Another €50 win for us today from the new batch

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,552 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Nothing for me today. The number of weekly €50 prizes is up from 5431 in July to 5479 in August. The 50K winner was bought in 2008.

i have recently invested 50k, this year to date up 350 quid, will be well happy if i can get up to 600 (50 pm) as u wouldnt get near this with any bank. No doubt whatsoever investments have to be big to get any kind of return, i think the max is 250K

We discovered a prize bond from the very 1st draw. Had never won in all that time.

I have a 1958 UK Premium Bond here (it started 1956) which has never won - and the address IS up to date! :)

The explanation is in the changes to the notional interest rates, if they apply to the years you mean. Up to date August 2020.

    2000 2.75%.
    2004 2.4%
    Sept 2007 3%.
    Jan 2012 2.25%
    June 2012 1.75%.
    Dec 2013 1.6%
    Nov 2014 1.25%.
    July 2016 0.85%.
    Aug 2017 0.5%.

Only 12 draws a year, you have no chance:)

That’s an exceptional return. On €50,000 the expected return of .35% would have given you just over €100 by the end of July.

Looks like your luck is in - you should consider buying a lot more.

My 1,000 MC930 bonds, a subset of a large holding, won 6 prizes between April 2019 and July 2020. I wrote about them before. If I had 4,000 bonds €25K which performed like that they would win over 20 prizes a year.

Exceptional results like that are possible because to make the average there will also be large numbers of bonds which under perform. Including millions of single bonds which never won. From memory my 10K bunch has not won for two years, and a subset of 25K has not won for three years.

Have held prize bonds since before Christmas last year and had my first win last Friday -€50.

Was delighted. Been checking every week since investing so was a nice surprise to finally have a win.

Nothing for me this week but I’m still glad I’m off the mark at least. :pac:

Each of your batches is a subset of the full set of three or four. If you look at your results, each batch might have given you different percentage returns in the last three years. It all goes to make up the average.

I should have said part of in my case instead of subset.

    Interesting thread.
So if you are going to buy a single bond or a few there's really no point as the chances of winning are so stacked against you eh?

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,552 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

As in every prize draw the odds are stacked against.

If you have the funds to spare, as an experiment put €1,000 in bonds and €1,000 in whatever you judge will bring you the biggest net profit after a year. If you are lucky you will be one of 7 people out of every 100 with holdings of €1,000 who will turn that into €1,050. That is if the prize structure stays the same.

It can be calculated exactly for 2019 from the figures in the Annual Report page 20. 0.5% of the fund is given in prizes. The prizes from €500 to €1m are a set number from the start of the year, but the number of €50 prizes changes every month.

So it is an approximate calculation during the year, but is guaranteed to be higher than 2019, if the number of €50 prizes keeps increasing. Which it has every month for years.

Long time lurker but finally have decided to join the updates as another reference point.

2011-> Aug 2020 : various amounts up to a total of about €10K (mostly in the last year or so). Single win in all that time of €50 :-(

Aug 2020 increased amount to €72K approx

    So....

    Winnings on 7th August 2020: €0
    Last win : N/A (sometime in 2012 I think!)
    Investment : €72K
    Total winnings to date: €50

Heres hoping there will be at least a few €50 prizes now and again!

€50 2 weeks ago, same again today, big drought before that though. My 100k house deposit running at about 0.15% return for the year, should have just shoved it all into Amazon during the Covid dip.
