Do you think those measures will have much impact? Seemed like a bit of window dressing really. If there is any drop you'd expect a rising trend to resume once the opening of schools has an effect.

Not sure to be honest. They seem to have had an effect in stopping exponential growth and leveling out the numbers.
The coming week will probably tell how effective after that they've been.

If 230 cases are confirmed tonight.

824 cases last 6 days from 59,283 tests

765 cases Monday to Saturday last week from 52,018 tests.

That's 59 more cases from 7,265 extra tests carried out. You can see why Dr Glynn reckons the disease is currently stable in the ROI.

Do they hold the backlog to Saturday to try make people think before partying? It just makes no sense. So many here can see the positive swabs etc, why don’t the journalists call them on this? Or do they? I don’t watch the briefings anymore.

Nah don't think anyone has called it out in any press conference to be honest.

I'd be surprised if any journalist was paying attention to the swab numbers

highest week of testing if I'm not mistaken?

If not the highest certainly up there.

Have you literally not read why the number is big today and how the cases this week at last week are very stable in terms of average per day.

Where did i say they went in with broken arms ? I've made the point previously if your getting admitted to hosptial your tested but not sure what point your trying to make here.

Yup that post and the other proves your on a wind up. Won't be engaging with you further because its utterly pointless and a waste of time

Perfectly fine by me, your opinions were extremely basic, usually a copy paste of some anti-mask Facebook group.

Can anyone explain why these backlogs happen and why not one gobshíte in the media can pick up on it and ask for an explanation

This is the latest I've read, other posters may have further updates:
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2020-08-15/coronavirus-new-strains-mutation-vaccine-headlines/12519576

There's no concrete evidence that this, or any other, mutation has changed the virulence of the virus, — that is, the severity of the disease it causes — says Edward Holmes, an evolutionary virologist at the University of Sydney.
The reason D614G has attracted more interest than many of the other mutations, which could fall anywhere among the 30,000-odd building blocks of the virus's genome, is that it's on the spike protein. This protein makes up the bumps on the virus that allow it to enter our cells, and is the target of all the vaccines currently being developed...
"However, there is some evidence the D614G mutation increases the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in a laboratory setting," he says.
"I also suspect that it gives some boost to the transmissibility of the virus in nature, although this is not completely proven yet and I doubt that any effect is substantial.
That news article was referencing this paper. It’s 36 pages long so you may not want to read something so heavy on a Saturday or ever!

    https://www.cell.com/cell/pdf/S0092-8674(20)30820-5.pdf

The UK Genetics Consortium looked at the rate of spread of both strains and showed that the G614 strain spread faster than D614 in the laboratory setting but the results had a low statistical significance. G614 has however largely replaced D614 as the dominant strain worldwide.

Relatively stable for the week, would ideally like to see that coming down next week as the full effects of the measures brought in 3 weeks should be coming through in numbers

Thousands of schools back open this week . Third level to open in late September.Cases stabilizing unlikely to happen. We are likely to follow other European countries rate of transmission especially if all pubs open soon.

Could well happen. Let's see how the week progresses.

It is encouraging to see them currently stable and not growing exponentially

There's no sugar-coating that number, it's extremely high.

Not good at all. I'm not liking the direction we are headed in.

As someone who spent 3 weeks on his back with Covid and still with breathing issues 2 months later I'd like to see people begin to take this a bit more seriously now.

It really is no joke if you get this thing bad.

Totally agree, this is a lethal and scary virus, there's little known about it but yet we have people who think they're keyboard scientists trying to tell everyone that it's fine for whatever selfish reasons they have.

You have some neck accusing the poster of basic opinions, all you seem to post is terrible numbers,500 cases a day soon, out of control, end of the world bull*hit, never ending crap with absolutely no substance what so ever.

It's utterly bizarre. My whole family tested positive as well as my mother in law and I was the only one (thankfully) who had it bad. Only my eldest had any other symptoms to speak of a temperature and loss of taste.

Funny thing is I'm only in my 40's and I was in above average condition health wise for my age.

I'm just back doing long walks now and am hoping to get back running in the next few weeks.

    CUE THE HISTRIONICS

Honestly when you pay attention to the testing data, as everyone here does, these over-inflated bull**** case load days get very, very tiresome.

Not too bad considering 1 million people have gone back to school, full impact of that won't be known until next week though.

Dangerous and lethal? How many deaths attributed to Covid in Ireland in the last week?

I wonder how long it takes for deaths to actually be reported in general, it seems like quite a long wait if the previous deaths show us anything (june etc)

India have overtaken Brazil and have the 2nd highest case numbers total in the world. Their testing per million number is very low in comparison to many others. They will overtake the United states within the next 6 weeks I reckon

    231 cases eh?
This is getting worse. The idea is to have fewer and fewer cases as time goes by not more and more.

I reckon we'll be up to a thousand per day by Christmas. (Minus any lockdown)
