Except you can have very low oxygen and not know about it. It's called happy hypoxia. Why would someone get tested if they don't know there's something wrong.

This is the problem. Are they monitoring positive asymptomatics or just throwing out the word asymptomatic?

You'll know if your low in oxygen, your worried about nothing.

School near me closed today because of an outbreak:-

    https://www.limerickleader.ie/news/home/570927/breaking-a-school-near-the-limerick-border-closes-due-to-covid.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

A NATIONAL school located close to the Limerick county bounds has closed "immediately" as a number of staff members are close contacts of a case of Covid-19, the Leader has learned.

A text from the school to parents this Wednesday - seen by the Limerick Leader - reads: "We have been advised by the HSE that a number of staff members have been identified as close contacts of a case of Covid-19."

It goes on to say that, "On that basis they have to be excluded from school. It is not possible for the school to remain open without any permanent member of staff so unfortunately the school will have to close immediately".

The school hopes to reopen next week.

Separately, a number of pupils have been sent home from a primary school in west Dublin following a positive case of Covid-19 this Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a primary school in southwest Dublin sent a classroom of pupils home for two weeks on Tuesday following a confirmed case.

Can you really call it an outbreak if not one staff member of the school has tested positive?

Am I correct that the reported death did not occur recently?

What do you mean by monitoring? Even mild symptomatic cases aren't actively monitored as such: Stay at home, take paracetamol etc.

There was also a death denotified as well.
Not sure what is the point in even announcing it given that's a net of zero deaths anywa.

    Not with this virus https://science.sciencemag.org/content/368/6490/455

So it's so easy to throw out the word asymptomatic if positive asymptomatics are not being monitored. Pretty sure, not everyone would have a pulse oximeter and monitor their own oxygen levels at home.

The BCG thing is fascinating. Portugal have numbers similar to us. both countries bcg common.
spain no, much much higher rates and now much bigger spike. hmmm.

Asymptomatic seems to be an easy word to throw out. But how exactly do they know people are truly asymptomatic and have no symptoms?

Happy hypoxia and low oxygen can happen with this. So of course someone will think they have no symptoms.

Ok your really not getting this, if you have symptoms like low oxygen you are symptomatic.
If you have no symptoms your asymptomatic.

Asymptomatic is a real word it means No symptoms, mild symptoms would be symptomatic.

Again like the other poster why are you trying to confuse things, I've a fair idea why seen as the pair of ye are at it.

Why don’t we look within Ireland on that point? Cork did not have the BCG vaccine from 1972 for 36 years. But perhaps less relevant as those who did not get the vaccine are under 50x

You don't seem capable of understanding the difference between asymptomatic and presymptomatic.
The reason why this is important is that there is abundant evidence that presymptomatic are highly contagious in the phase before they develop symptoms.
You are trying to simplify a situation so that you can comprehend it when it is more complex than that i.e.
The difference between asymptomatic and presymptomatic
AND how do you know if someone is asymptomatic if you haven't actually checked them for possible symptoms.

I'm not trying to confuse things. You are symptomatic if you have low oxygen. But if people aren't being monitored, this is the problem. They don't know if they have low oxygen. So are these cases being labelled asymptomatic.

I didn't say any of those things nor did I challenge what the Doctor said, nor did I in fact come to any conclusions.
I challenged the unwarranted conclusion you drew from that statement.

I merely asked the question when following up on close contact, how you distinguish between asymptomatic versus presymptomatic, without the benefit of hindsight \ further elapsed time.

If you can point me to a test that shows someone within 14 days exposure is guaranteed to be asymptomatic, and not contaguious VERSUS presymptomatic i.e. contagious and go on to develop symptoms, I withdraw my remark.

    i wouldnt do that.

Actually the point that these posters are making about those cases in Kildare being asymptomatic is entirely irrelevant , as shown by the spread in that county that took longer to contain .
Asymptomatic spread just as much , and at least if someone is presymptomatic , they will hopefully restrict their movements and contacts or self isolate once they start to show symptoms or be forced to do so .

I already provided a link. You clearly didn't read it.

"Among the many surprises of the new coronavirus is one that seems to defy basic biology: infected patients with extraordinarily low blood-oxygen levels, or hypoxia, scrolling on their phones, chatting with doctors, and generally describing themselves as comfortable. Clinicians call them happy hypoxics."

Will you stop trying to confuse things, I did not hear the Dr say we are really concerned that the very high number or asymptomatic people is a problem. Your making into a problem to suit an agenda the same as away with the fairies.
Again the back to BCG, it may explain the high number of asymptomatic, and the high number with mild symptoms and also the death rates in the 71+

    They know now.

Yet there is still 100s of thousands out of work over this virus that killed 4 people in August.

Where are you going with this, I'm not getting the motivation, close contacts have been traced the vast majority were asymptomatic, there is no secondary tracing happening to their close contacts. Asymptomatic don't seem to be spreading a lethal dose of the virus.
I can see how you have concerns, I'm not seeing evidence to back them up though.
Back to the BCG, the evidence is starting to point to people who've had it are asymptomatic or get a mild dose of it. We've nearly all had the injection.

I hope you had your tongue firmly in your cheek when you wrote this DM!

I am not seeing any evidence to back this up???
