My modem is arriving today. I've the main BB point in a converted attic office space, using this old powerlink set to send BB to sitting room TV (PS4 etc)

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Networks-200Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapters/dp/B008O52VN2/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_img_5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8HDAN7NEB02D3WHB0NPP

WOuld I be better off upgrading this powerlink? Any suggestions?

I have a seperate wifi router in sitting room also, but its dated. Any decent priced wifi routers I can upgrade to? I'm a little out of touch oif whats best at present.

    Thanks!

Just curious when did you put your order through? 3 weeks later and I still don't have my modem yet.

Hi, I have an outdated switch ethernet splitter in the sitting room also so that probaly needs repalcing! The switch allows for lines to run to TV, PS4, XBox, Wifi Router and wired Chromecast.

    Budget about €150 - €200?

    Thanks!

Would you consider going for a mesh system?

Your budget doesn't allow for a full utilisation of the speeds coming with your modem.

You can pick up a decent switch on Amazon for about 40 euro or less, and I would then go for a mesh system if your house is big enough to use it. Otherwise, there are some excellent routers out there for reasonable prices, such as TP Link Archer - you could get a wifi 6 router for less than 100 euro

Check with them, I ordered on the first day and no sign after a week, turned out the order is been cancelled, happened to a few others on this thread

Thanks - Does the Mesh use the electrical outlets to carry the signal? or wifi? Does this degrade the new fast speed or 650 - 800 meg?

I'm in a 3 bed semi with converted attic but thew issue is running a very strong signal - preferrably wired if possible to my devices in the sitting room 2 floor down.

    Would this suit me?

You can have both wifi and powerline if you go for the likes of the TPLink Deco P9.

However, if you want to be getting anything over 500 meg on wifi, you really should up that budget quite a bit. A few of the folks going to the 1 gig download are using netgear orbi - and that starts at about 500 euro for a router and two satellites. It uses a 5Ghz band for backhaul betweetn the router and the satellites. From all accounts, this is an excellent system.

Like I said - the likes of the Deco P9 will use both. Most mesh systems will use wifi only. The more expensive ones should do better because like I have said, they use a dedicated 5Ghz band for backhaul. This gives better speeds.

I am currently using a Deco M5 over 1700 sq ft. My 500mb connection will throw out 360mb at the router, and anything from 70mb to 200mb close enough to the satellites.

The tenda mesh system most likely wont do anything more than what I am getting on the M5.

I know you think the orbi systems are pricey, but I would rather pay extra and have excellent speeds and coverage throughout the house than skimp and suffer.

Ok many thanks! With the orbi, can I add a switch downstairs for 5 Ethernet lines to the back of downstairs entertainment setup? Will it hold the max bandwidth? How many hubs in the €500 system?

You should be able to add a switch for your entertainment setup. Not sure if it will hold the max bandwidth, but I would say that it would be giving a fairly solid 500mb + depending on whether your devices can manage those speeds or not.

The orbi for 399 sterling should give 1 router and 2 satellites.
Orbi RBK53S is in use by some of the posters here and they reckon it's as solid as they come.

Of course, you could always go for the Wifi 6 version and pay 1100 euro ;)

With the 399 version, i plug the virgin router into the main orbi router, then add the 2 satellites throughout the house? Does the satellite have Ethernet ports so I don't need the switch?

Edit.. Thanks for the replies and help today by the way!

At those prices you might be better served getting an electrician to fish some cables around the premises (helps if you have your router in the attic to start with...)

Thanks! Anyone recommend a decent electrical to get a quote? Most guys can overcharge from experience.

    Might be a good alternative!

If the signal struggles to reach the living room from the attic at the moment then one satellite may not be enough (though that Netgear system might have better range which could it make it feasible).

You might need to have a satellite on the middle floor as well, partly to act as a relay between the unit in the attic and on the ground floor.

I would also second the recommendation to run an Ethernet cable (either fished through the internal walls or an external run might also work i.e. pop out from the attic, run externally to outside of living room and pop back in).

You could also combine wired with a Mesh system (now or when budget allows) for hopefully seamless Wifi roaming handoff between attic and living room WiFi units.

Quick one for those with new virgin 1 gig router... the existing hard line from the virgin wall point... do I need to replace this into the new modem or can I use existing line? I have mine buried behind a lot of furniture!

Get a good Mesh system. You will never regret it.

That seems like a pretty absolute blanket statement for a technology that's fraught with caveats.

That being said, when the thread starts with the below comment with 13 thanks, you know things will go downhill fast.

I love all the posts from people who have no idea about how internet works, 1GB is absolutely great for most people, good luck streaming 4K easily with a 100Mb connection.

The 1 gig package is a waste of money. Unless you have a niche reason for it, Virgins lowest package at 250 is more then adequate for any household. If you need upload, the 500 package has the same cost with the same upload. And I mean a good reason to need the upload. Your 2mb office document is going to take a split second to upload on the 250 package. Your avarage game a fraction of a percentage of whats there. Same with streaming, VOIP etc.

And wasting money on making sure you "get" the 1gig over wifi is a even bigger waste of money. Your just chasing higher numbers for no real reason.

Agree with this... i get about max 360mb over wifi with 4 google wifi units in th house... its fast enough... i could do with 250mb but got the 500 as there wasnt much difference in price... on video pretty much all day with work so figured it do no harm along with the stream others in the house use.. 1gb at the price makes no sense... give it for free to 500mb subscribers

That's why they said a "good" mesh system. Plenty of folks buy a low cost system expecting it to be amazing. You get what you pay for.
That being said, when the thread starts with the below comment with 13 thanks, you know things will go downhill fast.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that quote. For most people who live in the real world of a family all scrambling for internet connection with multiple devices - 4k streaming, online gaming, huge downloads and uploads - a 1 Gb download is well worth it.

Again, a poor grasp of reality of what goes on in irish households. For the household with multiple connected devices, a 250 mb package will not cut it. As if all folks ever upload is a 2mb office document
There are plenty of folks out there who upload considerably bigger files than that, and on multiple occasions throughout the day. I am one of those folks. My average document upload is approx 2 gb, and I would upload between 8 to 10 of these every week.
And wasting money on making sure you "get" the 1gig over wifi is a even bigger waste of money. Your just chasing higher numbers for no real reason.
What's even worse is assuming you know everyone's needs.

Perhaps you would feel more at home on After Hours

Been onto technical support for over an hour and I’m getting the usual excuses such as number of devices connected etc, just got. 68.8 download on wired connection ! And many dropped connections to the internet itself. WiFi signal can be full strength but no internet !

And they tell me that 300 down is very fast on a wired connection ... did I miss something somewhere , thought i signed up for 1gb so I’d expect at least 8-900 on wired, only other thing on wired connection is the sky box
