prizebonds at one stage but reduced back.
Eventually reduced back to one unit in 2015 after my Granny died. We discovered a prize bond from the very 1st draw. Had never won in all that time. How they suckered that generation. And mine.
I put 25k into allocated gold (bullionvault.com) in late May and have made over 2k since then on paper. Waiting for it to reverse a little and will attempt to take profits and re-invest.
Prizebonds are a bit like the lotto. One ticket is as good as 2000 as you'll make negligible impact on the odds versus the big institutions who are like syndicates hoovering up all the prizes.

I'm fairly certain that institutions arent able to own prize bonds? Even if they were, the 250k cap per person would kill that argument anyway.

Well no one is forced to invest in prize bonds everyone knows beforehand how bad the interest rate is.

Savings in Ireland is a fools game anyhow given the current rate of return and the rate of inflation.

Prize Bonds and precious metals are very different asset classes with very different investment attributes. Both can and often do form part of a balanced portfolio. They aren’t substitutes for each other.

Prize bonds are very different to the lotto. Lotto tickets are good for one draw. Your Granny’s Prize Bond participated in over 3,000 draws between 1957 and 2015. A single bond has no guarantee of winning no matter long you hold it. Had she won once she could have matched or beaten inflation and outperformed many other asset classes. And her capital remained available throughout.

On average your €5,000 holding had a probability of winning once ever 3 years at current rates. That’s an average, any one €5,000 holding can do better or worse.

    Your final point is nonsense.

Comparing gold and prize bonds is a bit bizarre. I don't think you'd be making the same point if this was a number of years back when gold was at 300 dollar levels. The downside risk of gold is incomparable to the risk of not matching inflation with prize bonds, not to mention tax implications.

Maybe not 3,000 draws. Early on there would not have been enough bonds to support weekly draws, so it started out as only two draws a year. The first regulations citing weekly draws that I can find is 1993, but it could have been earlier.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1958/si/60/made/en/print

The point still holds anyway. Those who have other asset classes such as gold, Bitcoin or shares have an interest in promoting them to keep the price up. But the small players would need to be careful because the markets are being manipulated hour to hour by the professionals. An example is the Sterling Euro rate which changes all the time with no reference to any underlying economic reasons. Prize Bonds holders don't care how many new bonds are being bought, or old ones being cashed in.
